Cruise not Iron Man looking definite

During French promotions of Collateral, Tom Cruise mentioned that he
would collaborate again with Director Michael Mann ("Heat") on a film
project about the famed WW2 Battle of Britain. Filming is aiming to
begin sometime before 2006, right after Cruise finishes his commitments
to "The War of the Worlds" and "Mission: Impossible 3".

Doesn't look like there's any room in there for Iron Man, so you folks
that didn't want Cruise in the role can do your happy dance now.

Just for the record I thought Tom would have made a great Tony Stark.

Hi,

Due to personal reasons I am having to go to no email for an
undetermined length of time. Hopefully it will be no longer than a
couple of weeks, but who knows.

Also, if you plan on sending me any personal mail, do so in the next
couple of hours, as my net connection is going *poof* for a while as
well.

Hopefully I'll see you all on the other side with a bunch of reviews
ready to share......

:-/

Regards,

Scott.

Another Stargate film in the works

Sounds like another "Stargate" film might happen after all.

A couple of years back, the Emmerich/Devlin team announced that they had
an idea for another "Stargate" film - one that would probably bring back
Kurt Russell - but they ultimately scrapped the idea. "Stargate 2" would
have shown the connection between the Egyptian pyramids and the Mayan
pyramids. A second sequel, "Stargate 3" was also on the drawing board.
It was going to connect every myth on Earth, from yeti to the Loch Ness
monster. Suffice to say, both films fell apart.

Now, seems the sequel plans are back on, but for something on a much
smaller scale - direct to DVD - starring the cast of the "Stargate" TV
show, not the earlier film.

GateWorld says "The show's cast and crew ["Stargate SG-1"] have
mentioned the project at more than one convention over the past few
weeks, and co-executive producer Joseph Mallozzi confirmed to GateWorld
that the project is currently being considered -- but isn't a sure thing
yet. The story currently being considered is set in the show's second
season. Actor Christopher Judge told fans at July's Vulkon convention
that he's interested to see how they will get the cast looking like they
did six years ago."

A film version of the "Stargate SG-1" TV Show was mulled a year or so
back. A Script was even written. What ended up happening though is they
decided not to push ahead with a feature film and adapted the script to
be a two-part season finale.

For me, August was a dull time for watching new movies. But finally September came and along with it a new costume drama!

Vanity Fair

the Cast: Reese Witherspoon (Becky Sharp): I think she has improved in her period piece acting since her role in "The Importance of Being Earnest". Her performance was very well done. James Purefoy (Rawdon Crawley): Though his character was not that appealing to me, his acting was very good. Romola Garai (Amelia Sedley): Even though Romola, one of my favorite actresses, does a lot of costume movies, she plays a variety of characters in them. I don't think this is one of her best performances but still a definite improvement from "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights". Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (George Osborne): His character is so slimy and Jonathan played him perfectly. Rhys Ifans (Captain Dobbin): It was nice to see him in a completely different role than his wacky character in "Notting Hill". I really enjoyed his performance in this film.

the Plot: Based on the classic novel by William Makepeace Thackeray. In the early 1800s, Becky Sharp is a governess who improves in society through her charms and personality.

the Costumes: They were exquisite. The most colorful I have seen in a costume drama.

Overall Impression: I did not get through a reading of Thackeray's novel but I thoroughly enjoyed the film that is based on it. The cast is incredible. Mira Nair has directed another wonderful film (the other wonderful film that I have seen which she directed is "Monsoon Wedding"). This is a delicious costume drama.

Final Score: ****/*****

Quite frankly, the more realistic costuming for the apes was not
even close to enough to make up for the bad writing. The first film
was far more real. Sure, sure, we know it's unlikely that apes will
someday develop the ability to speak human languages without genetic
engineering, but that wasn't really the issue, was it? When the
humans were incapable of sentient thought and intelligent speech in
the original version, it made much more sense for the apes to have
such control over them. While the affinity between hero-boy and the
scientist-lady-ape was in the book, there was also an entertaining
line when they're almost going to kiss and she suddenly backs up
with an embarrassed, "It's just that you're so ugly!" That was
funny, and realistic. And him coming back to a changed Earth in the
book was also there. However, the changed Earth was not to a world
where apes evolved instead of humans.

What they left out in the original movie was well made up for by a
certain adherence to internal logic. What they out in to the remake
was negated by the fact that they made the whole movie illogical.

And don't get me started on the remake of Dawn of the Dead... it had
a lot going for it, but certain changes negated some of its impact.

Oh - the remake of POTA absolutely STANK.  It should have been named "Planet of the great cast and director that consumed too much coke left over by the writers"!

The original sountrack though (and movie to me) was special.

My original email was a response to a list of soundtracks.

