I don't consider Chuck Walters to be an auteur, Fred.

Or Allen Midgette either.

You rang?
Seriously, I consider "auteurs" to be a very select
group of film diretors: Fellini (curiously despised by
most auturists), Hitchcock, Bergman, Bresson, Dreyer,
Welles, Cocteau, Sturges, Wilder, Resnais, Sacha
Guitry, Rivette, Chris Marker, Jacques Demy, Godard,
Visconti, Franju, Whale, Agnes Varda, Pasolini,
Mankiewicz, Warhol (but not Morrissey), and Patrice
Chereau.
Non-"autuers" -- like Walters, Cukor, Wyler, Stevens
-- are perfectly capable of making great films.
