If your lucky enough to live in Australia <g> there is a fantastic article on
David in today's (19/9) Age magazine "Good Weekend". It's titled "The Mild One"
and gives a great insight into David's younger years and his relationship with
his mother (come grandmother) and his father, as well as the struggle between
the Campbell and Barnes families to raise David, and his grandmothers/aunts
reactions to his new found fame. Very interesting!

I saw David three times last week at the Cinegrill in Hollywood, and he's in
fine form. He's looking forward to the opportunity to get back to Australia for
a bit with his performance in the football game. He explained that it's
equivalent to our Superball here. I was very disappointed that he cancelled his
San Francisco performances to appear there. But I'm glad he'll get a chance to
see Natalie. I know how difficult long distance romances can be. I'll see him
again tomorrow (Saturday, September 19th). September 26th is our one year
anniversary. I first saw him at the Plush Room in San Francisco, and wound up
going to Sydney in April to see him in Les Mis. I also got to meet Natalie
while I was there. It was a wonderful trip, and Adam and Penny were wonderful
to us. Hopefully we'll get to return the favor in December if they're able to
come here.

For those that haven't been able to see the Hey Mr. Producer video yet
(including us unfortunate enough to have an extremely pathetic PBS
station that hasn't shown it yet), I found a Real Video clip of "The
Wedding" and "Last Night of the World" from the Miss Saigon section.
This clip is of that ENTIRE section, is 3 minutes long and 1 Mb, so it's
a BIG file. It took me 5 minutes to download it on a 56K connection.
If I haven't scared you off, enjoy!

I have just been listening to the cutdown version of the HMP concert on Radio 2. It was heavily edited, but they did keep the two Martin Guerre songs, and David singing with Lea Salonga.
I'm still not sure about the new 'I'm Martin Guerre'. This version of the song is very much faster than the original. No complaints about David, he got into the character and sang with feeling.
As I understand it, the CD should be available in England in about 6 to 8 weeks time.
The video is not expected out, at least over here, until November. It is being targetted at the Christmas market.
This was just posted on the Anthony Warlow list. Has anyone heard
confirmation of this from another source?

Hi all,
I'd like to introduce myself. I was on this list for about..oh, about
one day right after it was created, but I had to unsubscribe for the
summer.
I discovered David's music back in February when I was in Australia for
study abroad (with a bit of holidaying thrown in.) I made a point of
seeing all of the major theatre productions while I was there, and of
course I saw Les Mis..two nights in a row! I thought that the entire
cast was terrific, but to be honest, David's performance didn't stand out
to me.
Then I went to Brisbane for a week and picked up the No. 1 Musicals CD.
I instantly fell in love with David's two songs on that compilation and
played them over and over. The next Saturday I was back in Sydney. The
last of David's Theatre Royal concerts was the next night, but I hadn't
decided if I wanted to go. I ended up in the HMV in the Pitt St mall
listening to Taking the Wheel on the headphones. I stood there and
listened to it for probably 20 minutes. Then I marched right to the
Theatre Royal box office. :)
Tickets were sold out, but I was very persistent and finally got a ticket
that had been returned just minutes before the show started. It turned
out that I was third row center and what a seat! I was really blown away
by the performance. Those that have never seen one of David's concerts
are really missing something. As I wrote in my journal that night, "I
have never been more thoroughly entertained." :)
While I regret that it looks like I will not be able to see David perform
on American soil this time around (surely there are some good cabaret
clubs more inland), I am glad that his CDs are readily available in the
US. I look forward to his next CD.

The only information I have heard so far is that the video will be released around Christmas time. The rehearsals in front of selected audiences were filmed as well as the two main concerts so I am not quite sure what to expect from the video. Like other such events, it may appear on TV over here in a cutdown version prior to Christmas. If I hear anything else I will let you know.
Thanks for your message, Alison.

Subject: [david-campbell] Hi folks
I have just subscribed to the mailing list and thought I'd say hello.
I first heard of David in connection with Les Mis and saw him as Marius in
April.
I then saw him in the West End Cares cabaret in London. The audience, many
of whom hadn't seen him before, gave David a warm welcome. It was great to
hear him sing as himself and I thoroughly enjoyed the show.
I also saw him at the Hey Mr Producer concert.
Are there any other English fans out there?

Greetings from Boston!
I became a fan of David's after hearing his second CD and would
like to obtain the sheet music to any or all of the songs. Most
especially, I'd like to get the music to "Grateful"; however,
it's not available in the US, as far as I know. Anyone know how
or where I can find this?
Thanks,

