MESSAGE 2 : MAHIM JUNCTION IN 12TH Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2010

`MAHIM JUNCTION', THE BOLLYWOOD MUSICAL, PERFORMS AT THE 12TH BRM (NSD
FESTIVAL),

AFTER SUCCESSFUL SHOWS IN HYDERABAD, THE U.K., SINGAPORE AND DELHI.

SUNDAY, JAN 10, 6:30 P.M., 95 MINUTES, KAMANI AUDITORIUM.

TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT NSD AND THE VENUE.

PRESENTED BY SHEKHAR KAPUR & LATA BHASIN. WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY SOHAILA
KAPUR.

Mahim Junction is a spoof on the Bollywood of the 70s with a
contemporary sensibility. The story is set in a slum that has
encroached upon a disused local train platform in suburban Mumbai. The
colourful characters - Radha and Rahim, the lovers; Johnny the drunk,
in love with Ayesha the cross dresser; Kaladhandha, the villainous film
producer, and others - eke out their living in the midst of poverty,
exploitation, corruption and communalism, with the typical joie de
vivre style of Bollywood characters. The musical sings and dances its
way through two stories, a love tale between a Hindu girl and a Muslim
boy, and that of Kaladhandha, who provides the political subtext and
brings the two together for a happy ending in true Bollywood fashion.

MESSAGE 9 : An Appeal for Gombe Mane

18th December 2009

APPEAL

Dear Friends,

One of our grantees under our Arts Education programme, Puppet House
(Gombe Mane), is a registered trust based in Dharwad, engaged in
activities of theatre, education and shadow puppetry. Recently on
December 12, 2009, one of the spaces at Gombe Mane where the lighting
equipments were stored caught fire due to an electric short circuit,
resulting in a loss of around Rs One lakh for the trust.

Rs One lakh is a huge loss for a not for profit organization in these
financially difficult times. IFA staff have themselves contributed and
are now trying to help them to raise funds to rebuild what they have
lost.

We appeal to you to donate generously to Gombe Mane. Your generous
donation towards this cause will go a long way in supporting Gombe Mane
to re-establish and continue its activities.

We look forward to your sympathetic response to our appeal.

All cheques/drafts should be made in favour of ‘Puppet House’, and
sent to No. 9, Suvidha Apartments, 2nd Floor, Kabbur Road, Malamaddi,
Dharwad – 580 007 (Tel: 0836-2441361 and Email: gombemane@...).

The power of cinema lies in capturing the reality in way which is not completely real, it bring to life our dreams, our wishes, our fears and our hopes. It gives life to a kind of world which we desire to have. And doing so it questions the existing world.

Dilli: History in frames

Text masquerading as a poetic prose by Nandan Saxena

History

lingers in the shadows

of the bustling city

The murmurs of yesterdays

warble in the streams

of memory

I cannot decipher

the patterns in the sand

and read

the textures of sunlight

The shadows lengthen

I have no words

to paint on the water

that trickles through

my wet fingers

Dilli: History in frames is a subjective portraiture of the city by Nandan Saxena- a documentary and Poetry film-maker.

The exhibition is on at Delhi O Delhi,

SYNOPSIS:

As every year, towards the end of summer, the olives ripen on the trees. In the picturesque hills and valleys of the West Bank, they turn from bitter green to luscious purple. For the next three months, as autumn unfolds, the owners of the trees and their families - Palestinians and Jews - partake in the timeless ritual of the olive harvest.
In the past, olives branches used to symbolize peace. Today, they serve as a tool in the ongoing conflict about land and territory.
The film followed three characters, Palestinians and Israelis, whose lives were affected or completely changed because of those olives.

''Exploring the use of Olive trees as a political tool, Yoram Sabo’s beautifully shot OLIVE PRESS looks at the Israeli/Palestinian conflict from the point of few of a progressive Mizrahi Jewish woman, a conservative Jewish woman settler and a Palestinian man.''

FILMS TO BE SCREENED AT INDIA INTERNATIONAL CENTRE – 2009

December 19, 2009 – English – 24 minutes -  Living with the Park – Ranthombore National Park  = The film is a look at the popular tiger reserve as an integrated universe comprising its animals and people in the adjoining areas. The forests connects the two and neither one can flourish with the other.  So is the policy of segregating the park as a preserve for animals alienating the people who lived in harmony with the park for decades, helping the Park. There are no quick answers.  The film depicts the main attraction of the park the Bengal Tiger which is in danger of getting decimated here, as it has already happened in Sariska earlier.  Is it time we looked outside the park for the reasons, at the humanity which is living outside, their lives still connected to the Park – the people who are living with the park.  Filmed and directed by Dr. Susan Sharma.

