I had a wonderful time, that is one great entertainment,

but I guess you have to be familiar with ABBA 's work to enjoy it!

The songs are the true star here, it's basically some ABBA songs, and the story was written about and around these songs, which kind of reminded me of singin' in the rain!!!

Watching the movie, I was waiting for Waterloo to come along any minute, ( being a Eurovision song contest fan, you know, Waterloo was the Swedish entry , and won the contest  in 1974) but all I got was a background instrumental version of it at the fist 20 minutes  of the movie, and I had to wait until the very very very end of the movie to have Waterloo,!! This song just HAS to be there !

Streep was fantastic, she can really do ANYTHING, even a musical!!

she made me laugh, and she filled my eyes with tears in " slipping through my fingers" number.

I don't know the stage show, now after seeing the movie, I can't get how it's been done with out the great cinematography and the amazing Greek landscapes !! which made the movie  not only a feast for the ears , but also for the eyes.

It's highly recommended ( of course If you're an ABBA fan)

Salam

Ghadeer

PS. I posted this message to the movie and ESC groups, I guess this thing doesn't happen much, or ever!!!! and I love it, I hope that the next time I'll do this will be when I see a movie about the ESC or about someone who participated in the contest more than once, maybe my beloved Gary Lux!!

Very typical romantic comedy , with very typical ending!!

No , wait,  not entirely typical, for the transportation used in the last chaseis not a car, a bus, or a train, it's a horse, yes, very original!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry , I don't want to sound so sarcastic, but I was really excepting more of this one, I was hugely disappointed!

I have one question to the Scottish members, maybe  Scott Ramsey from filmemporium can help! . Were the things mentioned in the movie about Scottish traditions all true!! ?

I guess studios should stop making those kind of Romantic comedies, unless they have something really new and original!! And when I say original, I don't mean  changing locations, Chasing means, or cast!!!!

I was so lucky lately, I managed to watch 2 versions of Wuthering heights in less than a month, when I was so eager to watch ANY version of this great Novel,.

 I've posted about the first version I watched , the 1992 version , which I loved ,

The next one I watched is the UK TV version of 1998, and that one is EXCELLENT, it's better than the 1992 version,. There are many details that were  missing in the 1992 movie, and  were beautifully mentioned  in the 1998 one, I guess this version was more true to the book,.

And the cast was fantastic, !

Great Wuthering height version, I wonder if there's a better one,!!

I seriously doubt that.

It's a disappointment,
To be frank, I didn't think that Anne Hathaway can be a good Jane Austen,
But then again I thought that maybe she can, after all I never thought that
Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche can be good Wuthering Heights Heathcliff and
Catharine and they turned out great , but in Anne Hathaway case, there were no
surprises, she was as expected, a bad Jane !
Actually, the movie as a whole lacks the depth of the writers story, it says on
the surface, it's like it tells the story of an ordinary girl who lived in
certain age in England, it's NOT telling a story about a certain lady who
became one of the most important female writers! The screenplay lacks a lot, and
the directing didn't help much.
The only good thing about the movie is , and I dare say, the wonderful James
McAvoy, this guy has the ability to add freshness and goodness to the movies
he's in,
Especially to this one, which would have nothing to brag about if it didn't
have McAvoy ( I sound like I have a crush on the guy, Ha)!!!
One thing for sure, Jane Austen deserves a much better movie, !
Maybe one day she can get that!

I FINALLY watched a work based on Emily Brontë's wonderful Novel, Wuthering
heights. I watched the 1992 movie, Starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche,
when I saw the DVD, I was so happy to find it, but I have to admit that when I
knew the stars I was a little disappointed I mean, Fiennes is not exactly my
cup of tea, and Binoche is not even English, so how could these 2 possibly be
any good!!!!
I've never been happier to be wrong, they were just fantastic especially
Fiennes ! he is the perfect Heathcliff, I don't know if there were any other
good Heathcliffs, I guess maybe the BBC version is very good with wonderful
casts, like All the BBC "productions of works based on Novels" I saw, but I
don't know the BBC production of Wuthering heights, ! I only know the Fiennes's
version, I love it, and I love his role in it.
I have one reservation though, the baste of the movie was too fast, so many
things happened in a very short time, and so many details which I love in the
novel , loved to see in the movie , but they weren't there, the movie is 105
minutes, !! why not made it a little longer, the novel certainly deserves to be
focused on more, !

This version ,lucky me, tells the complete story , but I know that there are
some movie versions of this novel , like the Olivier's version, which ends when
Catharine dies!! I don't think that's fair to the novel, where's the beauty of
taking half a story and making a movie of it, , while the real depth and
fascination of the novel is the WHOLE story, !! I personally, love the part
after Cathy's death more than the part before, Wuthering heights is not
Wuthering heights without Hareton ,Catharine the Daughter and Heathcliff's
revenge and death!
By the way, Jason Riddington, who played Hareton , was perfect.