Summer, for me, is almost over and so it is time for me to give you a preview of what I am looking forward to in the upcoming year in movies. I have checked several fall previews in newspapers and Entertainment Weekly. I have also checked Internet Movie Database for a full list of what is supposedly being released for the rest of 2004 and early 2005. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot that is sparking my interest. So instead of giving you a list of movies that I am mostly half-heartedly interested in, I decided to just tell you about the two that I have been waiting to see for a long time.

Bride and Prejudice (USA: December 25)
The Bollywood (India's film industry, the movies with lots of song and dance numbers and melodrama) version of Jane Austen's classic novel "Pride and Prejudice". In this modern version the heroine is Indian and the hero is American.
Why: Jane Austen is basically worshiped in my family and "Pride and Prejudice" is basically my family's bible. The director, Gurinder Chadha, also directed "Bend It Like Beckham" which I adore, so I have a lot of faith in her. I am very interested in Indian culture and I think this story will work well in its setting.

The Phantom of the Opera (USA: December 25)
The film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage musical. The musical based on Gaston Leroux' classic novel about the disfigured man who wreaks havoc in an opera house.
Why: It's one of the musicals of my childhood and one of my favorite musicals still.

The question is since both of these are released on the same day which one will I see first? Well, I think that depends on whether or not both of them will be playing at a nearby theater on December 25th. But if they both are, it will definitely be a tough choice.

"Desmond Doyle is devastated when his wife abandons their family on the day
after Christmas. His unemployment and the fact that there is no woman in the
house to care for the children, Evelyn, Noel and Brendan, make it clear to
the authorities that his is an untenable situation. The Catholic Church and
the Irish courts decide to put the Doyle children into Church-run
orphanages. Although a sympathetic judge assures Desmond that when his
financial situation reverses, he will be able to get his children back;
money is hard to come by. During that time, Evelyn and her brothers suffer
the abuses of living in orphanages while Desmond struggles to secure
finances. Now he must battle the courts to get his children back." IMDB.COM

******* That was a good film, when I first heard of it I wasn't even sure
it would be worth seeing one day (Pierce Brosnan as a father in a dramatic
film ? For some reason it didn't seem to fit with his James Bond connection
! ;-) In this one he was pretty good as a man whose wife left him and
left for Australia abandoning their 3 kids as well. There were a few
amusing moments, this was not wall to wall dark and disturbed but in general
it was a good drama, I didn't like the 2nd half as much though, the part
that focused more on the courtroom drama. 3/5 The wee irish actress who
was playing Brosnan's daughter was very sweet and cute too ! ;-)

Cheers !

The Butterfly effect - 2004

Plot Outline: A young man (Kutcher) blacks out harmfull memories of
significant events of his life. As he grows up he finds a way to remember
these lost memories and a supernatural way to alter his life.
Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart, William Lee Scott, Elden Henson, John
Patrick Amedori, Eric Stoltz, Logan Lerman, Melora Walters
Directors: Eric Bress, J. Mackye Gruber

******** Very good film, 3.5/5. I liked the supernatural elements and the
different versions of what happened depending on what Kutcher's character
did or didn't do in the past. It was a lil' confusing sometimes with all
the flashbacks and fast forwards but this was Kutcher's best film so far,
good to see him in a more serious role too, same as Jim Carrey ?? Robin
Williams ?? Those comedic actors in more serious films are often more
interesting to me. Also, I appreciated seeing Melora Walters as Kutcher's
mom.

Cheers !

variety of films, and playing as wide a variety of characters, as he
can. I haven't seen many things he's been in. I remember Remington
Steele, partly because that's airing on a satellite channel here in
Japan these days. I remember his rather hilarious appearance in
Mars Attacks. I couldn't really picture him as Jamese Bond when I
first heard he'd made the cut to be one, but he did it wonderfully.

I totally agree with you, Brosnan was Bond perfectly in my opinion.
Sadly I had heard he is Bond no longer, but I feel he still could have made
at least two more films.

I was interested in watching this film because the trailer appealed to me. I was thoroughly pleased with the actual movie as well.

Garden State

the Cast: Zach Braff (Andrew): I have watched a few episodes of the TV show which he stars in, "Scrubs", and I enjoyed him in that. I think he had a wonderful performance in this film. Natalie Portman (Sam): This is the best performance of hers that I have seen so far.

the Plot: An actor, Andrew, living in Los Angeles returns to his hometown in New Jersey for his mother's funeral. He meets up with a quirky girl, Sam.

Overall Impression: This film is very bizarre. It's like a modern art piece in a museum. I generally do not like modern art, but I did not mind this one. I actually enjoyed this film more than I thought I would. The music is great, I would love to get the soundtrack. It is a cute, artsy fartsy film.