TO CORBETT WITH LOVE -  ENGLISH – 24 MINUTES

Corbett National Park nestles in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is the first national park of the Indian sub-continent and was the launching pad for the region's ambitious conservation plan called Project Tiger in 1974. This 24 minute video was exclusively shot in Corbett Park and portrays the park's magnificent forests with their rich flora and fauna which attract more than 48,000 tourists annually. The park consists tigers, elephants, deer, ghariyals etc. and some 500 odd species of birds. The film looks at the conversion of Jim Corbett, the Nainital- born Britisher who founded the National Park, from hunter to protector of wildlife. In the film you can meet Subedar Ali, the mahout who survived a tiger attack, spent a year in hospital and then came back to work in Corbett Park as a mahout, taking photographers and tourists for jungle trips. The film is a tribute to the silent protectors of the tiger. Filmed and directed by Dr. Susan Sharma. Dr Susan Sharma – director of the film will introduce and have interaction session with audience for both of the films.

This mail has come to me through a friend.

how many of us really feel that in justice should be eradicated and peace should prevail? ask yourselves -- can there be peace without justice?

as some of you may know, i have been working closely with the issue of violence in chhattisgarh... in the capacity of a freelance journalist, im headed to dantewada district in the bastar region of chhattisgarh on december 20.... here is the link of my blog, which will give u more details why im headed to that place which has become a living hell -- tribals from 644 villages have been thrown out; some villages have been burnt over 10 times; women raped; murders rampant daily -- and the perpetrators of this is the state police, through the alibi of salwa judum -- http://priyanka-borpujari.blogspot.com/2009/12/wake-up-stand-up.html

salwa judum began as a people's vigilante group to exterminate naxalism -- but naxalism grew 22 times since salwa judum was launched.... now the centre wants an operation greenhunt -- a genocide!

please read my blogpost to know more.... i would be more than willing to take your queries and doubts, and reply to them... i am also trying to raise funds to take to dantewada, for the satyagraha, which is mentioned in my blog... all i want from you is a minimum of Rs 100 -- the cost of 2 cappuchino coffees with a friend at barista -- which will take care of one adivasi person's one day's food and lodging in dantewada during the satyagraha...50,000 tribals from dantewada alone are expected to congregate at the satyagraha...

the donations need to be made in cash, and you will be furnished with a receipt once i am back from dantewada... the donation would be made to vanvasi chetna ashram, again about which you will read in the blog.... please furnish me with your name, contact number, email ID and the amount you wish to donate....if u are in mumbai, i can come and collect the amount; if u are elsewhere, just mail me your location and your contact number, and i will provide u with my account number...

you might be tempted to think that this does not concern you... that this is not really your responsibility and hence, you'd wonder about the need to respond. but in truth, the idea of civilization, culture and country means that one's problem is everyone's problem and sooner or later effects everyone, especially if the problem is large scale and involves millions of people as it does in this case.... there's a war for justice going on in the tribal hinterland of india. and everyone has a tipping point. justice can be denied someone once, twice, thrice... maybe even 10 times. but there comes a time when those that are denied justice rise up against oppression and then everyone comes in the line of fire, you and me included.... millions of adivasis have been denied justice guaranteed by the constitution. this is an attempt to give them that, so that they don't feel cheated by the country and the government that is supposed to protect them.... and it is everyone's collective responsibility to ensure that they get it, so that they do not lend a ear to those that are telling them to take up guns to get what they deserve. and your sacrifice of two coffees (Rs. 100) like your single vote, goes a long way in ensuring this...

let's, for a change, do something real... lighting candles at gateway of India is a start, but in this case it will be better to save that money on candles and instead give it in the pursuit of justice and fight against violence! you decide....

priyanka

It is unclear how many Afghan women use opium, but a 2005 addiction survey by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) put the number of adult female drug users in the country at 120,000. At least 900,000 Afghans were estimated to be drug addicts out of a population of 25 million in 2005.

Afghanistan has become by far the world's main opium producer, with a share of world supplies that increased from 42% in 1990 to 87% in 2005.

Over the 2000-04 period, and despite adverse weather, yields in Afghanistan were
more than twice those in Latin America, more than three times those in Myanmar, and more than four times those in other Asian countries.

Gol Pary
a shockingly true film

Synopsis: Gol Pary is the harrowing story of a 12-year-old girl heroin addict living in the alleys of Kabul. It is the reflection of our society where access to resources are so sparse, and how lack of awareness oppresses the marginalized. Their almost invisible support system makes the whole situation an abyss.

