'Barbarella' is up there with 'Valley of the Dolls', 'The Devil is a
Woman', 'The Wizard of Oz' , 'Casino Royale' and 'The Tenth
Victim' as one of my favorite movies of all time. I love everything
about it, the stars, the sets, the costumes, the visuals and the
fantastic soundtrack. It is how I want the future to look, sexy big
hair and big eyes, beautiful people and a camp sensibility.
This past weekend I got the widescreen DVD because it was
finally reduced, and was saddened that the film hasn't been
remastered as well as it could be, (its great, but not perfect) and
there are no extras apart from the trailer. Hopefully in years to
come, there will be a special fully restored edition DVD with
behind the scenes footage, gallery's, and doco's on all those
concerned. Recently I also got the Barbarella soundtrack (at last
on CD through HARKIT), and this is so well done I was beside
myself. What a treat with the fold out poster, bonus tracks and
radio spots. Yes, the music should be used in the new film, or
elaborated upon. But really, why redo it, who could ever look like
Jane did in this classic. And do filmakers today really understand
what a 'spoof' is? This film has something new to discover every
time you see it. That's why, as an artist, I've painted Barbarella
more than any other pop icon. When you have a film that you
really loved in your youth, it stays with you always.
As a child I always loved watching the villains, the beautiful Evil
Queen or Wicked Witch, but then sadly saw them die. In
'Barbarella' the angel Pygar rescues both Barbarella and the
Black Queen, and that always made perfect sense to me. Wow!
