Note: Recognizing that the success or failure of Asian and Asian
American businesses/media options affect each other, the below-listed
information is strategic to having additional successful media
options providing Asian and Asian American content that provides
outlets for films such as BLT.
*
With TopTV USA's acquiring financial partners having a majority stake
in the company - as noted by the below-listed press release, what
will be the future status of TopTV USA's current CEO - Able Kwan?
*
With the fast-growing importance and value of having the proper
professional management providing Asian content, careful examination
is needed of all companies such as TopTV USA.
*
For those interested in having viable media outlets for Asian content
throughout the U.S., contact the below-listed resources for
additional information and their January 8, 2009 meeting at Monterey

Note: Considering that "Better Luck Tomorrow" was a torchbearer of
what could happen in the Asian American communities, KSCI's 18.6
could be a strategic factor in bringing content in a professional
fashion - as oppose to the "all-to-common" badly produced
Chinese/Asian content on television. If interested, come and attend.

  -

MEDIA ADVISORY
KSCI's 18.6 - Will It Hit the "Top" or Bottom?

Southern California's KSCI is attempting hit the "Top" with the
Chinese-speaking communities with TopTV USA - an Irvindale-based
production company. Noting the large influential Chinese population
based in the Monterey Park/San Gabriel area and the surrounding
cities going eastward - there is a great need to provide content for
these communities. KSCI is hoping that TopTV USA will provide
excellent production values and professionalism indicative of the
best qualities of the Chinese communities to counteract the on-going
reputation of presenting mismanaged, misrepresented and
undercapitalized productions.

Recent rumors and activities are providing tangible indications that
TopTV USA is having troubles with KSCI, its financing, production,
its internal management and leadership while leaving a trail of
unpaid sub-contractors/vendors bills that provides serious concerns
regarding their success. An upcoming meeting will provide
opportunities for the media and other interested parties to hear
directly from TopTV USA's CEO Able Kwan and management addressing the
recent rumors and activities surrounding their operations - along
with their future plans.

It is anticipated that following will be among the subjects that will
be discussed - highlights of their business plan outlining their
goals for long term success, their constantly changing relationship
with KSCI, paying their fast-growing number of unpaid
subcontractors/vendors bills they have long ignored, Allen Wu/Chinese
Media Group Corp.'s acquisition of a majority stake of TopTV USA,
their financial ability for continued success while identifying what
changes in leadership will provide the necessary confidence for
success and their leadership issues.

For those interested in learning about the future of KSCI's 18.6's
partnership with Able Kwan's TopTV USA, invitation is extended to
answer all your questions.

Dear Friends,

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - SEPTEMBER 5 AND SEPTEMBER 12 FOR THE OPENING OF THE FILM PING PONG PLAYA!

The new comedy from Oscar winner Jessica Yu - PING PONG PLAYA  opens September 5th in SAN FRANCISCO, SAN  JOSE, BERKELEY, LOS ANGELES, GLENDALE, ALHAMBRA, IRVINE and NEW YORK.
On September 12, the film opens in SEATTLE and HOUSTON!  Please spread the word and send email blasts!

It's an exciting time--but here's where we need you. We'll let the movie speak for itself (if the reactions of people who have seen the movie is any indication, we firmly believe you won't be disappointed),
but we need your help to spread the word about the release of the movie.

Independent movies don't have the marketing budget to compete against the mammoth studio movies, but what we do have is intense, strong word-of-mouth
(just check out any of a number of our reviews--from outlets large and small, from critics, bloggers, and chat room posters alike).

We are encouraging groups of people to buy out blocks of seats on our first opening weekend in each of these cities.  Bring your friends, your family and your neighbors.  The film is for all ages.
In San Francisco - on Saturday, September 6 - we have some groups of people buying out seats and in Los Angeles there will be groups coming to the Mann Chinese 6 and Alhambra.  We
could use more people buying out seats on all of the other cities and every theater.  Our website: www.pingpongplaya.com

And if you know of any friends w/ websites or blogs that want to support the film by putting up our banner ads, please download here:

Please help us continue to spread the word and come check out the movie opening weekend (Sept 5--LA/SF/NY; Sept 12--Seattle/Houston).

HERE ARE THE LIST OF THEATERS - PLEASE CHECK LOCAL LISTINGS FOR TIMES AND TO BUY TICKETS.  SOME THEATERS WILL OFFER DISCOUNTS FOR GROUP SALES - PLEASE CHECK WITH THEM.

Office Sonata, by Andy Chmelko, is a madcap satire of corporate America that follows the bizarre and often hilarious day-to-day workings of Empire Advertising.  The story centers on a cadre of overworked and underappreciated executive assistants, who try as they might to endure the company's harebrained regimens to boost productivity and profit margin.

