"merry andrew" (how many times have i said this but it's the danny kaye
movie i want the most that i don't have yet)
Dear Elizabeth,
I put off answering your query as long as I can, I didn't really
want to get involved making copies of movies that aren't available
commercially, but I understand how badly you want Merry Andrew. Court
Jester and Merry Andrew were the first Danny Kaye movies I saw when I was
about 9, and I have been in love with him ever since (I'm now 55).... I have
begged and pleaded for SOMEONE to come out with MA for YEARS, no answer.
I've spent years getting this movies together, but worth it! I think now
it is important to keep Danny's legacy alive.
In July of 2004, Turner Classic Movies showed "Merry Andrew" because
it was Pier Angeli's birthday. I recorded it directly to DVD ( I have a
great DVD recorder). It is the widescreen version, with an intro about the
movie. (Pier Angeli is mentioned first, but then a good bit of info on the
movie.) I would rate the quality of the recording between 9 - 91/2 out of
10. I have played it on several different recorders I have, including my
computer DVD player, and all play great. I think the recording can be
played in any country, but I'm not sure outside of US and Canada.
I'm not in the business of selling DVD's, but I have decided to make
available a few that I have of Danny Kaye that are not available anywhere
else. Some I have recorded, some I have bought from others who have also
made copies like I do. I don't copy DVD's that I have that are available
commercially. I will make you a copy and send it to you for $10. Please
include postage of $1.50, or if you want, $3.75 to send it 2 day priority.
If you want more than 1 movie, I will combine shipping. I think 5 or 6
movies can be mailed for the one priority rate. That should get them
anywhere in the US. Please e-mail me privately so that I can give you my
address, and I can get yours. By the time I make the copy, and the artwork
for the case and mail it, I'm not making any money on it, but I'll be happy
to share the movies I have that are not available commercially. If any of
these do become available, or are reissued, I will stop making copies of
them to share.
I will copy it onto a high-quality DVD - I only use Memorex that have dual
layers. I don't put any label on them, as research has shown that the
sticky glue can erode some dvds and erase chunks of information on the disk.
When labels are deemed to be safe, I will start using them. I use only pens
that are alcohol free ink intended to write on Dvds and CDs. I will put them
in a slimline DVD case, and make a cover by finding internet pictures of the
movie, with the title on the spine.
I also have "On the Riviera" - full screen. Movie made in 1951, and
widescreen didn't come out until 1953, "On the Double" - 1961, widescreen,
"UP in Arms", "The Kid from Brooklyn, both full screen. All are at least a
9 or better quality, at least on all the DVD players I have tried them on.
I also have a commercial DVD of "A Song is Born" from efilmic that I cannot
find available anywhere anymore. I will make copies of this until it comes
back commercially, then I will stop making copies of it.
The following titles are available from www.efilmic.com
<http://www.efilmic.com/> , All DVDs:
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Wonder Man, both on sale for $9.99.
This company is in Taiwan, and I have been buying rare movies from them for
years. They usually ship out within 24-48 hours of your order. Both of
these movies are digitally remastered and in plastic cases with great art.
I have no affiliation with them, just a satisfied customer. This is where I
got "A Song is Born", but doesn't seem to be available right now. This site
is worth checking out for other old, hard to find movies.
At www.bestprices.com <http://www.bestprices.com/> , All DVDs, good prices
on:
Hans Christian Anderson Here Comes
Peter Cottontail
Pinocchio (with Sandy Duncan) Best of Danny
Kaye, The Television Years
Court Jester Skokie
The Emperor's New Clothes
The Five Pennies
Inspector General
Best way to find the movies is to do a Google Search. You'll get lots of
hits, but sometimes you can find a gem, even at E-bay.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you are interested.
