048 - Jackson, Jerry, Mike & Co. - Silent Witness
Jerry listened to the police inspector before gesturing for him to
enter and closing the door behind him, the trendy Mr Mathews ignored.
Jackson's snarling continued for a few minutes and then slowly grew
quieter. Jerry had never really thought about his age, but today he
felt every year of it. Jackson had spoken to him, had incriminated
the person Jackson had called his Alpha. How could Jerry tell mike he
could speak to dogs? the notion was obsurd.
He splayed his fingers and pressed gently on the counter infront of
him before taking a deep breath to try and collect his htoughts.
"You know that people have said a canine has the equivalent mental
capacity of a two year old child. You ask me to try and envision a
child being killed and all I can see is the knife in the hands of a
child."
He made an expansive gesture encompassing all the dogs in the room.
"These creatures work alongside us, wihtout them we would not be able
to function properly. Even when we treat them so horribly they still
will do as we ask. Humans use them as tools, some of those humans use
them to kill."
Jerry looked at Mike and turned towards Jackson.
"Just come over here for a second."
Jackson did not move, but his eyes followed their every move.
"He is sedated, but he treats it like a fight, he body seems to fight
the drugs in his system fast, I odn't think this dose will wear off
for a while though."
Jackson watched as they approached and grew increasingly uneasy as
they both squated near him, the harness creaked and he let out a
warning growl. The vet laid a hand on him none the less though, every
nerve in his body was suddenly electrified and his muscles tensed, but
the next stage would not occur the tranquiliser would not allow it.
"Those sorts of reactions are drilled into a pit dog, look at this."
Gently he lifted some of the heavy fur to reveal old scars, bite
marks, scratches.
"I also felt lumps in the bone, suggesting that there might have been
bludgening trauma."
Jackson felt the hand, but it moved gently, it did not strike nor did
he attempt to re-open wounds. He remained tense until the vet removed
his hand but he stopped growling long before then. It was strangely
soothing.
"Do I think this dog is capable of killing. I odn't think that there
can be any doubt, do I think he is responsible for the killings, I
don't know, but Mike, it would be unfair to kill him if he was innocent."
Jerry stood folding his arms as if he had made his pronouncement and
now awaited for Mike's response.
