Dear All

I am doing a little research into societies, websites, clubs, etc that are
concerned with silent movies, or include silents in their remit. This is so as
to be prepared for places to advertise at for a likely forthcoming silent movie
screening with live theatre organ accompaniment.

This event is in the planning stage at present but would be at the wonderful
Broadway Theatre Catford (formerly called Lewisham Town Hall Theatre) and would
feature the great Donald MacKenzie at the restored Compton theatre organ.

We are thinking in terms of a Buster Keaton special event - a Keaton short in
the first half with a couple of organ solo spots and then something like
Sherlock Jnr, a wonderful Keaton classic of 44 minutes duration, for the second
half.

When it is finalized, I want to advertise the event in film enthusiast circles
at least as much as in organ circles.

Any suggestions welcome.

Peter

There have been several requests on this forum [and elsewhere] for the
Look at Life 'The Cinema Steps Out'. I have found a VHS copy and
transferred it to video. The quality isn't top notch but it's perfectly
watchable. It's 140Mb. There were some other items on the tape -
'Romance of Odeon' a 2½min item from 1938 about the construction of
ODEON cinemas [45Mb]; 'We Come Along on Saturday Morning' the ODEON Boys
& Girls Club song [36Mb]; the item about Art Pickles the YoYo champion
and the competition at Odeon Cinemas in the 1950s [70Mb]. You can
download them all in mp4 format from http://rapidshare.com/users/OU4XFU
along with some otther stuff I have put there previously. I will print
this link in the forthcoming Bulletin.

Lovefilm to sell? Netflix in the frame - It looks like Amazon, which now owns just under a third of Lovefilm in the UK (and merged it with its UK and German DVD rental businesses last year), and the remaining shareholders consisting of Arts Alliance Media, Index Ventures, Balderton Capital, DFJ Esprit and company management all want a “liquidity event”. In others words, they probably want to sell LoveFilm. It’s clear Netflix in the US would be a natural fit, as hinted in the FT.

happen in a vacuum there are underlying issues that helped drive this
agreement, among them the current state of the global economy. One thing
is certain: the competition in this business has heated up and the
Regal-Sony announcement has significantly raised the stakes in the
ongoing digital cinema roll out.

*Calling all digital projectionists…..
<http://www.madcornishprojectionist.co.uk/nourl.php>* - Calling all
digital projectionists….. Since the installation of digital projection
equipment many cinemas have been experimenting with various forms of
Alternative Content and what is now becoming known as Live Cinema,
generally using satellite feeds to provide the content. These systems
have so far been assembled on a rather ad-hoc basis, with varying
degrees of success and a frequently a fair bit of stress for the
projection teams. It has become obvious that there is a need to provide
common guidelines as to what equipment should be used and how it should
be put together, so as to enable projection teams to put on the best
possible digital show with the least possible hassle.

To help to establish such guidelines, the UK Digital TV Group has set up
a sub work group on Live Cinema, which is Chaired by Peter Wilson of
HDDC Ltd., who is a BKSTS member and well known to Cinema Technology
magazine readers. Work started in December 2008 to study live content
delivery to Cinemas, and the group is taking input from all parties,
including Producers, Distributors, Exhibitors, system Integrators,
Satellite service operators etc.

The output from the group will not be official standards (it is expected
that many existing technical standards for digital cinema will also
cover Alternative content and Live Cinema), but practical reference
documents providing recommended practices. The early meetings of the
group have had presentations from Odeon and Arts Alliance , from Arqiva
and the Audio study group, and the first study group that was set up is
looking at audio for Live Cinema. New study groups have been established
for Ingest & Communications, led by Arqiva, and for Hardware
Integration, led by Arts Alliance.

Since projectionists have an absolutely key role to play in Live Cinema,
their practical experiences will be extremely valuable to the study
group, so Peter Wilson is inviting all projectionists with some
experience of digital projection and alternative content to let him know
of their most important concerns regarding such shows. It would be
helpful to have details of any problems that have been encountered
during ‘Live’ and ‘Alternative Content’ performances, of the possible
reasons for these, and of the ways in which they were overcome. Any
suggestions for improving current practices or introducing new ways of
working that might be useful to others in the business will be
gratefully received and acknowledged.

Hi, there was a short item on the BBC TV London news on Tuesday about the
ex-Granada, Walthamstow:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8091581.stm

Unfortunately, the names of the people interviewed have been transposed! I
wish they would stop calling the building the "former EMD"- a name it only
carried for a very short time!!

This is great and welcome news after what seems to have been a never ending
wait. Let's hope Reel have done this great building justice, however (and not
to sound too negative) I shall leave my final verdict upon personal inspection
as I've been disappointed with Reel's refurbishments of other sites in the past.
Is anyone aware of any planning applications that they have submitted regarding
the York refurbishment? This would indicate the level of works being carried
out and the alternations (if any) they are making or planning to make in the
future.

