OSCARS
Well its Oscar time. Heres my tips:
Russ’s ego needs a pop so he won’t win best actor again, Will Smith is
still just a young buck and wont get it but Denzel will win even though
he wasn’t amazing in Training day – Don’t belive for one second that the
winner of Best Actor oscar is the best actor of the year – however
winner’s write history and the USA is KING.
Moulin Rouge will pick up art department type awards and music but wont
get the big awards like best pic.
The Acadmey will reckon that the ol happy days boy `ron howard’ has
done his time and deserves an oscar as either best film or best director
– he and BM, are very overrated though!
Lord Of The Rings – great adaption of the book, made a bucketload, 2
more to come and studios love offshore production so it will pick up
several biggies – probably best film so Ron can have best director.
Lantana won’t get best foreign film but good luck to it
It really doesn’t matter who wins but its America’s `Royalty Day’ and
winners will earn more money. Good for America’s post sep 11 depression.

HARVEY’S HOUSE
Harvey's House is a precis of the TV and pay-TV columns, published each
week by the industry insider's newsletter MEDIAWEEK (described by The
Australian as 'the industry
Bible'). It is read by media and TV executives, and a very large number
of agencies, production houses and subscribers of all types. Harvey
Shore, a multi-Logie winning
writer/producer, writes the TV and pay-TV columns, and is always keen to
hear production news and opinions from Filmnet readers. If you'd like
your industry news
in Mediaweek, or if you're interested in a Mediaweek subscription,
contact Harvey by email:
onero@...
- Sportsworld is not dead.
- Peter Hiscock, executive producer of Foreign Correspondent, told me
his gun reporter Evan Williams has just filed another of his legendary
‘death or
glory ’ scoops.
-Bruce McAvaney will host a new 150-minute mega-show, Sportswatch.
- Andrew Brooke, ceo at Grundys, told me, "We‘re now very close to
finishing the re-design of Sale of the Century. We’ve chosen a
short-list of male and
female hosts, which Nine is now looking at, and we’ve added new elements
to the game-play while maintaining the character of the show. <GM: About
time they had a female host but I’d rather see a female host on Wheel of
fortyune and a bimbo male turning the letters for a change!>
- The Weakest Link has not been cancelled.
- Marina Manzoufis, head of ABC TV programming, is keen to buy The
Trench, a new four-part BBC series in which 24 men from Hull in North
England
relive the reality of day-to-day life in a First World War trench.
- Tim Brooke-Hunt, formerly an executive producer at Yorum Gross Film
Studios, will unveil a new corporate identity for his own children’s
animation company Pacific Vision, at a media function in Sydney on March
28. At the function, Tim intends revealing a range of new affiliations
and future productions for Pacific Vision. One will be the start of work
on Yakkity Yak, a new animated children’s series that has already been
pre-sold to Nickelodeon/MTV Networks. Following the launch,Tim plans to
join other Australians flying off for the annual MIP showcase.
- WIN Television turned 40 this week amid a flurry of executive changes.
Hot on the heels of John Rushton’s resignation and David Sturgiss’
appointment as managing director (with Peter Gough as the new coo),
Bruce Gordon, executive chairman of WIN Corporation announced the
following promotions and new appointments:
George Papadopoulos - Associate Director; Glen Peary - Network IT
Director; Sean Ryan - Network Sales Director (Local); Chris Goodwin -
Network
Financial Controller; Paula Abbott - Network Traffic Director; Trevor
Clarke - Network Program Director; Vicki Tiegs - Network Publicity
Director; Valerie
Wells - Network Travel Director. Gordon also announced Michael Posetti,
WIN's NSW general manager will also take on a key role in the
development of
the new network operations centre in Wollongong.
- Nine are a little disappointed that this year’s 74th Annual Academy
Awards, for which 13 Australians have been nominated, will be telecast
out of ratings. Traditionally the Academy Awards night draws a huge
audience, usually delivering enough viewers to give Nine the week. But
this year, the Oscars will be shown here on March 25, during the
two-week Easter ratings break.
- Ben Dark (Getaway reporter) has completed a new one-hour special for
Nine called Aussies – Who Gives A XXXX?
- Tim Clucas, Ten’s head of factual programming, told me, "We’re
launching Big Brother, series two, on April 7, with a one-hour special
profiling the
casting process for potential housemates and the finalists. Then, on
Monday, we’ll kick off the new series with a 90-minute live telecast
from Dreamworld, starting at 7pm, as the new housemates are locked in.
That’s Big Brother Day, and I can’t say its going to be games and fun
for everyone. For those who work on the show, Bib Brother can be a very
