>Event History & Overview
>
>Challenge For The Children was founded in 1999 by the members of the
multi-platinum music group *NSYNC. Chris Kirkpatrick, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone,
Justin Timberlake, and JC Chasez wanted to start an organization to raise funds
for children in need and to oversee how the funds are distributed. They believe
that children are the world's greatest natural resource and that investing time,
attention and funding to targeted programs will make the future a brighter
place.
>
>The mission for Challenge For The Children is to offer financial support to
children's programs and charities throughout the country. The organization
focuses on funding schools that have suffered cutbacks in sports and music
programs and children's healthcare programs including pediatric AIDS, adoption,
foster care, teen pregnancy, alcohol/drug programs and the fight against teen
violence.
>
>In addition to being a foundation, Challenge For The Children is also the name
of the charity's annual event, which has grown from a one-day fundraiser to a
three-day weekend full of activities for supporters of the foundation to enjoy.
To date Challenge for the Children has raised over three million dollars for
charities such as the Justin Timberlake Foundation, Arnold Palmer Hospital for
Children & Women, Hope Village for Children, Lifebeat, Nordoff-Robbins
Foundation, Childwatch, Childplace, and Epilepsy Foundation, among many others.
>
>Challenge For The Children I was held in Atlanta, Georgia on the campus of
Georgia State in August of 1999. The event was highlighted by an All-Star
celebrity basketball game with team Daze taking on the Knights. Each team was
headed-up by the members of *NSYNC and also included celebrities such as Usher,
the R&B Group 112, Jermaine Dupri, actor Jon Seda, choreographer turned actor
Darrin Henson, rap duo Youngbloodz and Mase, Josh Keaton, Brian McKnight and his
brother Claude McKnight. Also supporting the game were celebrity coaches NBA
players Dennis Scott, Antawn Jamison, Chris Webber, Kobe Bryant and Reggie
Miller. Atlanta Falcon Jamal Anderson was the play-by-play announcer.
>
>After the great turnout in 1999, Challenge For The Children II grew into a
two-day event with a VIP reception and memorabilia auction held at New York's
Planet Hollywood followed the next day with the celebrity basketball game held
on the campus of St. John's University. Again, the stars turned out to play with
*NSYNC and to raise funds for their foundation. New faces included Queen
Latifah, Pink, Dean Winters, Amanda Lewis, Fat Joe, Kelly Price, Beverly
Mitchell, Isaiah Thomas, Boris Kodjoe, Nikki DeLoach, and Peter Gunz. Dennis
Scott returned as coach along with Felipe Lopez, Stephen Marbury, Elton Brand,
and Erick Strickland.
>
>For 2001 Challenge For The Children III moved to Las Vegas, Nevada for a
star-studded three days of activities. The weekend (July 27-29) featured the
All-Star basketball game, Skills Challenge, Celebrity Scavenger Hunt and Silent
Auction to mention a few of the exciting elements! As the host hotel the MGM
Grand hosted many of the events, along with the Thomas & Mack Center, Club RA,
The Luxor Hotel, and of course, Planet Hollywood