MESSAGE 6 : Launch of "Rediscovery of India" by Meghnad Desai on 17
Dec.09

enguin Books India

present
a path-breaking account of India’s past and present

THE REDISCOVERY OF INDIA
by Meghnad Desai

on Thursday 17 December 2009 at 4.30 p.m.
at Nehru Memorial Museum & Library
Teen Murti House, New Delhi

with a panel discussion based on the book between
Jaswant Singh, Mushirul Hasan, Ashis Nandy, MJ Akbar
Mridula Mukherjee and the author
to be moderated by Rajdeep Sardesai

A truly remarkable work of historical analysis from a world-renowned
economist and one of the foremost social and political historians of
our time, The Rediscovery of India is a comprehensive account of five
hundred years of Indian history (from the time that Vasco da Gama
landed in India in the late fifteenth century) to make sense of the
present. In many respects it is a postmodern, post-Independence
response to, and an advancement from, Jawaharlal Nehru’s classic The
Discovery of India, which was published six decades ago in 1946.

The Rediscovery of India is the fourth book to be published under
Penguin India’s prestigious non-fiction imprint Allen Lane, the imprint
of ideas, which was launched exactly a year ago, in November 2008, with
Nandan Nilekani’s Imagining India. The other two books to be published
by Allen Lane in India have been NR Narayana Murthy’s A Better India: A
Better World and Gurcharan Das’s The Difficulty of Being Good. The
Allen Lane comprises some of the finest and most prestigious new
non-fiction being written today, and The Rediscovery of India is the
latest addition to this exclusive list.

What has allowed India to sustain its commitment to the democratic
process, given its location in a region that is largely undemocratic?
In this magisterial analysis of the last five hundred years of Indian
history, Meghnad Desai looks at India’s colonial past, its struggle for
independence and its many contemporary conundrums, to discover answers
to the questions that have confronted India-watchers for decades.

Rejecting much received wisdom, including narratives fashioned by
India’s ruling establishment, Meghnad Desai goes back to the beginnings
of the East–West encounter at the end of the fifteenth century. He
tracks its impact on the cultures and politics of the present day, from
the emergence of new classes under colonialism, the influence of
Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi on the idea of Indian nationhood,
to the entirely parallel discourses that developed in North and South
India. Yet this trajectory, this outcome, was not inevitable. Through a
series of ‘Counterfactual Boxes’ Meghnad Desai analyses the accepted
defining moments of India’s past and suggests alternative courses that
history could so easily have taken.

Meghnad Desai draws on a wealth of sources to illuminate India’s
journey to the twenty-first century. Whether it is an examination of
British parliamentary debates on the question of India’s independence,
or the liberalization of the economy after decades of licence-permit
raj, or the state’s complicity in the Gujarat riots, Meghnad Desai’s
original, occasionally iconoclastic, approach to seemingly settled
arguments makes The Rediscovery of India a path-breaking and
comprehensive account of India’s past and present.

Advance praise for the book
‘Meghnad Desai’s learned, elegant and provocative book is sure to
rekindle the debate about the idea of India, its political and cultural
roots and meanings. The reader will enjoy joining the author on his
journey of rediscovery, as he deftly situates the unfolding of India’s
modern history in its global context.’—Sugata Bose, Gardiner Professor
of History & Director, South Asia Initiative, Harvard University

About the author
Meghnad Desai was born in Vadodara, Gujarat, and received his BA and MA
degrees from the University of Bombay. He went to the US in 1961 where
he completed a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. He taught
economics from 1965 to 2003 at the London School of Economics, where he
now holds the post of Professor Emeritus. He has authored over twenty
books and two hundred articles. His recent books include Marx’s
Revenge: Resurgence of Capitalism and the Death of Statist Socialism;
Nehru’s Hero: Dilip Kumar in the Life of India; Development and
Nationhood: Essays on the Political Economy of South Asia; Rethinking
Islamism: Ideology of the New Terror; and a novel, Dead on Time.

Meghnad Desai has been an active member of the British Labour Party
since 1971. He was made Lord Desai of St Clement Danes in 1991, and was
awarded the Bharatiya Pravasi Puraskar in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in
2008. He divides his time between London, Delhi and Goa.

The Right to Share and The Promise of Open Video in New Delhi.

A Brief Abstract of the two discussions and the profile of the speakers
are given below:

The Right to Share: What Does Copying Have to Do with Freedom?

The Internet has unleashed the potential to communicate and collaborate
like never before, and the result has been an unprecedented flow of
culture and information. Millions of individuals are now sharing and
creating culture: copying, cutting, remixing, and participating in new
and different ways.

Sometimes this activity is transformative. Sometimes it's straight
copying. In either case, there is a clear connection between this
sharing of culture and personal freedom.

