Next @ the disTHIS! film Series: disability through a whole new lens, Wednesday, April 2nd:

READ MY LIPS (Sur Mes Lèvres)
In READ MY LIPS Carla, an overqualified, unappreciated and nearly deaf employee of a property development firm, is often ridiculed by co-workers while they take credit for her best work. In time, Carla manages to get Paul – an unskilled ex-con – hired as an assistant, despite his complete lack of office experience. After Paul uses his talents to reclaim a file a co-worker has lifted from Carla’s desk, the favor is repaid as Carla and her aptitude to lip read set in motion sweet revenge against a crooked loan shark.

READ MY LIPS works as both an unconventional romantic drama and a thriller because the extreme care taken to develop the characters. This attention makes Carla and Paul exceptionally real — imperfect, ignoble, introverted, each with something to learn from the other.  Carla and Paul not only form an alliance, they ultimately renew themselves by ripping off unsavory characters. The film is a rare and unusually successful cinematic hybrid; a terrific suspense yarn that utilizes Carla’s disability but wisely refuses to rely on stereotypes or rely on simplistic blueprints toward achieving its dramatic, mind-bending conclusion.

Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco chronicle reported:

“Read My Lips is not a heist film, a thriller, a twisted romance, a film noir or a character study, but a unique concoction that bends all these genres to its vision.”

Roger Ebert of AT THE MOVIES and the Chicago Sun-Times wrote:

“Read My Lips is not about deafness, lip-reading, crime or sex, but about … discovery; the plot simply provides the rails on which it rides.”

Jonathan Foreman of the New York Post reported:

“Read My Lips isn't just scary, charming and delightfully unpredictable - it's also smarter and subtler than any new movie out there.”

The disTHIS! The Tribeca Trib, New York Nonprofit Press, the NY Times Style Section and Disabilty Studies Quartely all agree: No handkerchief necessary, no heroism required, disTHIS! is disability through a whole new lens. We are made possible by the generous support of The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, members of the Disabilites Network of NYC and our audiences.

Coming in May 2008... Play "Vegetable, Vegetable or Vegetable" LIVE and IN PERSON as we welcome Mat Fraser and Liz Carr from the BBC's OUCH podcast at our 2nd anniversary celebration!

And in June 2008, fresh from their bombastic premiere at the SXSW Festival, disTHIS! is pleased to present the band "too hardcore for Radio 4" and the critically acclaimed documentary of the same name, Heavy Load! Did we mention they might gig, as well?