demanding mistress. It tends to chew up and spit out its suitors. But we
expect it will rate like crazy, and if that happens you can expect a
third series before long." <GM: Sumone should get Fiona parker a spot on
the show!>
MORE HARVEY
Allan Fels at the ACCC will commence informal meetings with interested
pay-TV parties next week, ahead of formal submissions on the proposed
Foxtel-Optus content merger. Both Foxtel and Optus are pushing for an
ACCC decision by May, so their new-model Australian pay-TV landscape can
be launched on November 1. The model is being opposed by Seven, and now
by Ten which has just thrown its hat in the rings.
<GM: New Foxtel CEO Kim Williams (whose side is he on thesedays?) wants
the Australian drama production quota dropped. Even if the proposal
doesn’t get through his anti Australian production industry stance is a
terrible sign for the Australian industry especially with Foxtel
probably set to be a monopolist in the Oz Pay TV market – perhaps the
AFC, SPAA, AWG, ASDA should quickly get their act together and petition
Alan Fels not to allow the Foxtel-optus deal to go through? Better hurry
Kim (Dalton) and crew!!!!!!!!!>
INQUIRY INTO WIRELESS BROADBAND TECHNOLOGIES
“The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts,
Senator Richard Alston, today announced that the Federal Government will
establish a House of Representatives Inquiry into wireless broadband
technologies.” Another wasteof taxpayer money. More government employees
running around writing a report that will please their Federal masters.
I have a feeling that if it was a senate enquiry that the findings would
be rather different!
http://www.dcita.gov.au/cgi-bin/graphics.pl?path=6276
GOING BACKWARDS NOT MODERNISING
Alston’s PR office say “ The Coalition Government today introduced
legislation in accordance with its election commitment to modernise
Australia's media ownership laws.
http://www.dcita.gov.au/cgi-bin/graphics.pl?path=6273 “ Of course the
whole exercise is not to medernise Australia’s media laws but just to
give the media moguls EVEN MORE POWER and hence fulfil the coalition’s
promise to the media moguls! Democracy in Oz is becoming a bit of a joke
these days (Governor General affair, Hefferman affair, Baby overboard)
and its little wonder that the populace don’t believe a word the liars
say thesedays!
You’ve gotta laugh at the proposal to split editorial departments to
ensure editorial integrity. It won’t work at all and shows a convenient
naivity in the Governm, ent’s understanding of how companies like
newscorp work. Murdoch doesn’t give the ok to every story like some old
school Beverbrook mogul, he appoints people who will perform his wishes
and if they don’t he sacks them. This culture of intimidation is how
modern moguls work and employees at these organization know it all too
well. Funny how we never saw an article in the Austrlalian saying
`Australia’s media laws don’t need reforming!’ It’s another con job.
Lets hope labor and the democrats hold true to their course of opposing
this degenerative legislation. After caving in on the GST and being seen
as the `easy lay of Australian politics’ it will be interesting to see
if Natasha does indeed see through her promise to oppose the
legislation. Crean’s labor party may even cave in too and `do a deal’.
NOYCE FEELS THE PRESSURE
At the enhance TV launch in Melbourne last Thursday Phil recounted how
he was stunned by the voracious attacks by Andrew Bolt and Des Moore in
Murdoch’s newspapers. Apparenty 1000 screenings for schools of his film
Rabbit Proof Fence had been set up but many schools cancelled their
viewings after the attacks on the film hit newsstands ( no doubt many
teachers submitted to pressure from pupils and weak willed headmasters –
be interesting to see a list of which schools did this – Melbourne
Grammar?) Still its an example of just how powerful the medi giants
already are. Still I’m sure Phil knew full well that by making a film on
such a hot political issue that he was bound to cop some flak Good on
him for tackling the subject anyway. He could easily have made an easy
10-20 million bucks directing another Angelina Jolie movie in all the
time he spent here!
ENHANCING TV
Websites come and go but the enhance TV site does actually look as
though it is useful and has a future. The royalty fee collection agency
Screenrights (Virginia, Simon & crew) have basically expanded their
activities to not only collect royalties but also tell artists where and
when their programs are being broadcast anywhere in the world. The
education component is also very significant as the site is designed to
be a nexus between teachers and the filmmaking community so that study
materials, stills, interviews, press clippings (positive and negative)
etc can be made available. Many industry bodies have got behind the site
and I’m sure distributors will come on board too eventually. Plenty of
potential. If the AFI had been on the ball they should have put this
kind of site together years ago.

