Hi everyone,
In the interest of starting a discussion, I would like to pose a
question to you all. Excluding The Sound of Music, what is your
favorite scene in any of Christopher Plummer's movies?
I haven't seen all of his movies, but one of my favorite scenes is
the poolside scene from Inside Daisy Clover. Christopher Plummer's
character, Raymond Swan, has just spent the night with his suicidal
wife and he walks out by the pool and finds Natalie Wood's
character, Daisy, lying in a lounge chair.
I love this scene for many reasons. The most obvious are the kiss
(of course) and the fact that the man looks absolutely gorgeous in
a suit. I also like that this scene gives some dimension to the
previously one-sided character of Raymond Swan. We learn that
Raymond Swan loves his wife and that he feels terribly inadequate
when compared to the larger-than-life-images of the movie stars he
helps to create.
I especially like this scene because of the way it was filmed.
Raymond Swan is talking to Daisy, but the camera never cuts to her
face, even when he is reacting to her reaction to what he is
saying. It showcases Mr. Plummer's talents. With the camera
directed at him the entire time, it must have been a difficult scene
to shoot, but he performs it beautifully.
And the kiss; the kiss is passionate and agonizing at the same
time. It is not a happily-ever-after kind of kiss. Raymond Swan
does not love Daisy and she certainly does not love him. The kiss
is just a mutual sharing of pain. They have both been hurt by the
same man and are taking comfort in each others pain.
I want to hear from the rest of you. What is your favotite scene?
By the way; the Laendler dance scene is my favorite scene from the
SOM.