Here is our first report from David Schwartz about the Australia Cabaret
Convention:
Subject: First night of Sydney Cabaret Convention
Sent: 6/29/98 5:03 PM
Received: 6/29/98 6:46 PM
Stu,
Last night was the opening night and the Cabaret Space at the Sydney Town
Hall was filled. It will be quite a week with approximately 178
performers
participating in 65 acts. The majority of the time is given over to
showcasing talent and so the results can be quite mixed, as you might
imagine.
What follows is a very personal view of the night, so here goes: A local
performer named Genevieve Lemon is acting as MC. She is quite a talented
singer/comedian. The first night was bracketed by star turns from Lana
Cantrell, Australian by birth and New Yorker by residence, and David
Campbell, a man with a huge future whose talents have grown immensely
since
I first saw him 3-4 years ago in ONLY HEAVEN KNOWS. Lana opened the
evening with "When you wish upon a star" and proved that the passage of
years has not been harsh on her voice. She will be performing in the Gala
Evening on Sat night.
David Campbell chose much more adventuresome target by performing a
bracket
of 5 songs from John Bucchino's show URBAN MYTHS. His last song in that
bracket was the stunningly beautiful and moving song GRATEFUL which was
the
opener of his second CD, TAKING THE WHEEL. Finishing the evening on such
a
contemplative note was both risky and brilliant. Even this early in what
promises to be a long career he has learned the are of economy and
understatement, allowing the material to make its impact. A fantastic
ending.
And what came in between Cantrell and Campbell? Well, there were 9
showcased acts in all, including turns by single acts (Derek Metzger,
Adele
Johnston, Rob Martin, David harris, Fiona Leigh Jones and Avigail Herman),
some comedy/song from the Tiboldi Brothers, jazz close-harmony work from a
quartet called Vocal Design, and truly elegant jazz styling by Janet
Seidel. The highlights for me were Avigail Herman, a witty and bright
performer who wowed with the Cleo Laine number CONTROL YOURSELF, and Janet
Seidel, a cool professional with a sort of Barbara Carroll sensibility,
who
did a great rendition of Hoagy C's SKYLARK. In addition, there was a very
funny version of THE MAN THAT GOT AWAY from Genevieve Lemon.
Tonight promises to be more of same, though no celebrity acts are listed.
More about that tomorrow.
David Schwartz

Hi all,
Can anyone else comment on this. The last thing I heard (quite a
while ago) was that the Fan Club as listed in the CD slip was not
getting much response. it may have been due to that, why it closed...
I will try to ask Les and or David ASAP.

Hi eveyone,
Does anyone belong to a David fan - club ?
I have heard that the fan - club mentioned on the homepage doesn't exist
anymore, so has anyone heard where there is another, if anyone has can
e-mail and let me know.
If not I think someone should start one up in Australia as I thought
that this was the only one in Australia.
Thanks

Hi Guys...
Just got back from the Gershwin concert at the Cremorne Orpheum... what a
great show... just trying to unwind so I can get a *little* bit of sleep
before work tomorrow - Modayitis here I come ;-)
Oh well - it was worth it :-)
I'll try to put together a full report. David was excellent as always...
singing some great Gershwin songs with the energy and sensitivity we've
come to expect... Tim Draxl (the big discovery from David's Masterclass
at Strathfield) was a huge hit - his duet of Strike Up The Band with
David, accompanied by Neil Jensen on the Wurlitzer theatre organ was a
real highlight. This guy is going to go places. I spoke to him during
intermission - mentioned that I'd seen David's first show at the Stables
theatre, and I got the same sort of feeling... and that I hoped I be
seeing him scaling similar heights to David in four years time. A
prominent theatre administrator standing nearby said "Oh - I don't think
you'll be waiting that long!"
David as usual was very generous with his time - signing CDs and posing
for pictures during intermission and afterwards... I said g'day to him
and got a CD signed for a young friend - and was cursing not taking a
camera - oh well...
Just the cabaret convention to look forward to now!
David and Tim are both performing at th Red Cross fundraising dinner at
Star City on Tuesday, then he's flying to the US on Wednesday.
I better try to get soem sleep...
Seeya... Chris

Hi everyone,
For all you guys going to the Gershwin Concert and Cabaret Convention, us poor
unfortunate people who live in other states want to know every last detail. We
also want pics so if you can get any I would love to see them on Adam and

I must say that I totally agree with all the raves his performance on
Midday has been getting. I'm travelling from Canberra up to Sydney
with a few friends (all dedicated fans) this weekend especially for the
Gershwin concert. Its just a shame he's not staying in the country any
longer!
Here's looking forward to a great night on Sunday
Lynn

Hi guys...
Yep - got to watch the video last night - he certainly performed well -
both the song and the interview :-)
Anyway, I've got the Gershwin concert at the Orpheum on Sunday night, and
then his appearance at the Cabaret Convention to look forward to... but I
guess that's the last we'll be seeing of him in Sydney for a while...
(anyone else going to those??)
As for Hey, Mr Producer - I can't wait to see it either - an amazing
collection of performers! My guess is it will be the same deal as the Les
Miz 10th Anniversary concert, so hopefully it will end up on the ABC here
in Oz... and hopefully I'll be able to add it to my laserdisc collection
:-)
Seeya... Chris

Subject: [david-campbell] David's Midday Appearance/Hey Mr Producer
Concert.
WOW,
I have just seen David perform on Midday and once again he blew me away!
This guy is an extremely talented entertainer.
Does any body know if the Hey Mr Producer Concert/Cameron Mackintosh
tribute concert will shown be shown on Australian Television, I would love
to see it.

Hi all,
I last night did some changes to the web site and I started thinking......
(oh gasp!!!)
For those of you on the mailing list, can you please give me an indication
if you would like me to send an e-mail to the list whenever I change the
web site.... I don't want to bombard people with e-mail unless they really
want it!
Send any comments to panda@...
Regards,
Adam
