BWW's First Look at the Australia Concert Poster for Bernadette Peters' Adelaide Cabaret Festival Performances
Back to the Article

by BWW News Desk

Adelaide, Australia-

Now in its ninth year, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival (Adelaide Festival Centre) promises to dazzle audiences when it opens on 5 June, 2009 under the new Artistic Directorship of Adelaide born entertainer David Campbell. Campbell will oversee the festival over the next three years.

Appearing in her only Australian performances, musical theatre icon Bernadette Peters will headline the festival, performing in the Festival Theatre on 6 and 7 June.

Bernadette Peters is among the crème de la crème of live stage performers and a multiple Tony Award-winning star. Throughout her illustrious career, she has mesmerized audiences and critics with her performances on stage, television, in concert and recordings. Her film credits include well-known titles Pennies From Heaven, Annie and The Jerk to name a few. Peters made her Broadway debut in 1967 and went on to star in a number of smash hit productions becoming one of the most sought-after stars in musical theatre. This will be a rare opportunity for audiences to see one of the finest Cabaret stars direct from New York.

What's unique about this event, is that when David Campbell was made the new artistic director, Peters was his first choice on which to launch his new role. He's thrilled to have gotten her to agree to come over to his native Adelaide and the performance is going to be filmed for both television and DVD for Australia's FOXTEL Network.  The concert is being directed by her now-longtime collaborator, Richard Jay-Alexander and will be conducted by another longtime collaborator, Marvin Laird

David Campbell has continually been described as a world-class performer since he first burst onto the New York cabaret scene over a decade ago. Since then he has continued to go from strength to strength internationally and in Australia having had platinum sales for hisSwing Sessions albums and Good Lovin. David has also starred in a number of stage roles includingJohnny O'Keefe in the record breaking rock n'roll musical Shout!,winning top musical honours at the 2006 Helpmann Awards as Best Male Actor in a Musical for his performance in Sunset Boulevardand won acclaim from Sondheim himself for his performance of Bobby in a Sydney production of Company.

The festival will open with the Variety Gala Performance on Friday 5 June, at 7.30pm in the Festival Theatre. Hosted by David Campbell the Gala Performance offers a diverse sample of the 2009 Festival program featuring local and international stars, with the full line-up revealed on the night! This gala is for one night only, nowhere else in the world will you see an array of Cabaret artists performing in a gala of stunning proportions, with tickets starting from only $25.00.

Cabaret as an artform has evolved over the years from the Moulin Rouge days in Paris, to the English music halls and the New York cabaret clubs. And so it continues, once a year in the city of Adelaide where Cabaret is celebrated, offering audiences the chance to experience small intimate performances as well as main stage extravaganzas.

In America, 'cabaret' is a misnomer compared to the way that Australian's interpret the word, and Peters will be performing with a full 28-piece orchestra. No news of what songs will be in the program for these shows, but since it's been 12 years since her last television special, we can expect that the show will be similar to the knockout shows that she's been giving across America over recent months. Peters also appeared recently at the Kennedy Center for a Birthday tribute to Ted Kennedy where she knocked it out of the ballpark singing Rodgers and Hammerstein's "There is Nothing Like a Dame" in her own inimitable style. The evening featured other highlights including Colm Wilkinson performing 'Sweet Rosie O'Grady', Brian Stokes Mitchell singing 'The Impossible Dream' and more, with President Obama and his wife Michelle in the audience.

Adelaide Cabaret Festival is the best and most comprehensive Cabaret festival in the world and has attracted more than 340,000 attendances and hundreds of sold out performances during its eight years. With its long-term philosophy of offering the best local and international artists at very accessible ticket prices, patrons can see a variety of performers including world class entertainers and also have the opportunity to take a chance, be adventurous and explore something new to the Cabaret scene.

The festival also has a reputation for discovering new talent and works in development. Just last year Shane Warne The Musical had its first airings at the festival and has since received much media and public attention. So come and be the first to witness a star in the making!

This year's full program will be announced at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival Launch on April 8 at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

David Campbell performed with his father Jimmy Barnes at Carnegie Hall on January 20, 2009 as part of the G'Day USA: Australia Week 2009.  David sang "Baby Now that I've Found You".  David sang "Your Nothing Without Me" with Simon Burke.   David sang"You've Lost That Loving Feeling" with Jimmy Barnes and "Quiet Please, There's a Lady Onstage" in a finale medley along with others such as Amanda Harrison and Olivia Newton-John.  David sounded excellent!

Jimmy's busy brood

From: Sunday Herald Sun
January 25, 2009

JIMMY Barnes lives life at a cracking pace, but he never fails to put his children first, writes Kate Mickan.

WHAT was supposed to be a quiet year of recovery for Jimmy Barnes has turned into the busiest of his life.