Like the popular t.v. series, Office Sonata will definitely tickle the ribs of anyone who has ever toiled in vain for a dimwit boss in the ubiquitous, cubicle-laden office of a large corporation.

Dear Friends,

This Friday, April 18 marks the Los Angeles theatrical premiere of the acclaimed film "DARK MATTER" from Chen Shi-Zheng and starring Liu Ye, Meryl Streep and Aidan Quinn and produced by Janet Yang.  Tell your friends about this very important film.

The film will open on April 18 in Southern California at the following theaters:

LOS ANGELES -
Laemmle's Sunset 5 Theatres
8000 Sunset Boulevard
West Hollywood, CA  90069
www.laemmle.com for tickets

PASADENA -
Laemmle's Playhouse 7
673 E. Colorado Boulevard
Pasadena, CA
www.laemmle.com

IRVINE/ORANGE COUNTY
Edwards Town Center Cinemas 6
4245 Campus Drive
Irvine, CA

DARK MATTER’s poetic and personal story highlights important social and cultural issues facing America today.  Based on a true story set in the early 1990s, DARK MATTER stars Liu Ye as Liu Xing (Chinese for “shooting star”), a graduate student at an American university pursuing his Ph.D. in “dark matter,” an unseen substance that shapes the universe. Driven to compete against the highest echelon in his field, Liu Xing also tries to fit in with his community through his friendship with Joanna Silver (Meryl Streep), a wealthy patron of the university.

When the head of his department, Jacob Reiser (Aidan Quinn), chooses him as his protégé, Liu Xing is convinced only hard work stands between him and a bright future.  That is, until, his unique theories challenge Reiser’s own established work in the field.  Excited that he could surpass his mentor, Liu Xing turns a deaf ear when he’s advised to “pay his dues” and not jeopardize the relationship.

Instead, he clings to the idea that the American scientific community is a free market of ideas and American society is wide open to hard-working immigrants.

Too proud to accept help from Joanna, and unwilling to return home to his parents, Liu Xing becomes a ghost-like presence at the university. But the choices he makes to get his work accepted leads to a downward spiral, both in terms of his standing at the university and within himself.

DARK MATTER has a screenplay by Billy Shebar and a story by Chen Shi-Zheng and Billy Shebar. The film was financed by American Sterling Productions and produced by Janet Yang of American Sterling Productions and Mary Salter and Andrea Miller of Saltmill LLC. Kirk D’Amico and Linda Chiu are executive producers.

Through collaboration with leading non-profit organizations, DARK MATTER contributes valuable insight to the public dialogue.

Join us this weekend in Los Angeles, New York and Boston for DARK MATTER.  Please forward this email to your friends and family.

KOFIC USA is hosting a Korean Film Festival from Nov 15-18 in L.A.  Tickets for films can be purchased at the theater and there will also be a free panel on Nov. 15 (info below).

KOFIC USA To Host A Panel Discussion
On Remaking Korean Movies in Hollywood

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC USA), in partnership with Korean Cinematheque, will be hosting the first annual Korean Film Festival in Los Angeles (KOFFLA) from Nov. 15 to Nov. 18.   Sponsored by the Korea Times and the Hollywood Reporter, KOFFLA will have this theme for its inaugural year: "It's Alive: Korean Film Genre Hybrids and Hollywood Remakes."

In addition to the more than 15 films being screened at the Fairfax 3 Theaters, KOFFLA 2007 will feature a Nov. 15 panel discussion on the viability of Korean films as potential material for Hollywood remakes.   In production already are 3films, including "My Sassy Girl," and they will follow last year's Keanu Reeves-Sandra Bullock romance "Lake House."   Plus, the rights to more than 10 other Korean movies have been purchased by American studios.  But with Korean cinema's dynamic mixing of different genres, like blending a horror with a comedy, more of these movies, including the features in this year's festival, can transcend language and borders and be translated for American as well as worldwide audiences by a visionary filmmaker.

On hand to discuss the phenomenon of importing and remaking Korean movies will be Zak Kadison, vice president of production at Fox Atomic and a producer on the remake of "My Sassy Girl"; Jonathan Kim of Dain Pictures, which produced the hit Korean films "Silmido" and "To Catch a Virgin Ghost", and Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee, who has been behind many of the recent remakes from Asia, from "The Ring" and "The Departed" to "The Lake House."  The panel will be moderated by David Alpert of management and production company Circle of Confusion, and is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Fairfax 3 Theaters.