This talk will explore how various conceptions of "freedom" have shaped
the social movements for free software, free culture, and free
knowledge, and how this ideology has manifested itself in real action.
It will connect theory with practice, exploring the cultural
innovations and political changes that have spawned forth from these
movements. Lastly, it will make the case that the broad-based
availability, accessibility, and abundance of culture is a good thing
for our global society.

Speaker:

Elizabeth Stark is a leader in the global free culture movement. She is
a Fellow at the Yale Information Society Project and a Lecturer in
Computer Science at Yale University. A graduate of Harvard Law School,
Stark founded the Harvard Free Culture Group and served on the board of
directors of Students for Free Culture. While at Harvard, she was
Editor-at-Large of the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology, and worked
on using new media to promote human rights with the Harvard Advocates
for Human Rights. Elizabeth has worked extensively with the Berkman
Center for Internet & Society and has taught courses in Cyberlaw,
Digital Copyright, Technology and Politics, and Electronic Music. She
recently produced the inaugural Open Video Conference in NYC, garnering
over 8000 viewers across the web. Elizabeth regularly gives talks
around the world on free culture, and has collaborated with myriad
organizations on promoting shared knowledge and the open web.

The Revolution Will Be Recorded, Remixed, and Redistributed: The
Promise of Open Video

Between news, cinema, television, and documentary film, we find
ourselves swimming in a sea of moving images. This has been the story
of the 20th century. Yet in this age, the tools for creating and
sharing video are becoming widely distributed in the hands of millions
of individuals. Desktop video editing software is pervasive; webcams
and video-equipped mobile phones abound. Video now belongs to everyone.
It is becoming a powerful medium for self-expression, a kind of
cultural currency.

How will this phenomenon change the Internet? How will it change
society? What questions persist for the architecture of the Internet,
and how will public policy address this ultimately political
transformation? This talk sets forth a vision of networked video as a
truly participatory medium, one that will power the next 10 years of
innovation on the web. Dean Jansen and Ben Moskowitz introduce some
core technologies for open video, and the obstacles they face on the
road to mass adoption.

Speakers:

Dean Jansen is a Free Culture activist and guerrilla artist based in
New York. He attended Harvard University and was a leader in the
Harvard Free Culture Group.

Dean assisted in teaching media studies and law courses at MIT and
Harvard, and has organized numerous academic conferences.

He currently serves as outreach director at the non-profit
Participatory Culture Foundation, makers of the Miro internet TV
player. His art projects can be viewed at www.notthemessiah.net.

Ben Moskowitz is general coordinator at the Open Video Alliance, a
coalition to democratize the moving image. Ben co-founded the UC
Berkeley chapter of Students for Free Culture and taught a seminar on
the politics of piracy at Berkeley's School of Information.

He currently serves on the board of directors of the international
organization Students for Free Culture, dedicated to promoting access
to knowledge, technological freedom, and participatory culture.

MESSAGE 15 : The Revised Kamasutra-- an Akshara Dramatised Book Reading

Richard Crasta's applauded novel: The Revised Kamasutra. Why not give
adolescence and sex a whirl? About the growing up of a small town boy
(Mangalore) with hilarious consequences.

Date: Sunday, December 20, 2009
Time: 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Location: Akshara Theatre, Baba Kharak Singh Marg (nxt RML Hosp
Emergency Gate 5) N. Delhi

Richard Crasta’s wickedly funny novel recreates the experience of
growing up in small-town India under the watchful eyes of nuns,
priests, teachers and parents. But the well-established social
structures, peer groups and hierarchies go for a six when the twin
distractions of the Opposite Sex and Logic make their appearance.
Awkward, nostalgic, hilarious, redolent with the spices of India’s
south-west coast, The Revised Kama Sutra is a delightful romp through
the fuzzy yearnings of adolescence and the first glimmerings of
self-awareness.

Jalabala Vaidya, Sunit Tandon, Vikalp Mudgal, Dhruv Shetty, Shubham
Vaish and Kinjal Dua are the performers in The Revised Kama Sutra.
Director: Jalabala Vaidya; Music & Graphics: Gopal Sharman. Entry free.

Audience and performers get together after the show for refreshments at

The power of cinema lies in capturing the reality in way which is not completely real, it bring to life our dreams, our wishes, our fears and our hopes. It gives life to a kind of world which we desire to have. And doing so it questions the existing world.