I've always loved Wuthering Heights, more than Jane Eyre, ( I compare the 2
because the writers are sisters!!) but it seems that Jane Eyre has been made
into more versions than Wuthering heights, maybe because the Jane Eyre novel is
more cheerful ,at least at the end, and it seems that it's easier to convert it
into cinema or television, while Wuthering heights' screenplay is certainly not
easy to write, ! the novel is gloomy, and creates contradicting feelings
towards Heathcliff's, you can't just like or hate the guy, you maybe like him
but hate his actions!! There's no clear feelings about him, and the movie
captured this aspect,. Good job.

I hope that I'll have the chance to watch more versions of this novel.

Ghadeer

When it finished, I was left in a big dilemma , I didn't get it.!

The technicality of making this thriller is wonderful, great directing, the whole atmosphere is so thrilling and tense, but I didn't get it!

I have to say that I'm not a fan of these kinds of movies, and this movie in particular was sometimes boring and had long scenes , but it was meant to be a thriller and it was , big time.

After it ended , I couldn't help but think about it, trying hard to connect things together, to understand, and I didn't get.

Until finally I got a break through, and I had a sudden in lighting,

Here comes the spoiler:

The only thing I could come up with, is that the whole idea of the movie , the key to everything, and the bottom line lies in the visit of the theatre near the end of the movie, when the 2 main characters go to Silencio! When the performer on stage kept saying that it's all on tape!! The players are not plying the instruments live, it's all on tape ! and when the lady starts to sing, we think that she's really singing, and we , and the characters, get emotional and react deeply to her singing,   it turns out to be that even the singing is on tape! And that what the movie is about, what we saw before this theatre scene was not real, it was on tape, and what will happen next is what actually happened,! What we saw is not real. Just like the lady who sings, what is real is what will happen next!!

Am I off beat here?

This was the only explanation I could come up with, am I missing anything!

Or maybe the movie is not supposed to be understood ,?!

This movie reminded me of Donnie Darko and Space odyssey!!!!

Donnie Darko is the best of them

A great disappointment, lots of visual effects, with no plot what so ever, and with very bad performances, especially by Hayden Christensen who proved that he can't act.!

Good movie, it’s always wonderful to watch  a French one, you see I don’t do that a lot,!! And I admit , if it wasn’t nominated for Oscars, Maybe I wouldn’t have watched it,!!
One thing for sure,  Marion Cotillard was Fantastic, especially when she portrayed Piaf in her old age, one completely forgets that the actress who’s doing the role is a beautiful young lady!
I enjoyed watching , but maybe if I knew some of Piaf’s works I would’ve enjoyed it more, I know Edith Piaf only by name, I don’t know any of her songs, that’s a shame really, she has a wonderful voice,! I would love to know some of her songs, The movie surely succeeded in arousing that in me.

But I have some reservations on the movie,
There’ll be spoilers here.

1-     The order of telling the story is so random, I mean one minute we are in 1963, then it’s 1950, then  when Piaf was a young girl! Ok, I understand that a combination of events and different times are required in these kind of movies, but the randomness made it hard to follow,! It’s like when some one is telling you a story, then suddenly he cuts his line and says: Oh I forgot to tell you that in 1960 she was ……., and then come back to where he left off, and after a while makes the same cut and says, Oh I forgot to tell you that in 1950, she was ……!!!!!
2-     I think the movie is made for those who know Piaf’s work, for there wasn’t any specific mention of let’s say, her hits, and what songs made it to the top, what songs made her famous in the USA, the only song that has some attention was no regrets,( sorry , I don't know its French name) , and it got it because it felt like a summery of her whole life .
3-     The movie is  not realty a biography, for a biography means telling the story of someone’s life, when did she married, how did she meat her husband, how did she meat her close friends , her managers ..etc, we don’t see that in the movie, what we have are the ones who influenced he life, and since her husband wasn’t among those, we barley know even his face!!
4-     Piaf was a young woman in France during the world war 2, !! the war wasn’t mentioned at all!!!

Of course , my notes were only that, MY notes, I’m sure the makers had this movie structure in mind, or maybe it’s the French way which I’m not so used to!!

I've just watched, and I had a great time,
It's very cheerful , and enjoyable, I was watching it with a big smile on my face,
A wonderful light entertainment, and the songs are just great, although I knew the 3 big songs in the Oscar night, and they were great then, but to watch the songs in their context is much more beautiful.
I needed to watch a cheerful movie like this one, after watching China Town 3 days ago!!!
