Hello Everyone,
Just wanted all to know we celebrated Miss Veidts bithday this
weekend a bit late ( her birthday was August 10 ) at the Ritz Carlton
in New Orleans. She loved it,she said it reminded her of the Grand
Hotels her and her father stayed at in Vienna before the war.
In attendance were myself (James Henry) Robert Sowerwine, and Miss
Veidts attorney Crystal Craddock Posey along with her husband Anthony
Posey.Miss Veidt turned 77 this year and is really doing very well.

Hi, just wanted to remind everyone of Kino's upcoming DVD box set of German
expressionist films. The four films included are The Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari, Waxworks (making its debut on DVD), Nosferatu and The Golem. The
release date is September 24.

The box set is only on DVD but you can order each film separately on VHS.

More info at http://www.kino.com/video/videoframe.html.

While you're there, check out their page for the restored version of
Metropolis, which is supposed to be spectacular.

Here's some more to keep us talking...

Kino is releasing on Sept. 24 a DVD box set of German Horror Classics, all of
which can also be purchased separately. The four films included are
Nosferatu, The Golem, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Waxworks.

This is the first DVD release for Waxworks, and I am SOOO looking forward to
seeing it, because I've only seen this on a horribly blurry tape. It will
also be interesting to compare this version of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
with the one produced by David Shepard and released by Image.

Hi Paula,

WEll that new Connie book looks amazing...I never did get the other
book that came out on Connie's films a few years ago, who has that
one? That one just looked a little amateur to spend the money on -
I'm sure it was a good book for a list of his films but I want lots
of pretty pictures! Maybe I'll ask for this one for Christmas....

Yup, that is the last scene from Ich und die Kaiserin. Actually, that's not in
the film, it's the
kissy silhouette which is last shot in the film. Really cute film.

Woo-hoo! My German Horror Classics DVD box set just arrived, and I'm happy
to say that two of the box cover art illustrations are of Cesare carrying off
Jane. ;-) (Max Shreck as Nosferatu is the third illustration.)

Plan to watch Waxworks first...

Cover copy says these are the "restored authorized editions." AUTHORIZED by
who, I ask? ;) It's not like anyone who made these movies are around to
authorize... heck, they're all public domain! :)

It's HEEEEEEERRRRE.

Well, all you Connie fans will be drooling once you see this book. It's an
oversized (not quite coffee-table sized, though) hardback from McFarland
Press. Inside is a preface by John Soister, a Veidt biography by Pat Wilks
Battle, "A Word About Censorship" by Henry Nicolella, an afterward by Henry,
bibliography and index. And, of course, John's listing of each film, which
contains credits, lengthy synopses, quotes from reviews, and analysis
concerning the film's history, reception, and its place as a work of cinema.
There are also quotes from interviews with Veidt and others. Plus many black
and white photos -- many film stills, but also behind the scenes and candid
shots. John also mentions that Pat is still working on her Veidt biography,
so maybe we shall see that before much more passes.

Definitely a must-have for the Veidt aficionado.

I don't know if any of you are familiar with Vladek Sheybal - he
played Russian spies in many films and was Jinnah in the BBC mini-
series Mountbatten. Anyway, I was watching Ken Russell's Women in
Love last night and he's got quite a substantial role in that film.
Anyway I was really struck by how much he resembles Connie - his
eyes, his face and his voice.

Probably one of the few actors out there who has any resemblance
whatsoever to our Veidt. http://us.imdb.com/Name?Sheybal,+Vladek

Yes, there are, including some really wonderful posters from Connie's movies.
Of course there are also quite a few photos we have seen before, too. I'm
sure you all are going to enjoy this book. :) My *only* quibble would be
that the book is not printed on glossy paper (but that's McFarland for
you...) so the photo reproductions seem a little "soft." But really, I'm NOT
complaining. :) At least it's been properly typeset. Some McFarland titles
look like they've been reproduced from the author's typescript! ;-)

Finally watched my new Waxworks DVD. While a great, great improvement on
that horrible old VHS tape, it's not quite sheer perfection. Whoever was in
charge of mastering this for DVD went nuts with the tinting -- the blue for
nighttime scenes and red for interiors are practically psychedelic, and they
eliminate a lot of contrast. I had to fiddle quite a bit with the TV's
settings to get the color down to a manageable level and to re-establish as
much contrast as could be done. In fact, at one point I just dialed out the
color entirely and watched it for a while in black and white. ;)

The most interesting segment natch is the one with Connie as the mad Ivan the
Terrible. What a performance! And he looks splendid in his heavy Russian
robes.

I have been reading a lot lately about German Expressionnist movies of the early twenties... But I have never found anything about their tinted film... They seem to be the only ones to use this technique. French movies at that time were "mere" black and white films.
Do you have some little details about the tinting ?
Anyway, you are lucky to get Waxworks. I have never been able to see it. In France, only Nosferatu and Metropolis are regularly broadcasted. We have Arte (fortunately), a French-German TV Channel : but only The Golem, Metropolis (no surprise there) and the Blue Angel for the moment.

I don't have any info about the tinting, other than this Waxworks is
definitely tinted. Overly tinted, IMHO :)

But to make it clear, this was NOT a broadcast on television; it's a DVD.
You can purchase it as one of the DVDs in the new Kino German Horror
Collection box set or as a separate title.

If you are in Europe and have a modified DVD player that plays Region 1
(North America), then you should be able to buy this and watch it.

Thanks for your unbelievably fast answer..
I did understand it was on DVD... I was simply wondering about the tinted effect. It seems to be so German (early 20's).
But no one mentionned it as a specificity of these movies. The Kino German Horror
Collection box set cannot be purchased out of America... but even separately their price is still far cheaper than in Europe. But my DVD reader is not modified. Bad for me.

I was indeed a pleasure speaking with you this morning. We very much
appreciate your personal interest in our production and its message.

The fact that both Sir Peter Ustinov and French screen legend Jeanne Moreau
are attached gives us significant credence. Other US actors are being
approached to add to the transatlantic strength. Clearly, we have a
worldwide message . . .