AUSTRALIANS CELEBRATE RECORD NUMBER OF ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEES AT
EXCLUSIVE PARTY
Los Angeles Australian Film and Television Association (LAAFTA) and
Australian Consulate host private party in Beverly Hills
(Los Angeles) March 22nd – It was an unforgettable night, as Australians
celebrated their outstanding contribution to Hollywood, and honored
this years 11 Australian Oscar nominations. The Los Angeles Australian
Film and Television Association (LAAFTA) and the Australian Consulate in
Los Angeles hosted an exclusive pre-Oscar party lauding all nominees on
Thursday March 21st at the official consular residence in Beverly Hills.
The exclusive, high profile event honored nominees Jill Bilcock (editor
Moulin Rouge), Martin Brown (producer Moulin Rouge), Gethin Creagh,
(sound Lord Of The Rings), Russell Crowe (Best Actor Beautiful Mind),
Nicole Kidman (Best Actress Moulin Rouge), Andrew Lesnie (cinematography
Lord Of the Rings), Baz Lurhmann (producer Moulin Rouge), Catherine
Martin (Art Direction and Costume Design Moulin Rouge) and Don McAlpine
(cinematography Moulin Rouge), Roger Savage, Guntis Sics (sound Moulin
Rouge) and Angus Strathie (costume design Moulin Rouge).
“It has been such an incredible year for Australian filmmakers,” said
David Pratt LAAFTA co-founder and president and AUSFILM Commissioner in
his speech. “To quote our very own Dame Edna in this April’s Vanity Fair
“Scientific tests have determined that Australians are genetically more
talented than anyone else in the world…paleontologists at the University
of Tasmania have recently determined that Australia and Puerto Rico were
attached to each other in the Jurassic period. That makes Jennifer Lopez
an Australian!”
Australian nominees in attendance were Nicole Kidman, Baz Lurhmann, Jill
Bilcock, Martin Brown, Roger Savage and Guntis Sics. The evening’s tone
was relaxed, fun and typically joyous. It was a wonderful opportunity
for many of Tinseltown and Australia’s favorite icons to share in the
tremendous glow the continent Down Under has been basking in lately.
When asked what distinguishes Australians from other nationalities
Nicole Kidman remarked, “A sense of humor.” Sadly Russell Crowe had just
returned from Japan for the Oscars and could not be there. Other
Australian notables unable to attend were Hugh Jackman, Anthony
LaPaglia, Carrie Anne Moss and Kylie Minogue who all sent their best
wishes to the nominees.
The cocktail party was held at the Australian Consulate residence in
Beverly Hills with a star-studded guest list of Australians and
supporters who came out to celebrate this year’s dominance of the Oscars
by Australians.
In addition to many of the nominees, the guest list included Kate
Cebrano (Australian singer), Kimberley Davies (South Pacific), Alberta
Ferretti (designer), Sascha Horler (Changi), Barry Humphries (Dame
Edna), Malcolm Kennard (Amy), Paris Jefferson, (The Diamond of Jeru),
Bai Ling (Anna & The King), Ben Mendlesohn (Vertical Limit), Julian
McMahon (Charmed and Profiler), Midnight Oil, (Australian Band), Jane
Seymour (Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman), Kym Wilson (Brides of Christ), and
Sarah Wynter (6th Day).
Other Antipodean Academy Award nominees who came to the glamorous fete
were Barrie M. Osborne (producer Lord Of The Rings), and honorary Aussie
Fred Baron (producer Moulin Rouge). “We are proud of all our Australian
nominees and congratulate them for their distinguished achievements,”
said John Price, Senior Trade Commissioner and Deputy Consul General.
“Australians have a reputation for exemplifying the best in creative
filmmaking,” Price continued. “Tonight, as we honor our nominees, we
also applaud our entire film community both here and in Australian for
their outstanding contribution the entertainment industry.”
Industry heavyweights seen enjoying themselves included Icon Productions
prez and Mel Gibson’s partner Bruce Davey, Fox’s President of Intl
Distribution Scott Neeson, producers Michael Gallant and Phyliss
Carlyle, Richard Francis Bruce (famous aussie editor), Paul Steinke,
Head of Production Finance at Walt Disney Pictures, Diane Gutterud,
Head of Physical production at Disney Channel and Robert Florio,
Producer.
Hot Hollywood DJ Zak spun the latest tunes throughout the party. A
highlight of the soiree was a knockout performance by female
impersonator Miss Idaho, who ‘sang’ two numbers “Diamonds are a Girls
Best Friend” and “Lady Marmalade” to a cheering audience. VB (Victorian
Bitter), the amber brew preferred by many Australians but only
attainable in the US through the Australian consulate, was the beer of
choice, and guests indulged at the Red Bull Vodka Bar. Los Angeles’ cult
coffee favorite, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, which opens in Melbourne,
Australia in May, proudly sponsored the event.
Gift bags worth hundreds of dollars were given to all LAAFTA members.
Products included Vegemite, Minties, Movieline, Details and W Magazines,
Beautiful Mind and Lord of the Rings soundtracks, The Coffee Bean & Tea
Leaf® coffee, Jurlique, Fudge and Bloom beauty products, Trapp Candles,
and Aboriginal designed Boomerangs.
LAAFTA, the host of this party, is a non-profit, entertainment industry
organization that celebrates the work of Australian film and television
makers while providing a Los Angeles-based forum for Australian
professionals working in the film and television industries. Founding
sponsors include Twentieth Century Fox and Austrade. For information

