There has apparently been an agency in Austin that has absconded with
talent
pay. If you have signed with an agent but have NOT received money due
you
and can not reach your agent, please contact the Texas Department of
Licensing and Regulation at 512.463.6599. ALL licensed/bonded talent
agents
will have an insurance bond on file with the state of Texas. You MUST
have
documentation proving that an agent owes you money for a job. Make sure
you
keep all names, contact numbers, releases, all paper work that you've
gotten
on bookings, etc, on file.

If you receive work and compensation from any industry castings through
any
resource, please remember to pay agent fee to your agent (only if they
are licensed/bonded). They work for you whether you're making money for
them or not. You are never to pay commission to anyone who does NOT have
a license and bond with the state of Texas. This includes all managers
and talent agents who
are working under such titles but may not be registered with the state
as such. They are collecting illegally if they are not licensed.
Agents act as fiduciaries for actors and are regulated by each state
they work in. If you need to check on an agents listing with the
state, please refer to the website below:
http://www.license.state.tx.us/LicenseSearch/

Click on "Inquire by License Type"
Select "Talent Agents". This list will give you a complete list of
Talent Agents, what their license number is and when they expire. It is
not an alphabetical listing. Continue clicking on "Next" to access all
agencies.

Click on the website to verify a talent agency's license. They are not
in alphabetical order, but in numerical order of license number.

The "Texas Models & Talent Forum" (aka, "TM&T"), an online bulletin
board and
message posting system, has just expanded! Already the premiere online
Modeling and Photography "forum" in Texas with over 1250 registered
members,
we are adding a more intense focus on providing this same great free
resource
to the acting and filmmaking community in Central Texas as well. The
site is
NOT intended as a casting notice resource, but rather as a place to
share
information, communicate and network, and meet others with the same
interests
and goals.

This notice is to announce that we have just added the following three
new
message posting forums:

  - ACTORS AND ACTING
  - FILMMAKING AND PRODUCTION
  - WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES

Actors, Filmmakers, Producers, Directors, Crew, MUA's, Acting Coaches
and
Schools... including amateur, professional, and student... are
encouraged to
come take advantage of this expanding resource and service at "Texas
Models &
Talent Forum."

We are most excited about the new "Workshops and Classes" section, since
many
of our already 1250+ members are actors and models would benefit from
additional acting coaching and training. These three new "acting and
filmmaking" catagories are not populated with messages yet since they
were
just launched today, but we hope to see the same spirit of discussion
and
sharing as we've experienced in the other catagories that are more model
and
photography focused.

Because we welcome people OF ALL AGES, the site is tightly monitored
and 'policed' in order to keep everything on a relatively G-Rated venue.

Membership is absolutely FREE... but you do need to REGISTER on the site
first
before you can view the more than 20 active forum catagories. The
registration process provides a small precaution in keeping the site
clean,
focused, and professional minded.

THIS IS A GREAT PLACE FOR PARENTS OF ASPIRING ACTORS AND FILMMAKERS TOO!

A lot of time, money, and resources have been invested to make this site
as
popular online in Central Texas as it is today. Constantly evolving to
bring
more resources to you, the site is located at this URL:

    http://www.austinmodelsandtalent.com/forum/index.php

Please Note:
The "Texas Models & Talent Forum" is sponsored by the Austin Models &
Talent
Agency (Texas License #TALAGY00000439), but it is open to individuals of
any
agency [or non agency] affliation. We currently have healthy
participation
from talent with various agency representations involved. Even Agents
are
encouraged to come participate, view, and keep up with the "goings on"
of
models, actors, and filmmakers in Texas.

Thanks and we hope that the new film and acting focus will add to
benefit the
Texas talent community..!

ON LOCATION for August 2004

Have our films gone to New Mexico? Study looks at how to keep projects

By Joe O'Connell

Is the heart of the Texas film industry still beating? Yes, but you may
detect a
faint murmur that has Austin and state officials stocking the medicine
cabinet.

City leaders are expected to release their study of the local film
industry on
Aug. 16, and the state is mulling incentives to pull in more big studio
projects.

First the hot news: Matt Damon is set to portray Lance Armstrong in a
biopic
expected to shoot in 2005. Meanwhile, the Platinum Dunes folks behind
the
Austin-shot remake of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" plan to make a
prequel. New Line recently bought more rights for the 1974 original from
Tobe
Hooper, Kim Henkel and attorney Robert Kuhn and set "The Longest Yard"
scripter Sheldon Turner to work on a story.

Tommy Lee Jones has opened preproduction offices at Austin Studios for
"The Three Burials of Malquiades Estrada," a western that will shoot on
Jones'
Van Horn ranch, in Odessa and in the Big Bend this fall. The production
office
originally opened in San Antonio but moved to the Capital City to be
nearer to
the state's main crew base. Jones will direct, star in and produce the
story by
Guillermo Arriaga ("Amores Perros") about a ranch hand trying to fulfill
a
promise to bury an old friend in his Mexican hometown.

Plus, Robert Rodriguez is gearing up an Austin shoot this fall for "The
Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl," about which few details have
been
released except that it is a family film and potentially a return to
3-D.

