Actor Says He Nearly Beheaded Tom Cruise

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Actor Hiroyuki Sanada said he came about half an inch from chopping off Tom Cruise (news)'s head with a sword while filming a fight scene for "The Last Samurai."

Sanada, who plays a samurai in the movie, said he was swinging a real sword when Cruise's mechanical horse malfunctioned and didn't fall down as planned.

"Tom's neck was right in front of me, and I tried to stop swinging my sword but it was hard to control with one hand," Sanada said.

When he finally stopped the sword, the blade was a mere half-inch from Cruise's neck, Sanada told reporters Thursday through a translator while promoting the film in Taipei.

"The film crew watching from the side all screamed because they thought Tom's head would fly off," said Sanada, using his hand to make a chopping motion to his neck.

He didn't say where or when the close call took place.

In "The Last Samurai," Cruise plays a Civil War veteran recruited to go to Japan to train soldiers to fight samurai, warriors who protected their feudal lords.

LONDON (Reuters) - American Civil War epic "Cold Mountain" is set to dominate Monday's British Academy Film Awards nominations, after it garnered most mentions on the academy's longlist.

BAFTA has released longlists of contenders in all 19 categories, with Cold Mountain, directed by Oscar-winning British director Anthony Minghella (news) leading the charge.

A mix of drama, comedy and animation is hoping to grab a slice of glory when the BAFTAs, Britain's equivalent of the Oscars (news - web sites), are handed out on February 15.

Jude Law (news) and Nicole Kidman (news) are vying for best actor and actress, while Philip Seymour Hoffman (news) and Renee Zellweger (news) are longlisted for their supporting roles in Cold Mountain, which is also hotly tipped to shine at the Oscars.

Cold Mountain is joined by British films "Calendar Girls" and "Love Actually" as contenders for a best picture nomination among a list of 15.

"The Return of the King" -- the final flick in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy -- and "Kill Bill" are also up for a best film nomination. Other contenders include heartwarming horse racing epic "Seabiscuit" and crime thriller "Mystic River."

A surprise inclusion in the best film category was the oddball comedy "Station Agent," about a man born with dwarfism.

"The Last Samurai," starring Tom Cruise (news), was not included, but he is in the running for a best actor nomination, BAFTA said.

U.S. actress Scarlett Johansson (news) is featured twice on the best actress longlist - for "Lost in Translation" and "Girl With a Pearl Earring."

The youngest actress by far on the best actress list is Keisha Castle-Hughes, who at 13 received critical acclaim for her performance in "Whale Rider."

Animation also features among the list, with "Finding Nemo" hoping to get a nomination for best screenplay.

Last year's BAFTA best picture winner was Holocaust film "The Pianist."

British television comedian Ricky Gervais, star of cult sitcom "The Office" might miss out on a chance to win an award because the BBC, which screens the series, forgot to nominate him.

Actor Tom Cruise has acted as cupid for a Portuguese couple, appearing on state television to implore a factory worker to marry her longtime cameraman boyfriend, it was reported.

According to the weekly newspaper Tal e Qual, Joao Martins, who works for Portuguese state broadcaster RTP, asked the star to make the plea after he met Cruise while covering the Spanish premiere of his latest blockbuster "The Last Samurai" in Madrid last Friday.

"Sonia, you have to marry Joao. Please marry Joao. He is crying behind the camera," Cruise said as he looked into the camera.

"Name your children after me," the actor added.

The cameraman was on the telephone with his girlfriend when Cruise's plea was broadcast on RTP later that same day and Sonia Braz immediately said yes to the marriage request, the paper reported. The couple plans to wed later this year.

Martins said he never imagined Cruise would agree to his request.

"All my girlfriend asked for was that I get his autograph," he told the paper.

Cruise often mingles with fans, and even takes calls on their mobile phones, during walkabouts before his movie premieres.

"It is not the norm," SAG President Melissa Gilbert (news) told
Reuters. "Actors understand the craft of acting. They have a deep
appreciation of what an actor does to create a character, and that
is what they vote for ... that is why you see performances picked
from a variety of films."

Gilbert said the SAG Awards were "not a popularity contest," and
added she believed the so-called "screener ban" this year, which
kept many major studios from sending tapes of award-hopeful films to
SAG voters, played a big role in boosting the visibility of
independent film performances.

Leading up to the SAG nominations, big-name Hollywood actors like
Tom Cruise (news) in "The Last Samurai," and Russell Crowe (news)
in "Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World," as well as
actresses such as Nicole Kidman (news) in "Cold Mountain," were the
leading candidates for acting honors.

