I’d just like to preface this article by stating that I’ve recently become
a very big fan of the “anthology concept” for horror, especially when the
entire feature is tied together through some creative means. Hence, I’m
already
a bit excited regarding the new flick heading down the pike called DRIVE-IN
HORRORSHOW. Yes, it will be telling five separate stories that are all
introduced by “The Projectionist” (above) who owns the broken-down drive-in
theater showing each movie. Plus zombies and other creatures work there as the
employees. How f*cking fantastic is that?!
Have a look at a brief synopsis of each of the five flicks: PIG, a tale of
vengeance involving some cocky frat guys who get taught a deadly lesson; THE
CLOSET, about a young boy who thinks he’s found a way to get back at his
emotionally abusive family; FALL APART, in which a doctor who treats the
homeless
is stricken by a strange sickness he catches from one of his patients; THE
MEAT MAN, in which a couple of kids think they may be the next victims of a
cannibal killer stalking their town; and THE WATCHER, set in a forest where two
young couples are terrorized by the titular, animalistic murderer.
Wowzers! That really sounds like some good shit! This flashy piece of genre
brilliance is coming to us from director/co-writer Michael Neel who says,
“I’
m a lifelong horror fanatic. Slashers, monsters, cannibals, zombies,
werewolves—the list goes on, and I love them all. Each story has its own
tone, and
set of challenges: Some are a mix of horror and comedy, like the old Corman
films, and others are more oppressive and tense, without much comic relief. For
certain tales we wanted to deliberately go over the top and stylize them,
and for others we tried to make them seem as real as possible.”
Well, I’m sold. According to Neel, most of DRIVE-IN is already shot and he
hopes to have the whole movie done by early 2009. As for the cast, the only
names that have some slight form of notoriety are two people who have won
SURVIVOR: soccer dork Ethan Zohn and dumb brat Jenna Morasca. For more info and

BBC Reports: A huge blaze at the Reading Festival which spread to 19
vehicles in a car park was started accidentally with a barbecue, police have
revealed.
The alarm was raised at about 1600 BST on Saturday when music fans saw smoke
billowing into the air.
The fire was under control within an hour and no-one was injured.
The three-day festival, which began on Friday, attracted 80,000 people.
Thames Valley Police recorded 294 offences and made 56 arrests in total.
Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire spread to the grass and then
to each car.
Twelve were totally burned and a number of others had heat damage in the
festival's white car park in Mapledurham, a spokeswoman said.
Music fans enjoyed headliners Rage Against the Machine on Friday night with
The Killers topping the bill on Saturday.

I found this headline on the front page of the Great Falls Tribune. (I
will post it under Misc photos)
Unfortunately I dont have any way to acquire the rest of the paper.
Only the front page is listed online. Anyway the SAD News: After 64
years the Westernaire Drive-In in Lewistown, MT is down to its last 2
shows. I live about 550 km (340 mi) north of Lewistown and only
attended there once. It is a classic 1940s outdoor theatre that still
featured a few rows of speakers along with FM sound. The Saturday we
were there in 2003 the entire lot was full. Complete with teenagers on
lawnchairs alongside the original speakers that blared away. I will add
the kids in Lewistown were as well behaved as I have seen anywhere.
Its hard to believe the Westernaire is leaving us since it was the only
Drive-In that I have ever seen at full capacity.
A moment of silence on Sunday in its honor.

For all you SoCal Drive-in Movie fans -- The Van Buren and Rubidoux
drive-ins now have brand new web sites. So rather than calling the
theatre or checking out Fandango.com or MovieTickets.com for show
times, you can now get the latest info directly from the source.
http://www.vanburendrivein.comhttp://www.rubidouxdrivein.com
The new web sites were developed by David VonDerLinn of Tuesday
Creative, who also developed the Mission Tiki's widely acclaimed web site.
http://www.tuesdaycreative.cohttp://www.missiontiki.com
Like the Mission Tiki site, the new Van Buren and Rubidoux sites
convey strong themes, reflecting the renovations and remodeling that
are transforming these Riverside landmarks into thoroughly modern
facilities, without sacrificing their half century tradition of
providing affordable, quality, first run, double feature, motion
picture entertainment.
The Van Buren, located in the historic Arlington orange grove district
of Riverside is being extensively remodeled. The grounds, box office
and snack bar now reflect the local character of the surrounding
community, celebrating its citrus grove heritage. Soon the main
screen tower will be decorated with a 60 x 40 ft. mural reminiscent of
the orange crate labels which advertized the allure of
turn-of-the-century California to people across the country.
The Rubidoux, Southern California's last remaining classic 1950s out
door theatre is also getting a face lift. The Art Deco style, main
screen tower, marquee and box office will remain unchanged, except for
improved landscaping and lighting. The new web site conveys a mid
century, Route 66, road side caf atmosphere. The snack bar will soon
be transformed, realizing this classic American theme in three dimensions.
Danny Galardo (AKA Tiki Diablo), who created the themed architecture
and decorations at the Mission Tiki is also applying his unique vision
to the renovations at the Van Buren and Rubidoux.

I will be going to Provincetown, MA on vacation in mid July. I am
looking for advice as to drive in theatres in the area. I heard of the
Wellfleet Drive In on Cape Cod and I hope to be able to visit it. Are
there any other notable drive ins in the general area that would be
nice to visit (open and closed drive ins)? I can find the open drive
ins on-line but I'd like to know of any closed ones to keep my eye out
for so I can take roadside photos if I drive past them. I'll probably
be traveling through Connecticut, Rhode Island, and the Bronx, NY from
Lancaster Co. PA. I don't know my exact route yet. I'd appreciate
learning about any must see drive ins or any that are closed that would
make for a nice photo oportunity!
Thanks!

Sadly I wanted to pass on to fellow drive-in enthusiasts the pending
closing of yet another drive-in. Hathaway's Drive-in, located in
North Hoosick, NY has been for sale for 3 years and has remained
unsold at this time.
I have found out from the owners that they don't intend on opening
the drive-in again in 2008 and unless a last minute buyer can be
found, they will begin pursuing other sale options for the land(IE,
taking down the drive-in).
If anyone knows of someone interested in puchasing this drive-in,
please feel free to contact me at sm69th@.... I personally am
looking to purchase a drive-in, but do not have the capital yet and
it looks like this drive-in will be gone by the time I do.
Here is the website for those of you that might want to take a final
look:
