The September number of AUSTRALIAN GORMET TRAVELLER contains an
article about David Campbell having a discussion over lunch with Leo
Schofield, a well known food critic and arts festival organiser in
Australia. I have attached a scan of the piece.

It's easy to overlook DVDs with the emphasis on chart placings for CDs and
singles. However, the GOOD LOVIN' DVD debuted 2 weeks back on the Australian
Aria DVD chart at #1. It fell to #2 last week, The Priests being #1. This week
Andre Rieux returns to #1 with his long running Andrew Rieu in Australia DVD.
David has remained solidly at #2 and the DVD has gone platinum.

Great work, David.

Good to hear from you and thanks for clarifying that.  I was just echoing what I heard, so glad to know.  And sorry your friend didn't get to enjoy Robbie...

I did play my dvd on my computer, so now I will try my dvd player!

Thanks, Adam, for the site info for the company that has free postage.  Choices, choices!

Well, that's not exactly true. I once gifted a friend a Robbie
Williams DVD that turned out to be for regions 2-6. grr!

But anyway, you also need to be mindful if your DVD player can handle
PAL formatted DVDs - which is different than regions but can trip you
up all the same. Computer DVD drives should have no problems with PAL,
though.

I confess I haven't been the best fan in recent years - I only just
got around to playing the first Swing CD earlier this week! But I
caught David on Pam Ann a few weeks ago (via the magic of the
internet) and he looked lovely. Clearly marriage suits him. :-)

Hi all,

I personally wouldn't have made the assumption that all music DVDs are region free but I am also happy to be educated to the fact!

Here is another option for David's DVD purchase for international fans. DELIVERY IS FREE! If you are on their email list, you quite often receive discount vouchers too.

CD WOW:
http://www.cdwow.com.au/DVD/GOOD-LOVIN-LIVE/product/view/7218737

This is the Aussie version of their website, in the top right you can see a list of local versions of the website for different countries. Prices (and product listings) vary between the websites, so with your currency converter website handy check to see which one is the cheapest!

For example here is the US version:

It is also worth putting DAVID CAMPBELL in their search engine in case you don't have some of the recent CDs, but be careful as it finds some other "DAVID CAMPBELL" matches that aren't actually our boy!!

Happy shopping.

Hi everyone,

I have been asked by some American listers how to get David's new DVD that is an All Region disk and plays on our DVD players.  (I was told by an Englishman that ALL music DVDs are All Region, which I did not know!  So, sorry if I am redundant.)

My recollection from the years I have been on this list is that Shane Hewitt's Middle 8 Music is a very reliable source to get David's recordings at any time, and especially his specfically Australian recordings.

According to the website, it seems to be fair with postage and prices, and, unless anyone posts differently, I say order from Shane!

http://www.middle8.com/mem/product.asp?pID=4014&cID=387&scID=

If you have any questions before ordering, just inquire, but from the years I have been on this list, I would recommend this source to order.

best,
Jay in Maine

I was fortunate to be able to see the new GOOD LOVIN' show twice in just over a
week, the premiere in Sydney and a smoother show in Canberra eight days later.

The show opens with a punch from the drum and bass heavy "1-2-3" and moves into
"Jackie Wilson Said", the increasingly pleasing "Baby, Now That I've Found You"
and the jazzy but amusingly cheesy "Yeh Yeh". In Sydney Bob Downe (aka Mark
Trevorrow) joined David on stage at the State Theatre to add to the kitsch value
of this song. They brought the house down.

The show then slows for a brilliant version of "You've Lost That Lovin'
Feelin'". Back up singers Mahalia Barnes and Juanita Tippins sopport David
brilliantly in this song. And the band is terrific.

The band deserves a word. It's a different line-up from the Swing Sessions
team, though Joe Acaria (musical director, drums) stays. Marty Hsiley,
apparently a Canberra boy, performs consistently impressively on lead guitar.
Brass and woodwind are Steve Fitzmaurice, Msrk Taylor and another player not
billed. Piano is Lindsay Page and, for the rockier work, Nik Pringadi who
otherwise is on electric keyboards. Ben Cripps plays awesome bass. Efforts
have been made to give the band more prominence this time around. There is an
epic version of "Lazy River" in which a duel takes place between David and the
brass with the brass players moving around the stage in a stylised chase
routine. It works really well.

"Lovin' Feelin'" was followed by "How Can I Be Sure" (with some fine flute).
The pace picked up with a scorcher in "Keep On Running".

Then a delightful surprise when David sang "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" accompanied
only by Lindsay Page at the piano. Introduced as a song they couldn't fit on
the CD, it seemed a loss that such a fine performance of so great a song missed
the cut. However, it will be on the DVD released on 24 April and I guess
appears on the download of the Sydney show available on the bandit.fm website.
This performance was reminiscent of David's job on "Cry" and "Save The Last
Dance For Me" on the SHOUT! cast recording.

There then followed the Swing Sessions segment made up of "Perhaps, Perhaps,
Perhaps", "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You", "Up A Lazy River" and the
singalong "Can't Take My Eyes Off You". Revisiting this material was like
meeting old friends. The different band did a great job with this material.

