The first extended piece of film criticism I ever
write was an article on "Seven Women" for "December"
magazine -- a marvelous Chicago-based literaery
journal.
Several years back I had the great pleasure of
interviewing Anne Bancroft at length about her career
- and "Seven Women" in particular. She took over from
Patricia Neal who had her massive stroke a few weeks
into filming. Everythign Frod shot with her was
scrapped and he started all over again with Bancroft.
I told her how much like John Wayne her performance
was, and she said Ford used to call her "Duke" on the
set. There was a band that palyed his favorte songs so
you always knew when he arrived because the band would
strik up "Shall We Gather at the River."
To my mind "Seven Women" is very much of a piece with
the late works of certain classical filmmakers eg.
"Getrud," "A King in New York."
