Dear All
I am doing a little research into societies, websites, clubs, etc that are
concerned with silent movies, or include silents in their remit. This is so as
to be prepared for places to advertise at for a likely forthcoming silent movie
screening with live theatre organ accompaniment.
This event is in the planning stage at present but would be at the wonderful
Broadway Theatre Catford (formerly called Lewisham Town Hall Theatre) and would
feature the great Donald MacKenzie at the restored Compton theatre organ.
We are thinking in terms of a Buster Keaton special event - a Keaton short in
the first half with a couple of organ solo spots and then something like
Sherlock Jnr, a wonderful Keaton classic of 44 minutes duration, for the second
half.
When it is finalized, I want to advertise the event in film enthusiast circles
at least as much as in organ circles.
Any suggestions welcome.

There have been several requests on this forum [and elsewhere] for the

watchable. It's 140Mb. There were some other items on the tape -
'Romance of Odeon' a 2½min item from 1938 about the construction of
ODEON cinemas [45Mb]; 'We Come Along on Saturday Morning' the ODEON Boys

and the competition at Odeon Cinemas in the 1950s [70Mb]. You can

Hi, there was a short item on the BBC TV London news on Tuesday about the
ex-Granada, Walthamstow:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8091581.stm
Unfortunately, the names of the people interviewed have been transposed! I
wish they would stop calling the building the "former EMD"- a name it only
carried for a very short time!!
Best, Jeremy
This is great and welcome news after what seems to have been a never ending
wait. Let's hope Reel have done this great building justice, however (and not
to sound too negative) I shall leave my final verdict upon personal inspection
as I've been disappointed with Reel's refurbishments of other sites in the past.
Is anyone aware of any planning applications that they have submitted regarding
the York refurbishment? This would indicate the level of works being carried
out and the alternations (if any) they are making or planning to make in the
future.

Like Chester the York Odeon relied on the local Students for a lot of its custom.
but the summer recess is just begining.
Talking of Chester "no one is" its seems to be a stand off at the moment

Reel cinemas have announced that they hope to reopen the former Odeon cinema in Blossom Street on Friday 19th June with a showing of the summer blockbuster Transformers 2 in the largest auditorium.
Work on the initial refurbishment is still continuing with new screens being installed this week. A new concessions and ticket kiosk have been created and painting and plastering has been carried out.
I for one can't wait to see what's been done so far in bringing this deco lady back to life.
It is great news - I relieved there in the 60's when the very long serving manager was George Shepherd - he had a thing about the shops - they had to be as immaculate as his cinema and he used to tell me to keep an eye on them to watch for litter and a clean front window and a good window display!! hope Reel Cinemas feel the same!!
May its profits be better than planned, if they are, it will be around for another 65 years plus!

By noise I mean levels in line with modern music venues, which I'm afraid are
rather extreme. Just being near such a building is not usually an issue, but if
your apartment is built into/onto one then the bass vibrations at least are
bound to penetrate your entire residence. Most people would complain about such
a thing, or not buy one in the first place if they thought the auditorium could
ever be used as a music venue.
However without having the option to use an auditorium as a live performance
venue the scope for its use is pretty limited to either a cinema (which we all
know is not likely to be self-sustaining for a large single auditorium), a
church or possibly a theatre, although cinemas usually didn't have full
fly-towers. The only other options are things like community exhibition space or
a conference venue, provided noise levels are kept low.
These buildings were built as places of entertainment, and that's what they are
best suited as - not converted to flats.

There was talk of building a hotel on top of the Forum/ABC in Liverpool.
That was the latest scheme, although a proposal a few years ago to punch a couple of windows in the wall was turned down. That was a scheme for a night club.

Out of interest (and concern!) I just phoned the agents for the Lumiere Apartments (aka Granada Clapham Junct) and asked about progress and about what the auditorium is to be used for.
I was told that the first flats will be ready in November and that the ground floor around the auditorium will be for commercial use and the auditorium itself is going to be used by a church.
My big concern with all this, and other similar projects where parts of an old cinema are used for residential purposes, is that the auditorium can never again be used for live performances unless they are either only quiet ones or there is a huge amount spent on acoustic insulation. Neither option is realistic I feel though.
This is my BIG concern with the State Grays - the owners of that want to build flats in/on it and the council seem amenable to the idea.
Dear All
Out of interest (and concern!) I just phoned the agents for the Lumiere

I was told that the first flats will be ready in November and that the ground

This is my BIG concern with the State Grays - the owners of that want to build

Hi all,
As Jeremy has mentioned, the Glasgow Coliseum has indeed been ravaged by a
serious fire. Gordon and I managed to carry out a slightly unofficial inspection
a few years ago, exploiting a frequent access opportunity that sadly appears to
have been its downfall.
Having been rebuilt three times internally over its lifetime, there was indeed
little left of the original enormous interior with twin balconies, however the
corner tower with revolving sign and the main entrance facade were both of a
decent enough quality and eminently salvageable in any redevelopment, the latter
having been under corrugated metal cladding since its Cinerama days. Sadly, the
damage looks to have been fairly extensive - as well as losing the entire roof,
the top of the tower and most of the wallhead appear to have suffered terminal
damage. The metal cladding is also badly burnt, suggesting the main facade could
be badly damaged underneath too. I'll be very surprised given Glasgow's record
for taking the easy option of demolition over repair if anything is left of the
old theatre in a few weeks time.
Some photos of the damage are available on this internet forum here - the ones
posted under the name gap74 are mine, and can be used in the Bulletin if you're
reading, Harry!

Hi All, you may be interested that, as part of Mayor of London's Story of

Hi All, according to a BBC News report, fire has wrecked the former ABC
Coliseum, Glasgow.:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/8066723.stm
This was built by Frank Matcham as a live theatre, later converted to a
cinema which was the main showcase for Cinerama in Scotland. Later a Bingo
hall, but closed and derelict since 2003. The CTA visited many years ago I
recall, and I don't remember that there were many original features to see
inside the building.
Best , Jeremy B
Thanks for promoting that Jeremy. Over £1200 raised so far, but a long way to
go.

Social Realism Drama Back In Cinemas- Re-released by Park Circus and
digitally restored and remastered, This Sporting Life stars Richard
Harris, more recently seen as Professor Albus Dumbledore in the first
two Harry Potter films, and Rachel Roberts, who also appeared in
Lindsay Anderson’s O Lucky Man! and Karel Reisz’s Saturday Night and

Hi All
You probably recall that the Compton organ which lived in the Royal/ABC
Plymouth was removed a couple of years back, and it is planned to re-install
it in Blackheath Halls, London. Funds are needed to make this installation
happen, and a new scheme of "sponsor a pipe" has been started by Peter
Hammond, the mastermind of the scheme. Website here:
