I have noticed that there seems to be a majority in favor of Dan Smith's
Tengwar Scribe for translation purposes, but for the life of me, I cannot
figure it out.  I can get the Scribe to work just fine, but after I hit the
'translate' button, I don't know what to do.  I'm not very good with
computers, so bear with me.  I downloaded what I thought to be the right
file for the fonts [Tengwar Quenya font pack (release 1.9d), from
http://www.acondia.com/tengwar_fonts/index.html], but I don't know how to
get the program to run.  I have winzip, so that's not the problem.  I just
can't seem to get the fonts themselves to show up in Word.  Do I need to
download a different file, or am I doing something wrong?

the program is made by Mans Bjorkman, and its purposes
is not translation but transcription

the fonts are not programs, but just.. fonts.. that
means files with shape information for each "hand"...
all you have to do is to copy the .ttf file in your
fonts directory (usually it's c:\windows\fonts)

ifyou copy there the font files, they will be shown
both in Word and Tengscribe

hi, Maybe I can help

the file you downloaded, if a .ttf file? If so, you
must place the file in C:\windows\fonts\ When you put
it there you should see some window installing the
font, and then you can use it in Word and so on.

make sure that the fonts (tengwar etc.) appear on the
left side - not the source pane but in that font area
with all the other fonts.  if the tengwar fonts aren't
there, you need to install them and then they will be
and then you'll get it.  i just went through all this
:)

i went by the info you guys gave me, i'm confident
that it was right as i also double checked it with
several web sites, books that i could find, and
against the tengwar alphabet.  i found no
inconsistancies anywhere... and I like how it looks
and I know what it says so while i thank you for the
offer of cross reference, i'm comfortable with it.
and if there's a mistake it's only in the form of the
word, which i'm confident there isn't, when i'm home
and not at work i'll send what it says.

Hello everyone,
   I am new here, and I have been reading through the posts from
Johanna trying to figure out a phrase for myself.  I have downloaded
a program called YaTT (Yet another Tengwar Tool) but am kind of
unsure how to use it correctly to transcribe the phrase I want.

There are a few slightly different versions of the meaning of the
phrase I want, because I am not sure which one wouldmake the most
sense in the Quenyan language.

They are as follows:
Child blessed by the crescent moon

child blessed by the earth

Child blessed by the Lady

Child Blessed by the silver moon

Child blessed by the ancient one(s)


I have Quenya fonts downloaded & installed.

Like I said, I am very new to all this, and I apologize if I sem
ignorant, but in this case I am...LOL

I have entered each word into the English-Quenya dictionary included
in the program, but for some of the words, it gives me more than one
option.
i.e.-  for "blessed" it gives: almaarea, herenya, & maana
and I am unsure of which one I would use.

Would you recommend that I download a different tanscribing program?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone ever attempted to concoct any sort of "Tengwaresque"
musical notation?  Nothing I've seen suggests that Tolkien thought
about this himself. I was flipping through 'Letters' last night and
came across one (#?, c.1954) where he admits to certain lacunae in
the description of Middle-earth, including "music and its apparatus".

I think I would go for _aistana_, the word for "Blessed" that recently
turned up in Tolkien's Hail Mary translation.

I don't think the language matters in this case.

If you have the fonts installed, I could give you the %Z&D#-style codes
that would produce the correct Tengwar versions of the Quenya translations
above.

Even if its not obsvious from the posts ; this ML tries to study what
JRR Tolkien wrote, and not add or "concoct" more "sup".

I believe Tengwar in ways is musical notations. Or you could use Rumil
forms, which maybe even more so, musical.

According to Quenya Lapseparma your names are
Veon-Encaitar (veh-on an keye-tar)...

you can see how they would look if you learn to write
with tengwar, and use thestyle written on the ring :)

   The name Neamh is Gaelic for Heaven, I believe. It was a name

   I've had a quick glance at the site (I confess, I'm at work at the moment)
   and will give it a go when I get home tonight.

   I thought when I first looked at it all, like it would be just the same as
   any other font, that you hit the same keys you would if you were typing
   anything else.... but yea, i've noticed from the few things I've seen on here
   that it's not that simple. So, you could say I'm just a little bit unsure so
far.

   The writing is beautiful, my inspiration to understand it came from The Elvin
   Love Rings sold thru another website that my partner and I are having for
wedders.
   I would like to be able to work out how to put something personal on our
invites
   using the tengwar or more so the quenya writing.

luckily it's simple, menel is translated as "Heaven"

the first step is to learn the alphabet, and to write
tengwar with pen, then the font usage with your
keyboard comes later (which is quite complicated)

No. Tengwar is a script, not a language. 'Teithant' is Sindarin for

explained how to write Quenya in Tengwar, and how to write Sindarin in

The name Nθamh was given to me originally as Caile Nθamh - it was a
rough Gaelic version of my earlier chat name of Celestine Empress, so it
basically meant Woman/Lady of the Heavens. So yea, that is kinda apt
given the circumstances.

I couldn't be sure I'm sorry.  My brathair (brother) is the Gaelic
expert. Niamh is familiar... but still not sure. I know Neamh is
pronounced as Neve, so I'm guessing Niamh would be Nive.

Dear Newb, the so called "Quenya Lapseparma", which Gildor
is "promoting", has been made up by "Tolkien-freaks", and does not
contain any _reliable_ information about Tolkien's Elvish.

You "Elvish Name" (Veon-Encaitar) is just "mishmash" ; it is NOT
Elvish.

  cheers for that guys, im getting there slowly but surely, reading
past posts i guess its better to know what my name means in english
first - then change it over. I was never good at learning french so i
guess this is going to take me a while to get a hang of it.

I looked at the q u e n y a  l a p s e p a r m a but I wasn't
convinced by the meanings so I had a go for myself, any corrections
or "where I am going wrong- (most probably(ive probably got it all
wrong), im a newbie not looking for a translation cause i want to do
it myself if someone could point me in the right direction i will
research it myslef.

Andrew-James Taylor –

- Andrew (AN-droo) has Greek origin meaning "strong man"/"manly" -

- James  (JAYMZ) Scottish for "leader" or hebrew for "supplanter"-
ie "displace, overthrow, remove, replace, take the place of"

- Taylor - a tailor -  going by my Scottish clan the surname is
decended from a cameron clansman "Tailear Dubh na Tuaighe"(gaelic)
meaning "Black tailor of the axe".

so for Andrew-James Taylor it would be "strong man-leader, Tailor of
the black axe"???
quenya  - strong = "polda", man = "Atan" , strong man = Polda-Atan ,
leader/chieftain = "haran"
tailor = "Cirithron",  black ="mori-" axe = "pelekko" – black-axe
= "mori-pelekko" - of the black axe – "mori-pelekko-wa"???

so for Andrew-James taylor in "quenya" would be: "Polda-Atan haran,
Cirithron mori-pelekkowa" – this looks a bit long winded any help??

I tried it for my girlfriend as well which looks and sounds a lot
better:
Lynne McPherson

- Lynne (LIN)  welsh for "lake" –

- MacPherson Scottish for "Son of  the Parson" parson - preacher,
priest, etc

and Lynne McPherson would be "lake, son of parson" or "lake,daughter
of parson"
quenya  - lake  = "ailin" or "linya",
son of - parson/preacher/divine – "valya" since its femmine "valya-
iel"???

so Lynne Macpherson would be -  "linya valyiel"????
