Palm checks into 'Motel'
Sundance pic bought by studio
By NICOLE LAPORTE
Palm Pictures has bought "The Motel," by tyro director Michael Kang. Pic
preemed at the Sundance Film Festival this year.
The film was developed at the Sundance Filmmakers Lab in 2002, where
Kang
worked with Sundance alum Miguel Arteta, a producer on "The Motel."
"The Motel" was also produced by Matthew Greenfield, Arteta's producing
partner at Flan de Coco Films, as well as Gina Kwon and Karin Chien.
Exec producers are Richard, Esther and Edie Shapiro.
Palm Pictures' David Koh brokered the deal.
"The Motel" is the story of 13-year-old Ernest Chin, who lives and works
at a
sleazy, hourly-rate motel on a strip of desolate suburban byway.
Misunderstood by his family and blindly careening into puberty, Ernest
befriends Sam Kim,
a self-destructive yet charismatic Korean-American man who has checked
in to
the motel. Sam teaches the fatherless boy all the rites of manhood.
The primarily Asian-American cast is led by Jeffrey Chyau (Ernest), Sung
Kang
(Sam) and Jade Wu.
"The Motel" is the first film that longstanding partners Greenfield and
Arteta are producing as a team. Formerly, the duo's projects, such as
Fox
Searchlight pic "The Good Girl" and Artisan Entertainment's "Chuck and
Buck"have been
helmed by Arteta and produced by Greenfield.
