"The breakdown of relationships, death of emotions, and the
dehumanization of human life in the near future form the central
theme of the film. The Pacific ocean has dried up (the catastrophe is
never explained), and California has become a desert. Wes (Viggo
Mortensen) and Karen (Jennifer Rubin), a young couple, try to make
the best of it, but life is hard on them. The only person who enjoys
himself is Harry, the tax collector (Jack Kehoe)."
A beautifully photographed but very surreal film. The action takes
place in the desert, in a furnished patch of sand – as though the
walls, ceiling, and floor of a dwelling had vanished, leaving just
the household furniture neatly set upon the sand. Characters come and
go (Rita's character comes trudging across the sand to visit daughter
Karen), engage in small talk, ending with a modern-day crucifixion
scene.
Shot entirely among the sand dunes of Slowinski National Park near
Leba, Poland, in 17 days. The film's dialogue is in English.
