Tag, you've been mentioning how you think many of our commonly used
terms "have no meaning," starting with categories
like "experimental." While I can see where you're trying to take us -
after working in an academic environment like the NYU Cinema Studies
program, I'm well aware of the value of this kind of dialogue - I
don't agree that these terms are meaningless. It may be that the
terms are artificial, arbitrary, rooted in commerce, and that the
boundaries that get set up by commentators and viewers are a great
deal more dynamic than people would often like to think, if they
exist at all.

But that's not the same as saying they have no meaning, right?

In getting rid of these terms, we'll be eliminating a lot of
the "terms of discussion" that we have to analyze our most treasured
auteurs. I think these terms are useful.

I think getting rid of these terms would do us all a world of good. Even academia might redeem itself! Alchemy had its defendors in its day, and witch burning...

... I'm pretty convinced at this point (in my life, not "at this point" on the list) that words create thought, at least in the "nothing meaningful exists...
