Kubrick's Boxes
by Gordy Hoffman
I watched a movie on Kubricks boxes last night. The master would prepare so
completely and with such great detail, he left behind thousands of boxes of
photographs, notes, memos, fan letters and blank stationary, all collected and
stored meticulously in service of the development of his work, produced and very
much unproduced.

To some, this level of commitment is excessive. I found it oddly soothing. It
was like the first time I saw the opening of LA DOLCE VITA. (If you havent seen
this, stop reading this article and watch the movie.)

I have a threshold in me for what I think is good, and often it makes me feel
like I might be too demanding of myself, of others. I believe many of us have an
eye for a quality of storytelling in our screen writing that keeps us working on
making our scripts even more brilliant, more original, more new.

But I have to admit I wish I could ignore it. I wish sometimes I could take this
instinct for better work, for bettering work, out back of the house and shoot
it. Yet theres no ignoring this irritable little cousin.

This is our integrity. My integrity. And I need to make a commitment all the
time to not only not ignore it, but to welcome it and bring it into my home.

Life is short. What am I doing as a writer? Why do I want to make films? Do
some of us, including myself, secretly and openly desire to write a commercially
successful screenplay? Of course.

But if I hit the formula, if I nail the convention, the best thing that could
happen is I become rich.

If this sounds good, have at it, theres probably room for more of you. Is
there something wrong with that? No, of course not. Its a completely admirable
way to go, very respectable, and it could be very satisfying. It obviously is,
as there are writers for every movie, and theyre hired.

But its not enough for me. Just isnt.

Now Im not saying I wont write something mainstream, a big popcorn movie. I
love those movies, and when I can find my heart in the story, something I deeply
care about, I have great passion for that writing.

And its not because I have some righteous, pompous complex about being an
Artist.

Its because I cant settle for less, only because it makes me distressed. Who
wants to feel like that? No wonder I want to kill it sometimes.

But it isnt going anywhere, and if I allow it to be my map, I eventually start
reaching something truly special.

How can I invite this credibility to flourish and mature in my work? How can I
admit one more box of revision? Well, its the one thing I see a lot of
screenwriters lost for.

Patience. I need patience. If Im in a rush to say Im done, then the inner
voice of my best is squelched. If I am patient, I will write another draft. I
will trust my audience with exposition. I will wait for the original character,
the truthful relationship.

I will look at everything until I look at one thing with my audience for the
first time.

I will fill a thousand boxes to find the masterpiece.

So maybe at least today again, I will admit what little time I have left, and
take enough time to do the truly most honest work my heart demands. I dont know
what I have, but I will wait for it, nonetheless.

The BlueCat Screenwriting Workshops come to LONDON !

August 12-17, 2008

Birkbeck, University of London
Malet Street, Bloomsbury
London WC1E 7HX

REGISTER HERE: http:// www.bluecatscreenplay.com/workshop/london.php

Gordy Hoffman, the award-winning writer/director (LOVE LIZA, A COAT OF SNOW) and
founder of the BlueCat Screenplay Competition, will travel to the UK this August
to lead a week of screenwriting workshops at the University of London.

The creative principles of the workshops were borne out of over a decade of
experience of judging the only major script competition in the world helmed by a
produced screenwriter, a writer who continues to write today.

The BlueCat workshops help the writer develop the authentic, original voice
behind every story that impacts the emotions of the audience, the essence of all
commercially and artistically successful films.

If you care passionately about your script and story, this week will provide the
tools to transform your commitment and concern into a compelling film.

THE ART OF SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP
09:00 - 17:00 on August 16, 17 in room B35 Malet Street
Cost: £150

The screenplay is creative writing. It is imagination in action, the heart of
every experience of the writer speaking truthfully and generously.

Writing creatively for the screen has no method, no formula, no rigid worksheets
to comply with or enforceable rules hanging on a wall somewhere. Every
conformity or formula determined and “discovered” by the screenwriting
establishment can be blown apart by some of our most beloved movies.

But what cannot be argued away is that every classic movie we love has affected
us emotionally.

This is always true.

There are principles of authentic storytelling. Yes. But these are not learned,
but remembered from our own experiences of living our lives. The ability to tell
a story lies inside every human being.

Writers will engage in writing and pitching exercises designed to flesh out new
ideas or rework existing scripts. Please bring your laptops and/or paper and
pen.

If each person is indeed unique, it follows simply that each writer is unlike
any other, and can write a story no one else on Earth can. This purpose is the
mission of this workshop.

09:00 - 17:00 on August 16, 17 in room B35 Malet Street
Cost: £150

REGISTER HERE:
www.bluecatscreenplay.com/workshop/london.php

THE TEN PAGE WORKSHOP
18:30 – 23:00 on August 12, 13, 14 in room 629 Malet Street
Cost: £125

These workshops will consist of 5 writers each submitting ten pages of a work in
progress in advance. We will go over each work individually, discussing the
specific, unique challenges each writer is facing on the page. This discussion
will include the technical aspects of description and dialogue, the depth and
reality of the characters, and how the ten pages reflect where the entire story
goes.

The intimate, focused interaction with fellow writers in the workshop will
provide all with a greater understanding of the work that lies ahead on their
screenplay, and more importantly, a detailed sense of how they might develop as
writers themselves.

18:30 – 23:00 on August 12 in room 629 Malet Street
Cost: £125 SOLD OUT

18:30 – 23:00 on August 13 in room 629 Malet Street

Hi fans,

Kev F here, of Beano and Bristol Comic Festival fame. Totally steering
off the course of comics for a moment, if any of you are going to be
in Edinburgh during the month of August, I'd love it if you'd check
out my show at the Edinburgh Fringe.

THE RETURN OF THE SCOTTISH FALSETTO SOCK PUPPET THEATRE is on every
night at 8.45 at the Gilded Balloon, and you can book tickets now at
edfringe.com or at gildedballoon.co.uk

The Scotsman called us "A hoot" and The Stage said we were "Utterly
irresistible". You'll enjoy it. Spread the word to anyone who'll be up
there, I'd hate them to miss out.

All the best, Kev F

PS: I should be on BBC 1 next week, with my comic artist hat on. Stay
tuned for transmission details as soon as I know them...

THE BLUECAT SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP COMES TO NYC!

In keeping with its mission to serve the undiscovered screenwriter, the Bluecat
Screenwriting Competition offers screenwriting workshops to directly support the
writers of our community in a personal, focused setting.

Led by Gordy Hoffman, the BlueCat workshops focus on the written work of the

craft. All technical, commercial and artistic aspects of screenwriting are

The TEN PAGE WORKSHOP has participants submitting ten pages from an existing
script or work-in-progress. We review all elements of story on display in the

The BlueCat Screenwriting Workshop: LONDON

August 12-17, 2008

Birkbeck, University of London
Malet Street, Bloomsbury

THE BLUECAT SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP

Cost: £150

Cost: £125

18:30 – 23:00 on August 13 in room 629 Malet Street
