Bill,

The Baroness is such a vain and glamorous beauty at the beginning of
the film, so the final scene is all the more improbable. Her lovely
face stained with soot, and her elaborate hairdo wrecked, she still
pines for the Baron in that humiliating cage.

In real life, the Dick Van Dyke character would release lovely and
leggy Anna from that cage. whisking her away from the Baron and a
very wooden Sally Ann Howes. Think this fantasy crossed his mind
during that final scene?