After an intermission the second half opened with David doing "Sing! (And Tell
the Blues So Long)" from SHOUT! accompanied only by himself on guitar. The band
then joined David down stage seated in a semi-circle for a very pleasing soft
rock group of songs - like the jam session in the ELVIS 1968 COMEBACK SPECIAL or
any of a number of Chris Isaak performances. The songs were "Runaround Sue"
(which well deserves a recording), "Good Lovin'" and "She's My Baby".

Back in full stage mode we then had "Mr Bojangles", "You've Made Me So Very
Happy" and "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody". The rock tempo took over with
"Suspicious Minds" and a fantastic "Devil In A Blue Dress" (with great work from
Mahalia and Juanita), "What'd I Say?" and a "Shout!" encore.

The show is a worthy development from last year's Swing Sessions shows. More
thought and work has gone into the look and staging of this show without the
loss of fun. The audiences in both Sydney and Melbourne were demonstrative in
the extreme and, as with 2008, all age groups were well represented.

They say now in introducing David on television shows that he's the hardest
working performer in Australia and often he's introduced as "Mr Showbusiness".
He certainly gives his all and the audience really appreciates it. It's
salutary to think how far David has come since some of the lean times a decade
or so ago and in the few years after SHOUT!

This rundown has been delayed because I've been working hard in the last few
weeks with lots of weekends away from home.

BWW's First Look at the Australia Concert Poster for Bernadette Peters' Adelaide Cabaret Festival Performances
Back to the Article

by BWW News Desk

Adelaide, Australia-

Now in its ninth year, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival (Adelaide Festival Centre) promises to dazzle audiences when it opens on 5 June, 2009 under the new Artistic Directorship of Adelaide born entertainer David Campbell. Campbell will oversee the festival over the next three years.

Appearing in her only Australian performances, musical theatre icon Bernadette Peters will headline the festival, performing in the Festival Theatre on 6 and 7 June.

Bernadette Peters is among the crème de la crème of live stage performers and a multiple Tony Award-winning star. Throughout her illustrious career, she has mesmerized audiences and critics with her performances on stage, television, in concert and recordings. Her film credits include well-known titles Pennies From Heaven, Annie and The Jerk to name a few. Peters made her Broadway debut in 1967 and went on to star in a number of smash hit productions becoming one of the most sought-after stars in musical theatre. This will be a rare opportunity for audiences to see one of the finest Cabaret stars direct from New York.

What's unique about this event, is that when David Campbell was made the new artistic director, Peters was his first choice on which to launch his new role. He's thrilled to have gotten her to agree to come over to his native Adelaide and the performance is going to be filmed for both television and DVD for Australia's FOXTEL Network.  The concert is being directed by her now-longtime collaborator, Richard Jay-Alexander and will be conducted by another longtime collaborator, Marvin Laird

David Campbell has continually been described as a world-class performer since he first burst onto the New York cabaret scene over a decade ago. Since then he has continued to go from strength to strength internationally and in Australia having had platinum sales for hisSwing Sessions albums and Good Lovin. David has also starred in a number of stage roles includingJohnny O'Keefe in the record breaking rock n'roll musical Shout!,winning top musical honours at the 2006 Helpmann Awards as Best Male Actor in a Musical for his performance in Sunset Boulevardand won acclaim from Sondheim himself for his performance of Bobby in a Sydney production of Company.

The festival will open with the Variety Gala Performance on Friday 5 June, at 7.30pm in the Festival Theatre. Hosted by David Campbell the Gala Performance offers a diverse sample of the 2009 Festival program featuring local and international stars, with the full line-up revealed on the night! This gala is for one night only, nowhere else in the world will you see an array of Cabaret artists performing in a gala of stunning proportions, with tickets starting from only $25.00.

Cabaret as an artform has evolved over the years from the Moulin Rouge days in Paris, to the English music halls and the New York cabaret clubs. And so it continues, once a year in the city of Adelaide where Cabaret is celebrated, offering audiences the chance to experience small intimate performances as well as main stage extravaganzas.

In America, 'cabaret' is a misnomer compared to the way that Australian's interpret the word, and Peters will be performing with a full 28-piece orchestra. No news of what songs will be in the program for these shows, but since it's been 12 years since her last television special, we can expect that the show will be similar to the knockout shows that she's been giving across America over recent months. Peters also appeared recently at the Kennedy Center for a Birthday tribute to Ted Kennedy where she knocked it out of the ballpark singing Rodgers and Hammerstein's "There is Nothing Like a Dame" in her own inimitable style. The evening featured other highlights including Colm Wilkinson performing 'Sweet Rosie O'Grady', Brian Stokes Mitchell singing 'The Impossible Dream' and more, with President Obama and his wife Michelle in the audience.

Adelaide Cabaret Festival is the best and most comprehensive Cabaret festival in the world and has attracted more than 340,000 attendances and hundreds of sold out performances during its eight years. With its long-term philosophy of offering the best local and international artists at very accessible ticket prices, patrons can see a variety of performers including world class entertainers and also have the opportunity to take a chance, be adventurous and explore something new to the Cabaret scene.

The festival also has a reputation for discovering new talent and works in development. Just last year Shane Warne The Musical had its first airings at the festival and has since received much media and public attention. So come and be the first to witness a star in the making!

This year's full program will be announced at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival Launch on April 8 at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