KOFIC USA, with this conference, hopes to foster opportunities for American filmmakers to remake Korean movies here in Hollywood and to help develop relationships that might lead to a Korean-American co-production.   KOFIC was established in 1976 by South Korea's Ministry of Culture and Tourism to promote the country's film industry. Initially founded as the Korean Motion Pictures Promotion Corporation (KMPPC), KOFIC started endorsing films under its current name in 1999. Since then, KOFIC's objective has been to increase the awareness and appreciation of Korean films by promoting the development of both Korean and Korean American films. Its achievements include the Filmmakers Development Lab (FDL), a Korean film database, and various film festivals and screenings. In 2007, KOFIC launched its first U.S. branch office, KOFIC USA, in Los Angeles.

SYNOPSIS
Eve & the Fire Horse
A Film by Julia Kwan
Eve, a precocious nine year-old with an overactive imagination, was born in the Year of the Fire Horse, notorious among Chinese families for producing the most troublesome children. Dinners around Eve's family table are a raucous affair, where old world propriety and new world audacity mix in even measure. But as summer approaches, it seems like Eve's carefree childhood days are behind her.
When her mother chops down their apple tree — a superstitious omen — bad luck worms its way into their family in unexpected, tragic ways. Forced to grow up too fast, Eve learns to take pleasure in life's small gifts — like a goldfish she believes to be the reincarnated spirit of her beloved grandmother.
Meanwhile, Eve's older sister Karena is going through changes of her own, exploring a newfound fascination with Christianity. Soon, crucifixes pop up next to the Buddha in the family's house, and Eve must contend with a Sunday school class where her wild imagination is distinctly out of place.
Caught between her sister's quest for premature sainthood and her own sense of right and wrong, Eve faces the challenges of childhood with fanciful humor and wide-eyed wonder. Along the way, she proves that sometimes the most troublesome children are the ones that touch our hearts most deeply
A lyrical, lighthearted look at a young girl's spiritual experience, EVE & THE FIRE HORSE takes you on a wondrous yet deeply felt journey, where family life is strange, childhood lonely and religion perplexing.
EVE & THE FIRE HORSE is the first feature film from director Julia Kwan and features international film star Vivian Wu, Chan Chit Man Lester, Ping Sung Wong, Hollie Lo and introducing Phoebe Jojo Kut as "Eve."  The film was also written by Julia Kwan and produced by Shan Tam, Erik Paulsson and Yves J. Ma.

Directed by Scott Werve

Stories of the Night Told Over is a fluid collision of several
Shakespearean romantic comedies, where the well-known lovers contained
therein (Petruchio/Kate, Beatrice/Benedick, etc…) interact
simultaneously in the same story in a brand new context. Each of the
characters in "Stories" belongs to Shakespeare, and nearly every word
each speaks during the course of the story can be found in one of
Shakespeare's tragedies or comedies. However, the way these words are
inter-cut and overlapped from play to play is a completely unique
presentation of Shakespeare, designed to extend familiar characters
into exciting new situations.

THE NAMESAKE is the story of the Ganguli family whose move from Calcutta to New York evokes a lifelong balancing act to meld to a new world without forgetting the old. Though parents Ashoke and Ashima (Irrfan Khan, Tabu) long for the family and culture that enveloped them in India, they take great pride in the opportunities their sacrifices have afforded their children. Paradoxically, their son Gogol (Kal Penn) is torn between finding his own unique identity without losing his heritage. Even Gogol’s name represents the family’s journey into the unknown.  Helmed by the Academy Award®-nominated Mira Nair, THE NAMESAKE is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri.

“A spellbinding exploration of love and belonging” - Elle
“Thoroughly engaging, terrifically moving” - Premiere
“A glory on a huge colorful canvas” – Wall Street Journal

3.  SOUTH KOREA'S ALL TIME BOX OFFICE WINNER "THE HOST" HITS THE US
Some of you have been waiting for this film to hit the screens and now it is here.  THE HOST from South Korea has been one of this year's most anticipated films since it debuted at last year's Cannes Film Festival and wowed audiences in the south of France.  It went on to win more fans at Toronto Film Fest and now courtesy of Magnolia Pictures, it is here in the US.  Loads of fun and a true monster movie.  Short premise:  US lab people keep dumping toxic waste into the South Korean waters for years - only to grow a "creature' of large proportions who decides one spring day to come up from the waters and try to gobble everything in its path.  Good performances and a very capable "creature' make THE HOST one of the best "monster" movies ever.  Whatever happened to that genre - sure we have horror - but this is straight up "monster."  Think "Creature from the Black Lagoon" but set in South Korea.  Come see what everyone is talking about.