``It was meant to be quiet because of the heart surgery last year, but that didn't happen,'' he says with a laugh.

G'Day USA: Australia Week brought "Australia Plays Broadway" to Carnegie Hall Tuesday evening, Inauguration Day, in a program dedicated to celebrating our new President by presenting a variety of Australian artists. The evening's host Simon Burke said it was the largest country promotion in the world, having travelled to Los Angeles, San Francisco and now New York to celebrate our two countries' similarities and connection through Hollywood and Broadway.

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra under conductor Arvo Volmer opened with an orchestral fanfare "V" by Carl Vine, a stark modern piece that included expansive brass and percussion flourishes by this avant garde experimental composer whose work has been described as "radically tonal." Amanda Harrison, currently starring as Elphaba in the Australian premiere of Stephen Schwartz's "Wicked" followed by singing "The Wizard and I" from that Broadway show. She was okay. She fared better later in the evening singing in a Peter Allen medley (she has also played Liza Minnelli in "The Boy from Oz").

Some of the other performers included Indigenous community performers like Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu from the Gumatj clan who played guitar and sang in his own language with orchestral backing, and William Barton who played a tribal instrument called the didgeridoo which had the drone of a cello when blown, but was also hit with a stick for rhythm. He was also accompanied by timpani and eventually the full orchestra. It was probably the first time a didgeridoo playing performance received such a welcoming ovation from an appreciative audience. Pianist Simon Tedeschi was introduced by Mr. Burke as having played for several heads of state internationally, including he said ex-President Bush. Burke said that sounded so good, he wanted to say it again: ex-President Bush! The audience erupted in wild applause. Tedeschi performed a cake walk by Percy Grainger called "In Dahomey" that was very well played.

Cabaret and theatre star David Campbell was introduced as a "roof raiser" by Burke, but his performance of "Baby Now That I've Found You" (Tony Macaulay/John Macleeod) didn't quite fit that description, even though it was well sung amongst a throng of children from The Qantas Choir. The choir had earlier sung as the von Trapp Family singers as Burke sang "The Sound of Music." (His lame joke about the choir putting the "-tralia" in Austria went over like a lead balloon). Campbell then joined Burke in "You're Nothing Without Me" from "City of Angels" (Coleman/Zippel) with mostly new and topical referenced lyrics like Burke calling Campbell a "cheesy retro swinger" while Campbell referred to Burke as that "Edelweiss-y singer." However, they put the punch into it and sold it as the musical theatre stars they are.

One of the big draws of the evening for some was the appearance of Jimmy Barnes, the gravelly voiced rocker affectionately known as "Barnesy" who has become the elder statesman of Australian rock 'n' roll. He didn't disappoint as he plowed through "I'm Still On Your Side" (Vallance/Barnes/Cain) with his back-up singing trio and band. However, it was when he joined up with his son Campbell for "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling) (P.Spector/B.Mann/C.Weil) that they finally raised the roof. Their performance has been captured on Campbell's CD "Good Lovin'" which remains one of the Top Ten discs in Australia since its release late last year.

Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" was narrated by "the first lady of Australian theatre" Robyn Nevin in a very moving salute to our president. The back stage wall of Carnegie had a projection of a stately portrait of Lincoln which, at the very end, accompanied by the final chords of the orchestra, morphed into the rest of the presidents who followed Lincoln until at the end there appeared President Barack Obama! The audience again erupted into wild applause and cheers.  It was not unlike this stunning piece played with Ravel's Bolero:  http://www.flixxy.com/presidents-morphing.htm

Aboriginal singer Ursula Yovich from the mystical ancient lands of Australia's remote North appears as Daisy in Baz Luhrmann's "Australia" film, and here she was given the unbelievable task of singing a salute to Judy Garland's Carnegie appearance by singing "Over the Rainbow." She passed the test in a very fine arrangement led by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Mr. Volmer.  The evening ended with a medley of songs by one of Australia's most well known entertainers Peter Allen. Joining the soloists was superstar Olivia Newton-John, one of the most popular female vocalists (over 100 million albums sold) who co-starred with John Travolta in "Grease," the most successful movie musical in history (according to the program notes). Naturally, she sang her hit "I Honestly Love You" sounding as young as when she first recorded it those many years ago. In the Allen medley, Burke sang "Once Before I Go," Harrison joined him on "Arthur's Theme," Campbell sang the hand-clapping chorus of "Quiet Please, There's a Lady On Stage," and the entire company joined in for what has become the country's national anthem "I Still Call Australia Home."

How funny!!!!!

Robyn Nevin did not give the Gettysburg Address at Carnegie Hall last night!!!!!  She narrated Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait with the Adelaide Orchestra, and she did a wonderful job. Of course, also wonderful was our own David along with his father. I'll prepare a report later on and post it. It was quite a night!

