Get "Naked with disTHIS! Monday, March 2nd @ NYU!   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #163 of 187 |
Join the Disabilities Network of NYC and the NYU Council for the Study of Disability on Monday, March 2nd as we screen the critically-acclaimed documentary Naked on the Inside. In this extraordinary, revealing film, six people share their feelings about their bodies with award-winning Australian director Kim Farrant who asks "beneath our clothes and skin, who are we?"

disTHIS! regulars might recall David Toole, who appears in the film and dances without legs, from our 2006 screening of The Cost of Living. Also profiled in "Naked" is Carré Otis was an A-list supermodel who dieted her way to a heart seizure. Marcus Van is a butch lesbian with a beard, who binds his double-D breasts before going to his job teaching Sunday School in Taipei. Rick Stray is a mother of two with breast cancer; Shirley Sheffield is proud of her 350 pounds and José Aleman is a former L.A. gang member who carries the scars and tattoos of his violent past with him. As each person opens up to the camera, mulling their own thoughts about self-image while creating a naked self-portrait — they ask themselves and the audience: Why is it an act of bravery to accept your own skin and shape? Length: 81 minutes.

Also showing the following short subjects:

G.I.M.P. Boot Camp: Hilariously navigates social expectations of “able-bodiedness” and disability. Sparked by a fictitious, but all too familar "CRIP Awards" ceremony, this short subject by Danielle Peers and Melisa Brittain offers a sardonic testimonial from a recovering inspiration addict, and uses sexiness and humor to deconstruct common stereotypes of disability. Length: 8 minutes.

Sexxxy: CineKink award winner Loree Erickson dares to ask (and answer) the provocative question: "Who says wheelchairs aren’t sexy?" Length: 3 Minutes
February's screening was filled to capacity!  To RSVP and reserve YOUR seat call 212-284-4160 or email us at: disthis@...

ABOUT US: The disTHIS! Film Series: disability through a whole new lens, a program of the Disabilities Network of New York City, was started in April 2006 to showcase festival quality, cutting edge short, documentary, feature and experimental films that offer ground-breaking interpretations of the disability experience beyond "movie of the week" cliches.

Acclaimed by film lovers with and without disabilities, disTHIS! has been featured in Disability Studies Quarterly, the Tribeca Trib, the New York Nonprofit Press, Able News and the New York Times Sunday Style section (above the fold!) for presenting quality disability cinema with the promise of "No handkerchief necessary, no heroism required!" disTHIS! films are frequently funny (and meant to be), remarkably sexy (just like our audiences), often controversial (because we like that sort of thing). Always provocative; never what audiences expect. Monthly screenings are followed by audience “talk-backs” and regular appearances by filmmakers, actors and other guests.
In February 2009, disTHIS! began a partnership with New York University's Council for the Study of Disability to present screenings at NYU. disTHIS! is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency, and the generous support of the United Way of New York City, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, the Screen Actors Guild, the NYU Community Fund, Bat Entertainment and our members
