BBC Ouch's Holiday Podcast & Mat Fraser's Christmas Song!   Message List

Happy Holly daze!  If you're a friend of disTHIS!, odds are you've heard of, possibly thought about and maybe even discussed, the 'differences' between British disability culture and that which has evolved stateside.

The OUCH podcast, featuring mat Fraser and Liz Carr, who have both been showcased at disTHIS! screenings are two of my personal favorite examples of Brit crip culture at it's most irreverant.  If you haven't listened yet -- make the effort, you'll be glad you did. The OUCH podcast is always a hoot to listen to, but Mat & Liz have outdone themselves on the most recent Holiday edition of the pocast because ...

It's CHRRRISSSTMASSSS! And along with the podcast comes a very special present -  that's right, OUCH's very first Christmas single, performed by, you guessed it, podcast host Mat Fraser!

In the great tradition of all those festive singalongs that have leapt to the top of the pop charts over the years - Paul McCartney's "A Wonderful Christmas Time," Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Elmo & Patsy's "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" (well, okay, maybe not Elmo & Patsy's effort). OUCH's single, however, features some very 'special' lyrics written for all you equally 'special' people gathered round your fire, roasting your chestnuts and toasting your seasonal disability benefit bonus with a medicinal glass of eggnog.

Yes, the 22nd edition of the newly double award-winning OUCH Podcast is a very special one. Very special indeed. Because for one night only, OUCH took over the BBC's splendid Radio Theatre in central London and recorded the show in front of a live studio audience!

Instead of the usual talk format, they've got a festive disability-themed quiz which, amongst other things, delves into the dusty BBC archives for some classic (and not so classic) clips.

The teams are presided over by our everso strict question mistress, Miss Liz Carr herself, and feature some great guests. Podcast co-host Mat Fraser is partnered up with deaf stand-up comedian Steve Day, and the other team features OUCH regular Laurence Clark with actress Julie Fernandez of Eldorado and The Office fame.

There's live music too, courtesy of piano genius and 'human iPod' Derek Paravicini, who is joined by Laurence for a couple of fabulous festive singalongs.

And where's roving Rob Crossan? Well, we dress him in a silly outfit and send him out into the audience to meet some of our listeners and get their help on a few of the quiz questions.

Finally, as if all that weren't enough, there's the first ever performance of the Ouch Christmas single, Cripples at Christmas, written and sung by Mat Fraser. Don't forget you can download it for free, right on BBC's OUCH website.

Photos & video

Don't forget that the OUCH Podcast is now thoroughly multimedia! Check out their photo stream on Flickr, where we've got pics from the BBC Radio Theatre!

OUCH is also on the video-sharing site YouTube, where you can watch fantastic clips of Podcast highlights, including Christmas carols sung like you've never heard before.
