Anyone can join the National Archives and have access to various
census results from 1790 through 1920(?). It may have been updated to
1930 by this stage. As a member, the National Archive will honor
requests for reels of microfilm containing responses to the census.
The results are listed by geographic location and then by surname
phonetically rather than alphabetically. In other words, for example,
Thomas and Tomas are listed together.
Results are listed in two different methods. One method is the
general format shown in Das' previous posting. The other method is
more detailed showing the individual responses given to the census
taker. These responses include more detailed information that was
deemed important at the time such number of Civil War Veterans in the
home. It also listed the address of the home and the date the
response was taken. Unfortunately, some responses have been lost. A
great number of the responses for 1910 were destroyed in a fire.
In the case of Ollie, specifically, the response was taken in May
1900 I believe or before her birthday in Oct. Comparing the 1910
information with 1900, there are some interesting differences.
In 1910, Ollie's father had passed away and her mother had remarried.
Ollie and her siblings are listed as stepchildren of Harry Van Kirk
but curiously her eldest brother is listed as James Micheal Duffy
while Ollie was listed as Olive E. Duffy. The previous census listed
Jim Duffy as Michael J. and Ollie as Olive R. The 1910 results are
consistent with later Selzick pay records for both Duffy children as
well as Ollie's contracts.
It is something that I cannot explain but tried very hard to learn
about to no avail.