Reel cinemas have announced that they hope to reopen the former Odeon cinema in Blossom Street on Friday 19th June with a showing of the summer blockbuster Transformers 2 in the largest auditorium.

Work on the initial refurbishment is still continuing with new screens being installed this week. A new concessions and ticket kiosk have been created and painting and plastering has been carried out.

It is great news - I relieved there in the 60's when the very long serving manager was George Shepherd - he had a thing about the shops - they had to be as immaculate as his cinema and he used to tell me to keep an eye on them to watch for litter and a clean front window and a good window display!! hope Reel Cinemas feel the same!!
May its profits be better than planned, if they are, it will be around for another 65 years plus!
Do please give us an update after you visit.
Best wishes to you and all

By noise I mean levels in line with modern music venues, which I'm afraid are
rather extreme. Just being near such a building is not usually an issue, but if
your apartment is built into/onto one then the bass vibrations at least are
bound to penetrate your entire residence. Most people would complain about such
a thing, or not buy one in the first place if they thought the auditorium could
ever be used as a music venue.

However without having the option to use an auditorium as a live performance
venue the scope for its use is pretty limited to either a cinema (which we all
know is not likely to be self-sustaining for a large single auditorium), a
church or possibly a theatre, although cinemas usually didn't have full
fly-towers. The only other options are things like community exhibition space or
a conference venue, provided noise levels are kept low.

These buildings were built as places of entertainment, and that's what they are
best suited as - not converted to flats.

I was told that the first flats will be ready in November and that the ground

My big concern with all this, and other similar projects where parts of an old

Hi all,

As Jeremy has mentioned, the Glasgow Coliseum has indeed been ravaged by a
serious fire. Gordon and I managed to carry out a slightly unofficial inspection
a few years ago, exploiting a frequent access opportunity that sadly appears to
have been its downfall.

Having been rebuilt three times internally over its lifetime, there was indeed
little left of the original enormous interior with twin balconies, however the
corner tower with revolving sign and the main entrance facade were both of a
decent enough quality and eminently salvageable in any redevelopment, the latter
having been under corrugated metal cladding since its Cinerama days. Sadly, the
damage looks to have been fairly extensive - as well as losing the entire roof,
the top of the tower and most of the wallhead appear to have suffered terminal
damage. The metal cladding is also badly burnt, suggesting the main facade could
be badly damaged underneath too. I'll be very surprised given Glasgow's record
for taking the easy option of demolition over repair if anything is left of the
old theatre in a few weeks time.

Some photos of the damage are available on this internet forum here - the ones
posted under the name gap74 are mine, and can be used in the Bulletin if you're
reading, Harry!

Hi All, according to a BBC News report, fire has wrecked the former ABC
Coliseum, Glasgow.:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/8066723.stm

This was built by Frank Matcham as a live theatre, later converted to a
cinema which was the main showcase for Cinerama in Scotland. Later a Bingo
hall, but closed and derelict since 2003. The CTA visited many years ago I
recall, and I don't remember that there were many original features to see
inside the building.

Thanks for promoting that Jeremy. Over £1200 raised so far, but a long way to
go.

But for me, these occasional glitches and projectionist mistakes can be almost as enjoyable as the movie itself. Maybe its just me, because Ive been a projectionist, in addition to the many positions Ive held at movie theaters, but I think it has more to do with my appreciation for how strangely people act in times of incongruity.

Classic British Social Realism Drama Back In Cinemas - Re-released by Park Circus and digitally restored and remastered, This Sporting Life stars Richard Harris, more recently seen as Professor Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, and Rachel Roberts, who also appeared in Lindsay Anderson’s O Lucky Man! and Karel Reisz’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. In This Sporting Life, Richard Harris plays Frank, a miner who lodges with a widow (Rachel Roberts). His competitive nature and powerful physique mean that when he reads of the success and respect gained by the local rugby team, he decides to join and share in the glory. However, as Frank's career progresses, his brutality distances him from those around him, with devastating consequences.

Based on the novel by acclaimed writer and former Rugby player David Storey, who also wrote the script and appeared in a minor role in the film, This Sporting Life was the first feature by director Lindsay Anderson, a gifted reporter of everyday realities who previously worked as a documentary filmmaker and theatre stage director.

This Sporting Life united great talent from British theatre and film successfully, demonstrated by Richard Harris winning the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival and Rachel Roberts receving the Best British Actress trophy at the BAFTA Film Awards.

This Sporting Life will be opening from Friday 5 June at the ICA, London and selected cinemas, presented in a digital cinema version.
