Performers with disabilities are taking the dance world by storm, and amazing things are being done by both dance companies and individuals. This month we invite you to get down with disTHIS!
That's right, following the screening we will push the chairs aside and boogie down with our very own disTHIS! dance party. So get ready to shake your groove thang as part of the disTHIS! disCanDANCE DisCo InFerNo!!! November's event and post movie bash will be all about you sharing your best dance moves with us!
Before we boodie down, our ever-popular talkback discussion this month will bring together an A-list of guest speakers: author Simi Linton discussing the meaning of dance in disabled people's lives, along with internationally renowned choreographer and dancer Heidi Latsky (who will show a sneak preview of FROM THE LIMB, featuring disTHIS' own Lawrence Carter-Long as a guest performer), dancer Jeffrey Freeze (of "Dirty Dancing" fame), dancer/choreographe
Please note: Simi Linton will be capturing the festivities for her documentary "Invitation to the Dance" and will have a film crew on hand. That's right, not only does disTHIS! give you a chance to see the best of disability in cinema, but this month you might be included in a movie about disability yourself! Participants will be asked to sign a release when you arrive so footage of you can be included in the film. Your participation is voluntary - you are under no obligation to sign. But, c'mon... it is really just a formality, you know you want to.

About the films:
Phoenix Dance Short-listed for an Academy Award in 2005, Karina Epperlein's extraordinary film shows us the beauty and strength of one individual who defies conventional expectations of what it means to be “disabled.” In March 2001, Homer Avila – who had been dancing with Twyla Tharp, Bill T. Jones, and Mark Morris – discovered the pain in his hip was cancer. One month later, his right leg and most of his hip were amputated. What unfolds is the story of the pas de deux called “Pas”, which the renowned Alonzo King choreographed for Homer, now dancing with one leg. (22 minutes)

The disTHIS! Film Series, a program of the Disabilities Network of NYC in association with DCTV, showcases independent and international short, documentary and feature films with disability themes you are unlikely to see elsewhere. disTHIS! movies are always provocative; never what audiences expect. No handkerchief necessary, no heroism required. This is disability through a whole new lens. We are made possible, in part, by the generous funding of The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and through audience support.
disCanDANCE is made possible in part with public funds from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
