Hi, Steve!
It appears that we both sent replies to Jonathan's query around the same
time. I had not seen your message until after I sent mine. Sorry about the
duplicate information.
Thanks for sending TCM so many requests for Fay's films. I've been doing
the same. I hope they're taking notice of all the Fay fans out there,
because we really are starving for more than the usual titles. I love King
Kong very much, but I'd really like to see Unholy Garden, Murder In
Greenwich Village, and Navy Secrets someday. In the meantime, TCM's
mini-marathon on Wednesday is indeed most welcome. It will indeed be a nice
birthday present for the BOTH of us, and a treat for Fay fans everywhere
(assuming that they all receive TCM, that is).
I attended the MONSTER BASH convention in Butler, Pennsylvania last weekend.
As part of their King Kong 70th Anniversary Celebration, movie memorabilia
collector Bob Burns was there with the original 18-inch metal armature used
to animate both King Kong and Son Of Kong. Sadly, the sponge-rubber and
rabbit fur that once covered the metal skeleton has long since cumbled away.
But it was a fascinating thing to see, and I actually got to hold it! Bob
also showed slides of rare Kong production photos that he obtained from
Marcel Delgado many years ago.
Bob Burns also indicated that the American Kong DVD won't be released until
2004. We were all hoping that the DVD would be available for the 70th
anniversary. Now, it appears we'll have to wait for the 71st anniversary
instead. I can't imagine what's taking Warner Home Video so long to release
it. Someone at the convention said that some archival material from Kong
was recently located in England, and that Warner wants to include it in the
DVD, but nobody could say what the archival material actually was. I
certainly hope it will be worth the wait. Personally, I'm hoping that the
DVD will at least be window-boxed, so that nothing from the four edges of
the picture will be cut off. A 16 millimeter print of Kong was shown at the
convention yesterday, and I saw details in the right and bottom edges of the
picture that have been trimmed from every video version I've seen. This
could be a wonderful opportunity for Warner to get everything right and make
King Kong a fantastic DVD, if they would just make a real effort to do so.
Let's all keep our fingers crossed!
John