Little understood role & future of Film and Television Schools becomes
clearer
"The world was once a stage - now it is a screen." Associate Professor
Jenny Sabine, Head, VCA School of Film and Television
A global Congress set to commence at Melbourne's internationally
celebrated Victorian College of the Arts School of Film and Television
in April will explore the future - of Film and television education in
more than fifty countries.
From 6 - 12 April the Victorian College of the Arts , School of Film and
Television will host the CILECT Congress 2002. The Congress will bring
delegates from around the world to Melbourne to explore the future of
Film and Television education. Founded in Cannes in 1955, CILECT is the
Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinema et de Television,
and has 100 member institutions in more than 50 countries on 5
continents.
The CILECT Congress 2002 at the VCA will explore critical contemporary
developments in how educators train and prepare creative future leaders
in these - indisputably - the most powerful and pervasive
communications mediums and the increasingly economically significant
industries that support them.
The CILECT Congress 2002 is designed to challenge the educators of the
film makers of the future. It's goals are to provide a means for the
exchange of ideas among the member schools and to stimulate discussion
and interchange regarding the educational future of creative personnel
in the film, television and related media industries.
This is the first time the CILECT Congress has been held in Melbourne
and only the second time it has been held in Australia (CILECT was
previously held in Sydney in 1982). The most recent Congress was
convened during 2000 in Ebetoft, Denmark and attracted participants from
across the Globe.
The CILECT Congress in Melbourne will attract - key personnel from the
major film and television schools of the world together with guest
speakers and industry representatives.
The Congress key note speaker is Academy Award Nominee (for The Lord of
the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) Australian Cinematographer -
Andrew Lesnie.
Plenary sessions, workshops, technical and product demonstrations,
debates and regional forums will be offered during the congress.
The four themes to be explored by the conference are:
Documentary in the Teaching of Fiction. Triangle (the Creative
Triangle of writer, director and producer). School and Student - the
conflict between harmony and invention. Curriculum Change and
Technological Evolution.
<GM: The creative triangle! Don’t fotget the actors, dop, sound , music,
editor etc – Bermuda triangle maybe!>

