The original 1968 movie "Barbarella" was shown in a censored form
here in the USA.
In 1976 a more heavily censored version was issued under the
title "Barbarella, Queen of the Galaxy". This is the only version
that ever got released on home video. The DVD is simply this and
nothing more.
The censorship, to my knowledge, removed a lesbian love scene between
Babs and the Queen, in the Chamber of Dreams. I don't know what else
got chopped, but there is a character in the credits, "Captain Sun" I
think, who does not seem to be in the movie. And there is a pic on
the Net of a scene where she is sitting in Alphie talking to a man
with a salt-and-pepper mustache. This could be him.
There are also pics available from the first attempt to shoot the
Secret Underground's leader (the scene after the birds). The Italian
actor was popular at the time, but couldn't act. Jame Fonda was able
to convince hubby to replace him, and he reshot the scenes with David
Hemmings.
I read on the Net that Paramount restored "Barbarella" ca. 1992.
The "Barbarella, Queen of the Galaxy" print is clearly faded and
unrestored. Apparently Paramount is sitting on the restored,
uncensored, unchopped version and selling a chainsaw-edited faded
print instead. Lovely folks. Anyone have an email address for
Paramount that actually gets read, and know a good online petition
place?
