Yay! Someone else who has seen the commericals. This game has been
going on for about a month now and has a lot of really great features
in it: Minor real time updates daily with major puzzle updates once a
week or so. At least 4 real world interactions so far. And a bunch of
cool swag (Treos have been given out at least once).

Well, unfiction is only "involved" in the fact that is where all the
major discussion is taking place. The link from stolena3 was added
once a bunch of trolls started posting all over the boards complaing
at how fake this all was and how they didn't like being duped
(because they thought they were clicking on an ad for a game designer
called Virgil Tatum and not a cleverly disgusied game that's an ad
for Audi).
Besides unfiction, there is a quick start guide (
http://soogees.com/stuff/heist/ ), a Trail (
http://heist.smirkbox.com ), a Wiki and a chat room ( #heist at
irc.chat-solutions.org ). It's still not to late to start playing -
all of us in chat & the boards are more than willing to answer your
questions.

Subject: [cloudmakers] Cloudmaker Research Survey
Thanks to all the Cloudmakers out there who took the time to complete
my research survey. Your input has been quite valuable. The survey
will be accessible for one more week. If you are an original
Cloudmaker and haven't taken the time to fill it out, now is your
chance. The URL is:
http://www.people.virginia.edu/~ras5p/
If you have any questions about this study, or want more details, I
have included my original post below.
Thanks,
Richard Sebastian
Hello, Cloudmakers:
I am a doctoral student in Instructional Technology at the University
of Virginia. I am conducting a pilot research study on the Cloudmakers
group that formed around the online interactive game The Beast. The
purpose of the study is to understand the appeal of interactive,
web-based games like The Beast and the social, problem-solving
networks that develop during game-play. I especially want to explore
how these kinds of games can be adapted for education.
The pilot study consists of completing a short, open-ended web-based
survey. A handful of participants who complete this initial survey
will be selected for a follow-up interview. That interview will be
conducted individually during an online chat.
The study is limited to participants who are 18 years or older and are
current members of the Cloudmaker group that were involved in playing
The Beast during its initial release in April of 2001.
Your participation is completely voluntary. If you are interested in
participating, please follow this URL
(http://www.people.virginia.edu/~ras5p/) to read and complete the
consent agreement. Once you complete the consent agreement, you will
be taken to the online survey.
If you have any questions about this study, feel free to contact me at
sebastian@...
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your
time!

Hi everyone,
Sean's got a new novel coming out next month, and we've updated his website:
http://seanstewart.org/news/
Check out more details about Perfect Circle at:
http://seanstewart.org/novels/perfectcircle/
He's put up two chapters of the novel there, so I encourage you all to print
them out, settle down, read them and go buy a copy :)
Those in NYC can see Sean at the Little Gray Book lecture series on 2 June,
while those in Chicago can see him at the Book Expo America on 5-6 June.

*** Happy Birthday to Us ***
11th April 2001 ring any bells? Today is Cloudmakers' three year birthday.
That mailing you signed up for oh so very long ago, the one where some
people were jabbering on about this guy called Evan and how he was dead?
Three years today.
(An aside: it looks like we have around five and a half thousand people
still signed up to the main list, having lost around two thousand since our
peak. Two thousand over two years is, incidentally, six hundred and
sixty-six point six recurring. Rather fitting, I thought.)
Three years ago, we all fell down a rabbit hole and plunged into a world of
murderous sex-bots (but it wasn't their fault, honest), genital re-treads,
singing mailbots, step-selves (yes, you can congratulate yourselves for
managing to wriggle out of that mess, PMs) and a globe spanning web of
plankton. Oh, and a certain Mr. Sweborg. Oh, it was fun. But anyway, enough
of looking back.
*** What's been happening in the ARG universe? ***
Biggest shout out, as ever, goes to you - the players. Without people like
you putting together the ARG Network (http://www.argn.com/) and other
community hubs like Unfiction Forums (http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/)
and Collective Detective (http://collectivedetective.org/), there wouldn't
be much of a genre left. Game of the moment is AWARE
(http://www.ruaware.org/), in pre-game mode right now (check out discussion
at http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=72).
PM-wise, Elan Lee has jumped ship and is now VP of design at Myriad Mobile
(http://www.myriadmobile.com/). Mod-wise, rumour has it that a startling
proportion of them now actually have jobs and aren't students any more.
*** Sean's New Books (emphasis on plural) ***
PERFECT CIRCLE
Sean Stewart has two (two!) books coming out. Perfect Circle is due out June
15 2004 from Small Beer Press - check out the publisher's page here:
http://www.lcrw.net/seanstewart/index.htm
so you all need to go out and buy at least three copies and tell all of your
friends to do the same. And for them to tell their friends to do the same,
too. Those in New York--or near it--get to Sean speak at the Little Gray
Book Lecture Series on 2 June, although Sean reliably informs me that these
aren't *boring* lectures and promise to be a whole barrel of fun. As if they
wouldn't be...
DARK RENDEZVOUS - A CLONE WARS NOVEL
And yes, the rumours are true: Sean's other book is a Star Wars novel.
Here's what he had to say about it:
"Yes, it's true‹I've written a Star Wars novel. Funny how life works out,
isn't it? ButŠ I was eleven when SW came out. I made a (sad and floppy)
lightsaber by lashing a length of PVC tubing to a flashlight with black
electrical tape, and demonstrating in the process why I was not cut out to
be an engineer.
"One of the things that made this project appealing was the chance to write
about the Big Questions‹truth and pain, the difficulty of right action and
the Problem of Evil‹in a context that, like, half a million people, many of
them kids like the one who made the lightsaber, would stop to read.
"Plus for twenty years I have wanted to write a really killer swordfight
scene, and I finally got my chance."
Again, now's the time to propel this book up the Amazon charts. Buy at least
three copies and tell all your friends to:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0345463099/102-1294971-7435309
*** Enough about us ***
Where are *you* now? And are you still waiting for the next big thing?

Dan Hon (co-mod)

Hi all,
Adrian and I are involved in the launch of a new game, and our project is
hiring.
Check out the teaser at http://www.projectsyzgy.com/
It would be an understatement to say that we're both very excited and
optimistic about this :)
We'd both love to tell you more, but (as the saying goes), we'd have to kill

Someone over at theDarkTower.net (tyler himself I believe) stumbled

Wolves of the Calla, then you will recognize this name... Sure enough,
if you click on Developement you will get a log in screen. We know the

Don't know how good this one will be but I have to admit to getting

Hop on over to http://thedarktower.net/forums and search for the

Subject: [cloudmakers] ANNOUNCE: CM Anniversary Party/ARGFest-o-Con in
Las Vegas
Hey everyone,
If you live anywhere near Las Vegas, consider joining us for a
little get together, just like the old Cloudmaker Parties. Most of
us who will be there are/were Cloudmakers, so we'll be celebrating
CM's anniversary while we're at it.
The party will be on Saturday evening, April 26th. To throw a little
wrinkle into it, you must solve a little puzzle to get specific info
on exactly when and where the festivities will be. To dive right in,
info and the puzzle can be found at
http://www.marthasboardinghouse.com/exodus/argfestocon.htm .
It's going to be a great time, and we've got over a dozen people
coming so far. Plus, there are rumors of some interesting things in
store. Hope to see some of you there!
