There are also some programs that automatically convert images to ascii art.
For example, ASCII Generator gave the following: (to see it correctly one
must use a fixed-width font like courrier new)

No! I just needed more tyeller (even including the stems enlarged upwards and
downwards it wasnt enough), so i included something to the system that looks
similar to the esse-tehta. But in no way the system i got can be considered as
nice as the real tengwar.

Thank you very much. Ill choose _tengwesta_ because it sounds really good to me.
Its sound remains me the diffrence between the Spanish words _hijo_ (son) and
_hijastro_ (stepson) - which fits perfectly with the meaning i intend. I dont
think ill have checked out any wordlists, i just trust you.

thanx again a lot

** I don't remember my original post (has been long ago), but tengwesta means "grammar".. I think I gave you these words as examples of words derived from the stem tengw-

since you mentioned the difference, it is time to mention that tengwa and tengwesta reminds me of the same analogy with greek "gramma" (letter) and "grammatikee" (grammar) :)

It seems something like this was sent to TolkLang a long time ago:
http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/misc/local/TolkLang/Vol8/8.81 Some of the
letters and the tehtar are a bit difficult to read, though.

here is my catalog of the ascii letters, font based on the 'font' of which BP johnson's signature (melroch) is shown

(I am sure he must have made his own 'font', of which his signature is a mere sample.. if he has done so we would be grateful if he publish it here.. anyway I hope these letters are close to his 'fonts', and that I won't violate any personal copyrighting :))

If it doesn't show well, copy and paste this ascii in an editor using fixed width fonts and disabling the 'wrapping'/'break lines' option

The lines don't match up on my browser and are difficult to read.

Cuio mae, Danny.

~ If you want to criticise someone, first walk a mile in his shoes. Then
you can criticise him; you're a mile away and have his shoes! ~

here is my catalog of the ascii letters, font based on the 'font' of which BP johnson's signature (melroch) is shown

Hi all!

Dwn> The lines don't match up on my browser and are difficult to read.

If one want to use ASCII graphics in HTML letters, then he
must use either a <PRE> tag (better), or <FONT> tag with
fixed width font face (say, Courier), or <TEXTAREA> tag.

However, IMHO, it's best to do not use HTML format in
e-mail letters at all. Plain text is cool ;).

Alexander.

Now I opened the webpage devoted to:

Figlet Fonts Specification
For Tolkien Scripts

Visit http://my.netian.com/~sshiskom/ascii/

Currently there are 5 fonts proposed, namely:

Cirth Eris
Tengwar Riku
Tengwar Gildor
Tengwar Petty
Tengwar BPJ

I finished the spec for Cirth Eris and Tengwar Riku.
They are relatively 'simple', and might be considered
as 'basic fonts'. (Though Tengwar Petty is more 'simple')

How to write specs:

Keep all letters' height same.

For example, Cirth Eris are 4 lines tall,
Tengwar Riku 6 lines. (These height seem to be the minimum)

If some letters are smaller than others,
just fill lines with blank lines,
considering the position of the letters.
(Tengwar Riku would be a good example)

Keep each letter's width same.

Two different letters' width don't need to be same,
but in each letter, each line width should be same.

Again, just fill blanks with spaces.

Now I got some ideas about how to write Figlet fonts,
so if everybody agrees on the specs, I would start to write.

I made a test version of .flf for Cirth Eris, and generate
the Glamdring Inscription as published at Gwaith. It works well.

Following is what I typed:

turgon aran
goNolin
torTa gar
a maTa
glamdriG
vegil glamdriG
gUd daelo dam
an glamhoT

(N for nd, T for th, G for ng, U for uu)

Then the program generated:

No, actually I did only those letters, by hand in a text editor, although
I've thought about creating a figlet font from them. Actually John Cowan
has promised to help with the technical stuff if only I make the designs...

Well, I might have done some details different from you, and I might still
do it some day, tho I'm afraid it will be in the first few months of next
year at the earliest.

This is two words in tengwar that I found on the back of a milk carton some
days ago. The text was about Aragorn, but on the upper right corner these
tengwar was written:

What do you think it is supposed to mean?

The second word is obviously "Daedeloth" misspelled as "daedheloth". The
first word looks like a hypothetical spelling of "gϋd", but if this is
an Eldarin word, I am unfamiliar with it. If it is to represent the
English word "good", I find it odd to be placed with 'Daedeloth'. The
calligraphy is rather nice, whatever it's meant to say!

A Sindarin _-gud_ with the meaning "enemy" appears in _Thuringud_
("Hidden Foe", WJ pp.256, 299). But the isolated form would rather be
*_cϋd_, I think, since this word must reflect a Common Eldarin *_kτtτ_,
derived from the base KOT- "strive, quarrel". It is thus a variant of
_coth_ "enmity, enemy", which is cited in "The Etymologies" as the
second element of _Morgoth_ ("Black Foe").

Well, since JRRT was either born or raised until like age 10 (?) in
South Africa, and they have a large Indian population. I suspect he
had some aquaintence with it before he became a professor.

Sanskrit is more a syllybary than an alphabet. But I have noticed the
similiar look before. But from what I have read, there was a gentleman
in England some 20 years before Tolkien that had an Alphabet that was
almost exectly in form to Tengwar, maybe not in values.

Well, what we call Hebrew (the script) is only one of many scripts the
speakers of Hebrew have used from ancient Egyptian times to recent. To
include the same used for Arabic (modern), as well as Aramaic (the
original script they used was more closed in form, and they adopted
the Aramaic form.

Diecritical marks, well have been around for a while, mostly in lingos
like Arabic and Hebrew as ways to show vowels and like that are often
not needed by fluent readers of the above lingos.

From memory diacritical marks for Hebrew/Arabic were not used much
until sometime after the 16th century (I forget when).

aka Morgoth, I like how it rolls of the tongue. And from what I can
tell, it means like "Dark" "Goth(person)".

Universal Alphabet, I remember it now, yes it looks alot like Tengwar
in form.

Might check Uighur/Tibetan/Mongol/Manchu direction of the lingos that
came form the one for Sanskrit/Prakit.

It can be an interesting inspiration for a lingo, since it is up/down,
and right to left. But the decenders can give you some nice
calligraphy.

For ideas on what it looks like, for possible comparison with
Tengwar..

I do know that many of the lingos of India, and SE and to a degree NE
of India are based on fully or partially on the script that Sanskrit
used.. Some are harder to tell the origin, especially by the time you
get to Java and their script is very curvy.

Examples of Tengwar, most importantly, of Japanese (Sorry no Dev)

http://www.omniglot.com/writing/devanagari.htm

Has charts and all of the script, as well as a history, from the time
of Brahmi.

Another one, is aligned differently, but okay.
This one is interesting, cause it shows the numerals, which are the
origin of our "Arabic" numbers.

Another one from a book.

I do think I need to find my sources for Tibetan and other scriptos.

I wish I had my "Elvish" books, lost it a while back in Canada.

http://www.aczone.com/ilkeyb/ A keyboard program, might be interesting
to see the source code and all, and see if it can be modified for
Tengwar?

It has much forms in common with Tengwar to including some of it's
diacritical marks are the same, or close. Could also be an inspiration
for calligraphy.

But I believe the professor did some work on Indo-European, which is
related to Indo-Iran, and Indo-Aryan (old terms)..

Basically the lingos of India and Iran and yes Afghanistan (Farsi,
Hindi, Urdu and others). So the speaker of Hindi or a related lingo
could see some relavence in the lingos of Middle Earth. Brat (word for
annoying child), comes from India I believe, meaning Brother - Braht
(sp).
