One of my Photos of Ollie came from a newspaper publicity file and had
this written on the back: "Ziegfeld Midnight Frolic" girl who sold
badges at Belmont Park yesterday for the Blue Cross Fund. (1915)
I had not heard of this organization, or why they would be selling
badges at a race track. I discovered that the Blue Cross Fund was
organized to aid sick and wounded war dogs and horses affected by the
Great War. Kennels were being attached to the Blue Cross horse hospitals
in French war zones. The French Minister of War made the appeal. The
American headquarters were at 55 East Ninety-Third St. There are so many
photos of Ollie with animals, and it speaks well of her that she would
go out to Belmont to raise money for this fund. Evidently she really did
have a heart for "these poor sufferers" as Lucy Maitland described them.
Does anyone have further information about Olive's love of horses and
dogs? Did she have pets of her own?