This week's ARIA REPORT shows GOOD LOVIN' as having sold enough
copies to receive a platinum accreditation. This equals the two
SWING SESSIONS albums which also went platinum.

The album reaches the Top 10 albums in CDs sold, and #12 in the
overall album chart (ie CDs plus downloads), its highest placing so
far. It has hovered at #15 for weeks up to now.

On the state charts it is #9 (up 4 places) in NSW; #13 (no move) in
Victoria; #11 (up 3 places) in Qld; #9 (up 4 places in Sth Australia)
and #14 (up 1 place) in West Australia.

It is #3 album by an Australian artist (up from #5 where it has been
for awhile)- it is bettered by AC/DC's "Black Ice" and the soundtrack
from television hit series "Packed To the Rafters".

I see too that Hamish & Andy's hilarious UNESSENTIAL LISTENING, also
platinum and a long runner in the top 10 since it was released, is
still at #15 (#14 in physical CDs) and is a good listen if you enjoy
down to earth, sometimes crude, humour from two radio superstars.

Best wishes to all for a 2009 that's better than most are predicting.

Les wanted me to advise you all about Nick Christo's last performance in New York City.  As you know Les Solomon first brought David Campbell to the NYC cabarets:
NICK CHRISTO SMASH OPENING!!!!

"This is rare even in Manhattan" said Sidney Myer after Nick Christo's
wonderful opening night of his Frances Faye show last night. This mix of
theatre, cabaret and song as a homage to the late great saloon singer had the
opening night crowd buzzing whether  they were familiar with Frances or not  .
Nick Christo is a vitally talented and exciting young actor and as he takes on
the double role of MC and Frances he pulls all sorts of actors tricks as he
gives the crowd a fabulous night of entertainment with his small and wild
little band.

There is only one more performance left on Thursday at 8 30pm at Dont Tell
Mamas, no doubt Nick will be back at some stage but he sets forth for
Australia again at the end of the weekend. A lot of people are hearing about
the show and saying they are coming, but we want to emphasise people to book.
So if you are planning not to miss this exciting new show, please ring Mammas
today and book, the number is 212 757 0788. Be assured this is one of those
special nights.

Many Thanks,

Les Solomon

I would drop everything in a New York minute, if I could.  I recall this happened when David performed at Joe's Pub in January and I couldn't get away.  Dang job.  Why must we work, anyway, I ask you.  (grumbling as I type this...)    I am in a mandatory overtime mode at work, and things won't ease up for a bit.

My one glimpse of hope, my one ray of sunshine, is that David, while he and the new missus are in the city, will be scouting around for future NYC gigs!

At any rate, whoever does see him, I give my permission to give him an extra hug from Maine.

And I didn't know Kath Sharpham did a cabaret showcase.  Must hear more...

Hi Jay, you really should drop everything to get to NYC for David's
show. We saw David just before Christmas at Bar Me when we there to
provide support for list member Kath Sharpham in her cabaret showcase
performance. David said he will be doing more songs in his segment
this year including the duet with Jimmy Barnes. They duetted on
"You'll Never Walk Alone" in CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT on Christmas Eve
and it was quite magnificent.

It's good to see Tim Draxl going back into cabaret after so long. He
last did a cabaret show late in 2005 in Sydney.

A happy new year to all on the list.

GOOD LOVIN'
David Campbell
(Columbia) [4.5 stars out of 5]

Amid the seasonal flood of compilations and themed CDs, David
Campbell's Good Lovin' is a standout. I'm usually wary of covers,
but this tribute to Campbell's (and just about everyone's)
favourite '60s blue-eyed soul songs works on all counts. Campbell,
fresh from his Swing series of albums and tours has revved up the
tempo and chosen upbeat material with appeal across the generations.
His voice is perfectly suited to this genre, with assured delivery
and an obvious affection for the songs. The horn, orchestral and
vocal arrangements by (Swing producer) Chong Lim echo – but not
slavishly – the originals. And their choice of Anglo-US material is
spot-on, from the Righteous Brothers' You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'
(a lusty duet with dad Jimmy Barnes) and the Young Rascals Good
Lovin' to Van Morrison's Jackie Wilson Said and the Spencer Davis
Group's Keep On Running. Listen out for the 'radio channel' segue,
from Aaron Neville's Tell It Like It Is to a sparkling Manhattan
Transfer-inspired, multi-tracked vocal harmonisation of Unit4+2's
Girl From New York City. It's all great fun and perfect Christmas
party material. A national tour is scheduled next autumn (including
March 25 at Melbourne's Hamer Hall).

AND - the album rises from #18 to #15 this week on the ARIA Top 100
albums chart.
