Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a movie that could have easily been a very typical pirate movie, but has just enough twists and turns to make it really rather entertaining. As the trailer's show, there is a super natural element to the film. The sailors on the Black Pearl are cursed, and therefore take of the appearance of skeletons when shown in the moonlight. While the trailers seem to focus on this aspect of the movie, this is one of the weaker parts of the over all tale. There are many other much more interesting parts of this movie. The battles of man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. himself all make an appearance. These layers of the film are what make it truly enjoyable. It's an adventure tale at its finest. While the story is solid, the effects are a bit shaky. The ghostly, skeleton pirates are more funny than scary. It would be understandable to make them appear this way has this film been rated G, or even PG. By placing a PG-13 rating on it however, they are obviously trying to appeal to an older audience. The acting is somewhere between the script and the effects. There are some really good performances, then some rather mediocre ones. Johnny Depp gives one of his better performances as the tricky Jack Sparrow. Geffory Rush is also quite good as the evil captain of the Black Pearl, Barbossa. However, both Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are a bit weak in their leading roles.Overall, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a good movie. The script is perfect for this type of picture. While the effects aren't the best, they aren't so bad as to be distracting. If you're looking for a good time at the cinema, Pirates is the place to find it.
