Re: [TampaFilmNetwork] Re: Icon Film Studios Web Update
Dear Joe,
thank you for the informative reply, and, by no means, would I EVER imply that your productions are cheap, amateurish horror flicks. Like I said, I am new to the industry, and by virtue of surfing the sites provided by local production companies, I just made a simple observation. (obviously a faux pas and I sincerely apologize !!!) I would never seek to offend anyone, believe me.
I wonder if anyone ever tried to revive the silent movies that the New Port Richey area was famous for many years ago? It was an old haunt of Charlie Chaplin and the like. I and a fellow art friend have tossed around the idea of starting a competition for indie film companies to make silent movies again. It would put a lot of focus on the musical score (involving local musicians) and the individual viewer using their own creativity to mentally write the story. Do you think anyone would be interested in trying that
genre?? You seem to know your business...I am interested in your feedback.
I will tell you that the average income in the Land O'Lakes area (where I live) (yeah yeah, no laughing...major suburbia) is $75,000 (about 23,000 over the national average) and the educational status is also above the national rankings in college degree holders. To me , that screams... I have more money than I know what to do with it, I may be a little smarter than the average bear, and I need some entertainment. We are currently surrounded by a whole lotta nothing and baseball and soccer fields. Have I painted you an interesting picture yet??
I look forward to your e-mail. I will tell you that I have a meeting tomorrow with people here in Pasco county who are spearheading an effort to erect an Arts concourse and trying to encompass all of the art mediums in one fell swoop.Hmm, sound interesting??
I don't think we all are. Although the horror genre seems to be the most popular in the area it is also internationally accepted. Having shot movies here in the states and in England I know for a fact that horror is in
wide commodity. Horror is the number one genre in the world; from Japan to Australia. Just a matter of fact.
Making an indie romantic comedy is fun yes; I've made three, but they do not sell on our level. Drama's; forget it. No one wants to watch indie film actor so and so battle it out with whoever over their whatever. So, as indie film makers we tend to lean towards the horror genre. It's fun, not so easy, and well excepted.
But, if you're interested in finding work there are several projects over the summer here in Tampa and none of them are horror. From Pete and Paul Guzzo's 1940's Mafia short to Cubicle 3's Series "Going Nowhere". I myself start shooting a crime noir style film in September. We are trying to pull ourselves out of the horror hole, but in the end we've all made horror movies, I am no exception. Rock on zombies!

I hope some of this helps and doesn't make all of us look like cheap horror amateurs.

Chris,
I am new to the film industry, and want to work with local productions for props and accessories. I just am curious, why are the local idie film makers only producing from the horror genre?? It seems very esoteric and streamlined for a narrow market.