Supporting actor nominations went to Alec Baldwin (news) for "The
Cooler," Chris Cooper (news) in "Seabiscuit," Benicio Del Toro
(news) in "21 Grams," Tim Robbins (news) in "Mystic River" and Ken
Watanabe for "The Last Samurai."

Supporting actress nominees were Maria Bello (news) for "The
Cooler," Keisha Castle-Hughes in "Whale Rider," Patricia Clarkson
in "Pieces of April," Holly Hunter (news) in "Thirteen" and Renee
Zellweger (news) for "Cold Mountain."

Zellweger's nomination was the only one for the Civil War epic as
SAG voters chose to ignore stars Kidman and Jude Law (news).

Winners of this year's awards from the Screen Actors Guild, the
trade union representing film and television actors and actresses,
will be announced in Los Angeles on Feb. 22 and televised on cable
TV network TNT. The Oscars (news - web sites) are on Feb. 29.

In the DVD version of the movie Narc it looks like Jason Patric and
Tom Cruise played a practical joke. At the end of the movie the actor
playing the Nick Tellis character actually switches back and forth
repeatedly between Patric and Cruise. It works because of the beard
and hat.

You can have fun debating with your friends all night which exact
shots are Patric and which are Cruise. We first see Cruise after Ray
Liotta has been interrogating Busta Rhymes and then goes out to the
car. On my DVD this is the very beginning of scene 13 at 115 minutes.
We first see Cruise, but then the next shot quickly switches back to
Patric (very tricky). After the Tellis character runs to shut the
blue door and then runs over to Busta Rhymes it is most obviously
Cruise playing the character. You can even tell by the voice when he
says the line "Look me in the eyes."

It remains Cruise for a while, but then switches back to Patric right
before the scene cuts to Liotta opening the trunk of the car (with
the line "cause he was dead").

It's Cruise again when Busta Rhymes is telling the story about the
tunnel (about 118 minutes 24 seconds), but then suddenly Patric
again.

During the scene between the two cops outside of the building it is
very difficult to tell who is playing Tellis. It seems to switch back
and forth.

At the end of the movie after Liotta dies, it is Cruise that stands
up.

The key is to watch the nose. Patric's nose is completely straight
and Cruise's has a bump. Cruise's face also has a slightly different
shape, and he is a little shorter.

Is this just a practical joke, or merely a ploy to get more people to
rent the movie? Either way have fun trying to figure it out, because
it isn't easy. I don't know if we were the first people to notice
this, but we couldn't find any other references to it on the web.

The Last Samurai's still got game.

E! Online's complete coverage of '04 Golden Globes

The Tom Cruise epic, to date enjoying something less than an epic award-show season, reasserted itself in the Oscar race Monday, nabbing a key nomination from the Producers Guild of America.

Cruise and the Samurai team, including director/writer Edward Zwick (news), are up for the guild's movie Producer of the Year honor.

Producing teams for Cold Mountain, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Mystic River and Seabiscuit are the other nominees.

With the exception of Last Samurai, each film in that group is also up for the Golden Globe for Best Drama.

The PGA Awards, handed out annually since 1990, are among the best predictors of Oscar success. Since Driving Miss Daisy was honored at the guild's first ceremony, winners of Film Producer of the Year have gone on to capture the Best Picture Academy Award 10 out of 14 times.

Last year was no exception: Chicago's Marty Richards picked up the PGA in early March and the Oscar a couple of weeks later.

PGA nominations for Cold Mountain, Master and Commander, Return of the King and Mystic River are the latest award-show plaudits for the much-honored quartet. Seabiscuit's builds on the horse-racing movie's lone, but key, Golden Globe nomination.

Up until the PGAs, The Last Samurai had been all but ignored by the season's powerbrokers, save for the American Film Institute (news - web sites), which named the period film to its year-end 10-best list.

The PGAs' seemingly uncanny ability to forecast Oscar's Best Picture winner, if not its nominees, leaves Lost in Translation, for once, at a loss.

Sofia Coppola (news)'s gentle jet-lagged comedy, up for five Globes, including Best Comedy/Musical, is arguably 2003's most-honored movie along with Mystic River. But it didn't make the cut with PGA voters.

Neither did In America. Jim Sheridan's heartbreaking, heartwarming tale of Irish immigrants in New York City, clinging to two Globe nominations, seemingly needs more momentum going into Oscar voting.