FILMS TO BE SCREENED AT INDIA INTERNATIONAL CENTRE 2009

December 19, 2009 English 24 minutes -  Living with the Park Ranthombore National Park  = The film is a look at the popular tiger reserve as an integrated universe comprising its animals and people in the adjoining areas. Is it time we looked outside the park for the reasons, at the humanity which is living outside, their lives still connected to the Park the people who are living with the park.  Filmed and directed by Dr. Susan Sharma.

TO CORBETT WITH LOVE -  ENGLISH 24 MINUTES

Dr Susan Sharma director of the film will introduce and have interaction session with audience for both of the films.

I’m writing to tell you about VIVIDH, a new program Video Volunteers (VV) is launching. I hope you can be part of it!
Imagine a journalist, activist or government official receiving a press release and a video in her inbox and it reads, “The practice of Untouchability in schools in India is a problem many people assume no longer happens. Well, last month, 60 community journalists investigated the issue in every state in India, and found troubling visual evidence of the practice across the country. These activist-journalists are rallying their communities to address this issue. Will you join them in speaking out? See the proof, realize the scale of the problem and take action!”
Clicking on the link leads you to a video gallery with 60 short videos, each from a different region/state, demonstrating the widespread nature of this issue and other problems. The main video provides a journalistic roundup of the overall problem.  Other links lead viewers to take concrete action to combat the issue.
As activists we know how people’s issues are usually left out of the mainstream media. We at Video Volunteers believe that the only way to change this situation is for the underprivileged communities to create their own media. We are passionate about empowering community voices and have a well-worked strategy to create campaigns targeted to decision makers and the media for highlighting real issues facing India.

To this effect, we are launching VIVIDH - Community Journalism program where we will give fellowships to 60 local activists from across the country and train them in video journalism. The long term outcome of the CJ program is to create a video news agency from the poorest parts of the world, a sort of Reuters for the slums and villages that enables news agencies to access fascinating personal stories of social change and human rights from the most rural and remote parts of the country. The mainstream media we are negotiating with are interested in vivid stories of local corruption and the non-implementation of otherwise pro-poor government policies. By unifying dozens of local stories from around the nation into an accessible media package for the mainstream media, we will bridge the gap between demand for content and the media exposure our issues need.

We need your help to identify these 60 people who VV will train as Community Journalists. We want one or two fellows from every state and Union Territory in India.
VV will recruit the best possible candidate in your area who fulfills the following criteria:
  1. Associated with social movements, human rights campaigns and/or NGO’s
  2. Belong to a disadvantaged background
  3. Strong interest in communicating local stories to the world
  4. Basic knowledge of computers desirable
  5. Willingness to work full-time on this project for at least one year
  6. Can communicate in Hindi or English
We request you to nominate candidates from your areas. Please forward this mail to them or alternatively fill out the application form here on their behalf. We will be happy to email you the application form if you prefer to print it out.

We also need your help in passing this information to social movements/human rights campaigns or NGOs in other parts of the country from where we can find interesting candidates.

VIVIDH will be the eyes and ears and of the communities, voicing the many struggles and stories that the rest of the country ought to hear and see. I hope you will take some time and make this possible.

Thank you for your solidarity and support.

In harmony,

Called these gentlemen up to find out. To get some help on how to quote?
Asked them. How could one work out a costing if our travel distances varied.
One film maker being in Kashmir another in Delhi and Mumbai and so on.
Sweet lot. Totally polite and apparently cooperative with no idea what was going on.
Quite sincerely I am informed all costs have to be calculated from Sugarcanr HQ i.e. Coimbatore
Was told I needed to speak to someone higher up called Pratap,
who was in a meeting with yet another higher up
Left my number with them requestingthe Gentleman in authority (Pratap) to call me.
No response as yet.

The power of cinema lies in capturing the reality in way which is not completely real, it bring to life our dreams, our wishes, our fears and our hopes. It gives life to a kind of world which we desire to have. And doing so it questions the existing world.

Hi all

I work with CREA (Creating Resources for Empowerment in Action) , a feminist human rights organization based in New Delhi, India, and led by women from the global South. CREA promotes, protects, and advances womens human rights and the sexual rights of all people by building leadership capacities; strengthening organizations and social movements; creating new information, knowledge, and resources; and influencing social and policy environments. For more details, please check  www.creaworld.org

I'm looking for resources on the following themes:

1. Disabled, lesbian, sex worker groups of women and artists from South Asia in art, drama, music, dance, popular media etc.

2. Films and other audio-video resources on girls and women who are challenging and breaking stereotypes (women boxers, cricket teams,  sports persons, truck drivers etc). Films celebrating these achievements of women.

Thanks and Regards
Sanjana

Someone should tell (and educate) the organisation seeking quotations that
film makers are not suppliers of car parts or mineral water jars, that they
be asked to give quotations per minute film!