BECKER DEBATE
Gawain,
I would like to express how apalled I am at your publication of the
letter by Filminsider007. The substance of the letter furthers no
industry debate or discussion. Your decision to publish the letter is a
disgraceful
reflection on you and what you want Filmnet to be. Yours sincerely

-----------
Hi Gawain,
A colleague forwarded me your latest newsletter which included an
hilarious letter, regarding Beckers staff past and present, from the
anonymous 'Filminsider007@...
Can't disagree with much in the letter except to point out that I wasn't
'sacked' by Richard Becker. I gave three months notice and worked right
up until the day nominated. I figured that if it wasn't fun anymore I
shouldn't be doing it. And fun it certainly wasn't.
Beckers is very lucky to have inherited some terrific staff when they
acquired the Dendy organisation, including Troy Lum (Distribution) and
Sandy Don (Marketing). I am very proud of the job they have done since
being given some authority when the ......... and ........... Jane
Alsobrook was finally let go, after initially being given my job as
Headof Dendy Films and lasting six months before the staff all
threatened to ............

Dear Gawain
re the extraordinary rant re Becker from "filminsider007" ; maybe
he/she needs a geography lesson? Last time i checked, Byron Bay was
nowhere near Melbourne.

Gawain,
The anonymous letter 'Becker Vs Becker' re-affirms Filmnet's position as
the worst kind of online gossip tabloid. Your ongoing editorial decision
to give public platform to those hiding behind anonymity continues to
empower the gutless, bitter and ill-informed. I'm unsubscribing - before
somebody takes a cheap shot at me. - Andrew Mackie

Dear Gawain,
Loved the Iconoclast trailer. It should be re-named "Something about my
Spelling" and that isn't Aaron. Best laugh we have had since they last
published their crew list needs, where the foley artist
was the person who looked after the plants. Was that foley or foliage or
are they French. Seems like the Todds just can't spell, or possibly
could not find the "i" on the keyboard. To see what we
mean try reading the homepage. DL

Return to Neverland Rating***
Peter Pan returns to a ravaged England during the second world war.
Wendy is now grown up & married & has a family: a daughter Jane, who's
about the same age as Wendy was in the original Peter Pan, & a baby son
Danny. Wendy's husbandhas to go off & fight in the war & so in this
situation daughter Jane has taken it upon herself to be as mature &
responible as possible. The complete antithesis of our Peter Pan.
However the dastardly Captn. Hook enters the scene & kidnaps Jane &
takes her to Neverland. Thus the story now begins: with Peter Pan & his
comical gang & Captn. Hook & his gang, plus a very threatening
sea-monster.
Despite Peter Pan having a thick California-sounding accent Disney does
a good job in 'sequelizing' J.M. Barrie's immortal Peter Pan story. Only
a few annoying songs enter the fray & the old-fashioned animation (done
in Australia & Canada) is quite good. Also its brevity is a breath of
fresh air in the current climate of 2hour plus movies. The kiddies
seemed to like it, which is even better. Not Bad. Nick Black
