Yep, I have a copy of the 1976 TV movie "Green Eyes" -- not to be
confused with "Girl With Green Eyes"!
Rita's role is that of a woman who operates in orphanage in Vietnam.
Paul Winfield plays a former GI who returns to Vietnam in an effort
to find his half-Vietnamese, green-eyed baby, whom he has never seen.
The filmmakers wanted to show the sad plight of half-Vietnamese
orphans -- children who were fathered by American servicemen. They
filmed in the Philippines, which looked very much like Vietnam.
I recently asked Rita about this movie, and she said, "The
Philippines was a very interesting place to visit, it was at the time
when Mr. Marcos was in power so you were aware of huge police
presence -- and Mrs. Marcos' shoes!! It was not the easiest place to
shoot in, very humid."
I have always wondered how Rita got this role. I mean, WHY would the
filmmakers cast a British actress in a film about American GI's in
Vietnam? Mind you, I'm very pleased that Rita got the part, but
you've got to admit that she's not an obvious choice for the role.
Cheers,
Robert