Final Score: ****/*****

I watched another movie to add to my list of Bollywood films that I have seen.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

the Cast: Kajol (Simran): Her character in this movie had a different personality than her character in "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" (the only other movie I have seen her in), much more stern. I appreciate the variety of roles she has, and this one was portrayed very well. Sharukh Khan (Raj): This character was the most rambunctious of his that I have seen. Though sometimes annoying, he was generally amusing.

the Plot: Simran, an Anglo-Indian woman, takes a trip around Europe where she meets Raj. They fall in love but unfortunately Simran must get married, a match which was arranged when she was young.

the Production Numbers: None of the songs really appealed to me too much. But I enjoyed all the production numbers.

Overall Impression: Kajol and Sharukh Khan are wonderful together in this film, as much as they were in their later film "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai". However, this movie had a lack of thrill and appreciation for the characters for me as the Bollywood movies that I love have.

Final Score: ***/*****

Disney Confirms Eisner to Leave in 2006

1 hour, 24 minutes ago

By JILL LAWLESS, Associated Press Writer

LONDON - Michael Eisner, who led the Walt Disney Co. to huge success in the 1980s but more recently clashed with dissident stockholders including the founder's family, will leave the company in 2006 when his contract expires, the company said Friday.

In a letter to the Disney board, dated Thursday and released by Disney's London spokeswoman, Joyce Lorigan, Eisner said: "I plan to retire from my role as Chief Executive Officer of the company upon the conclusion of the term of my employment agreement on Sept. 30, 2006."

Eisner's departure will end a turbulent two-decade relationship with the media giant.

"I know it has been a very challenging time for the board members during this period, and I am most grateful for all of the time and effort, consideration and support, and concern for the company that all of you have demonstrated," Eisner said in his letter.

Over the past year, Eisner's leadership abilities have been questioned by former Disney board members Roy E. Disney, the nephew of founder Walt Disney, and Stanley Gold, who have led a campaign against Disney through their Web site, SaveDisney.com. The former board members said Eisner was responsible for turning the company in the wrong direction. Walt Disney's only surviving child, Diane Disney Miller, also called on Eisner to step down.

Eisner also has lost confidence among investors, namely leaders of state pension funds in six states that have urged Disney to become more independent and more aggressive in finding a successor for Eisner.

While the pension funds together represent less than 2 percent of Disney's outstanding shares, they wield tremendous influence over corporate boards and led an effort that resulted in Disney shareholders withholding 45 percent of votes cast for the re-election of Eisner to the board at a March 3 annual shareholders meeting.

Disney then separated the duties of chairman and chief executive officer, a key demand of the pension funds, stripping the chairman's title from Eisner.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Friday, Eisner said he felt "this was the time to give the board two years notice, so that there will be a comfortable period of succession."

But the newspaper said that it wasn't known whether Eisner, 62, would have been offered a new contract by the Disney board. He has led the company for 20 years.

Eisner recently told Walt Disney directors that company president Robert Iger would be a good successor, the Los Angeles Times reported. Iger, whose contract expires in September 2005, has recently met with investors and executives and told the Times he would like the top job.

Eisner was named Disney's CEO in 1984 and helped rebuild the company by reviving Disney's storied animation unit, expanded its theme parks and created a strong lineup of TV properties including ABC, ESPN and the Disney Channel. Eisner has helped move the company from a capitalization of $2.8 billion to $58.4 billion in the last 20 years.

But Disney has faltered in recent years as the performance of its animated films, ABC broadcast network and theme parks declined. Disney's stock traded as high as $28 in February during what turned out to be a failed takeover bid by Comcast. It closed Thursday at $22.86 on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites).

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - After a tumultuous development history, "Basic Instinct 2" is back on track with Scottish filmmaker Michael Caton-Jones in negotiations to direct MGM's sequel to the 1992 murder mystery.

The move comes within two months of the producers, Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar, settling a three-year-old lawsuit with actress Sharon Stone, who claimed they had promised to pay her at least $14 million even if the film was not made.

Stone is now set to reprise her role as Catherine Tramell, the manipulative, seductive novelist at the heart of a murder investigation in the original. That film, her last big hit, also starred Michael Douglas (news) and was directed by Paul Verhoeven.

The sequel was originally due to go into production in 2000, albeit without Douglas and Verhoeven, who reportedly had problems with each other the first time around. Several directors were attached, including John McTiernan, who pulled out after Stone reportedly vetoed Benjamin Bratt (news) as her co-star.

Caton-Jones has most recently been working on "Shooting Dogs," which is based on the true story of a Catholic priest and an English teacher caught in the Rwandan genocide. Before that, he helmed "City by the Sea," toplining Robert De Niro (news) and Frances McDormand. His other credits include "The Jackal," "Rob Roy" and "Memphis Belle."
