Self described "Humanitarians" such as Odets are often incapable of forming intimate caring personal relationships.  They are caring for their fellow man only in the abstract.  Although it is politically incorrect to say this today India's great "leader" Gandhi was another such person. He treated his wife like an animal and his children not much better.
