I don't get it. Surely if they wanted to kill the show they could have cancelled it without wasting money on a second season? It happens all the time these days. Look at Farscape, Firefly, etc.
 
Oh, and Max, I'm right with you. It always seemed to me like the writers were merely contriving some tittilation here for their own amusement. >:(

Well, Glen Larson(Gary did the Far Side) isn't the one
who came up with that idea. NBC did. They wanted to
kill the series, like they always do with Science
Fiction, look at what they did to the original Star
Trek if you don't believe me, so they came up with the
lamest concept they could think of to make the
audience stop watching. No TV network is immune to
this stupidity, either. ST Enterprise finally came
into it's own in it's final season, but because the
ratings didn't jump 200%, UPN cancelled the show.