The 15th Annual PGA Awards, also honoring TV, are scheduled to be presented January 17 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

Here's a complete rundown at the nominations:

Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award (film):

  • Cold Mountain
  • The Last Samurai
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
  • Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
  • Mystic River
  • Seabiscuit

David L. Wolper Producer of the Year Award (TV movie):

  • And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself (HBO)
  • Hitler: The Rise of Evil (CBS)
  • My House in Umbria (HBO)
  • Normal (HBO)
  • The Pentagon (news - web sites) Papers (FX)

Norman Felton Producer of the Year Award (TV drama series):

  • Alias (ABC)
  • C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation (CBS)
  • Six Feet Under (HBO)
  • 24 (Fox)
  • The West Wing (NBC)

Danny Thomas (news) Producer of the Year Award (TV comedy series):

  • Everybody Loves Raymond (CBS)
  • Malcolm in the Middle (Fox)
  • Scrubs (NBC)

  • Sex and the City (HBO)
  • Will Grace (NBC)

Reality/Game/Informational Series Producer of the Year:

  • The Amazing Race 4 (CBS)
  • American Idol (Fox)
  • Biography (A&E)
  • Project Greenlight (HBO)
  • Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (Bravo)
  • Survivor: Pearl Islands (CBS)

Close Call for Cruise on 'Samurai' Set
AP
Thu Jan 15,10:43 AM ET

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada said Thursday that he came within an inch of chopping off Tom Cruise (news)'s head while filming the "Last Samurai."

Sanada said he was swinging a real sword during a fight scene with Cruise when the American film star's mechanical horse malfunctioned and didn't fall down as planned.

"Tom's neck was right in front of me, and I tried to stop swinging my sword, but it was hard to control with one hand," Sanada told reporters through a translator while promoting the film in Taipei, Taiwan.

Sanada said that when he finally stopped the sword, the blade was about half an inch from Cruise's neck.

"The film crew watching from the side all screamed because they thought Tom's head would fly off," Sanada said, using his hand to make a chopping motion to his neck.

In the movie, Cruise portrays a U.S. Civil War veteran recruited to go to Japan to train soldiers to fight samurai, warriors who protected their feudal lords.

Sanada, who plays a samurai, has starred in more than 50 films. He's also a stage actor who, in 1999, became the first Japanese actor to join the British Royal Shakespeare Company.

He won the Japanese Academy Award for best leading actor in 2002 for his role in "The Twilight Samurai."

Sanada didn't say where or when the close call took place.

Another Oscar Screener Movie Found Online
AP
Wed Jan 14, 8:41 AM ET

LOS ANGELES - A second movie sent to Oscar voters has turned up on the Internet.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (news - web sites) announced the discovery of an unauthorized Internet copy of the Tom Cruise (news) film "The Last Samurai" on Tuesday, a day after announcing a probe into an unauthorized copy of "Something's Gotta Give," starring Diane Keaton (news) and Jack Nicholson (news).

Both Internet postings were setbacks for the anti-piracy campaign by the film industry, which has estimated that unauthorizied movie copying costs it $3.5 billion a year.

The Motion Picture Association of America, which represents studios, last year banned the distribution of so-called "screener" DVDs and videotapes over concerns about bootlegging, but it partly lifted the ban after complaints from filmmakers, producers and independent production companies.

The studios changed the policy in October to allow the shipment of encoded videocassettes to Academy Award voters only. Two months later, a federal judge granted a temporary injunction blocking the screener ban after independent production companies sued, arguing the policy put them at a disadvantage for awards.

The academy said that Warner Bros. had not identified a source of the Internet copy of "The Last Samurai." The movie, an East-West culture clash set in 19th century Japan, was in the top ten at the box office last week and has earned more than $97 million since it hit theaters last month.

Actor Carmine Caridi was identified by the Los Angeles Times as the intended recipient of the "Something's Gotta Give" copy that surfaced on the Internet last week. He declined comment to the newspaper.

Malcolm Cassell, Caridi's agent, said the 69-year-old "NYPD Blue" actor had hired an attorney and was "mightily embarrassed," though "vague and not forthcoming" when asked how a copy of the movie sent to him may have surfaced online.

The 5,803 Academy members eligible to vote this year were required to sign forms promising to protect their screener tapes. About 80 percent of them returned the forms, which include a stipulation that a violation is grounds for expulsion from the academy.

Academy members include actors, producers, directors and writers as well as public relations specialists, sound technicians and other industry executives, artists and craftspeople.

The Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 27 and awards presented Feb. 29.