Actor and former pro skateboarder Jason Lee is turning director and
currently
casting "Seymour Sycamore, Margaret Orange" for a Texas shoot this fall
(no
word on which city). Lee, of Kevin Smith's "Chasing Amy" and "Mallrats,"

apparently has Smith on board as an executive producer for the quirky
tale of
two 12-year-olds.

And there remains an outside shot that Richard Linklater will bring to
Austin
his next directing effort: "The Smoker," starring Natalie Portman as a
young
woman with designs on wedding her teacher, Owen Wilson. But, surprise,
Canada is a better bet.

What do three of these four projects have in common? Texas homeboys. San

Saba resident Jones recently threw his weight to move the comedy "Cheer
Up" here, and Linklater and Rodriguez have long shown a preference for
staying home with the armadillos.

But money talks, and Louisiana and New Mexico are waving a wad of cash
toward Hollywood and getting takers. Disney's "Glory Road," the story of
how
in 1966 Don Haskins of Texas Western (now the University of Texas at El
Paso) led the first all-black college basketball team to an NCAA
championship, will be in El Paso briefly. But most filming will be in
New
Orleans, with plenty of Austin crew folk crossing the border as well. By
the
way, Ben Affleck is out and Josh Lucas is on board to portray Haskins.

Over in New Mexico, former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin and University of

Oklahoma alumnus Brian Bosworth have joined Adam Sandler and Chris
Rock in "The Longest Yard" cast. About 35 percent of the comedy remake
about a prison football team is being shot at a former penitentiary near
Santa
Fe, N.M., with the rest in Los Angeles.

"Both of these states are really trying to buy their way into this
business that
we've spent some 30 years to grow," said Tom Copeland, head of the Texas

Film Commission.

They're doing it through incentives. New Mexico offers loans and
actually
invests state funds in films, while Louisiana gives state income tax
credits.
Copeland says 12 states currently offer some form of incentive, and the
Texas
Legislature will likely consider joining that group during the next
regular
session. A similar effort failed last session in light of an ultra-tight
budget
forecast. Texas currently offers sales tax exemptions to filmmakers.

"We've got to get in there and start participating or we're going to
lose this,"
Copeland said.

The Austin City Council commissioned a 100-day study of what it can do
to
promote the local film industry and is poised to release its findings.

"Now I'm confident with the results of the gap analysis study the
council
commissioned four months ago we'll have the facts we need to determine
how local government can further develop its partnership with this
dynamic
local industry," Mayor Will Wynn said.

Why the local interest? Perhaps a realization that Austin is now the
home of
Texas film. The state estimates 2003 Texas film and television projects
had a
combined budget of about $229 million. Austin claimed just less than
$200
million of that figure, almost half of that from "The Alamo." It's
conservatively
estimated that 50 percent of a film's budget goes directly into the
local
economy.

Copeland's biggest concerns are the mobility and fickleness of the film
business, and the possibility that Texas crews will start migrating to
our
neighboring states to follow the work. Or when Texas crews are, in a
sense,
training newcomers to the field, our neighbors could soon boast their
own film
pros.

And don't forget Canada, which has used its weak dollar and financial
incentives to lasso a big chunk of the U.S. film industry. Terry
Gilliam's
"Tideland" tells of the bizarre world of an 11-year-old girl who talks
to her
Barbie doll heads in rural Texas. It'll lens in Saskatchewan. Howe about
a
television film titled "Miss Texas"? It'll shoot in Vancouver.

So when Damon stars in the Armstrong biopic next year, will he bicycle
the
streets of Montreal or Albuquerque, N.M., instead of Austin? When the
"Chainsaw" sequel gears up, will Bourbon Street fill in for Sixth
Street?

Let's hope not.

ON LOCATION appears the first Friday of each month in the Austin
American-
Statesman. Got a tip about the Texas film industry? Send it to

got this from linda mcalister. (thanks) if all of you write your state
reps, it may help

Texas is getting left in the dust. I continue to forward all info
pertaining
to film legislature from surrounding states. Louisiana is seeking techs
from
TEXAS to assist them in their film production. Maybe if our State Reps
and
the Texas Film Commission receive massive quantities of emails and notes

from us, they'll take heed. It is NOT up to the governor alone!! Start
with
the reps and lets get a bill authored.

Please forward this note with a plea to your rep to assist us in film
incentive and/or funding legislation. We have some great incentives and
exemptions in place. Texas Film Commission is aware of this.

Start writing!!

I am completing a book for Rowman & Littlefield with the working title
"A
Movie-Lover's Tour Guide to Texas," and am eager to include as many
specific filming
locations as possible. I've been in contact with various C&V folks all
over the state,
and one of them suggested that you might be willing to help me collect
the information
I need.

I have organized the book to coincide with TXDoT's regions of the state,
so each
chapter deals with movies shot in one of those regions: Hill Country,
South Texas
Plains, Gulf Coast, etc.

Greetings to all Actors, Directors, Producers etc.

On November 20, 2004 there will be a film festival held in Tyler,
Texas. The
Festival is called "No-Name" Digital Cinema Festival. Student entries
will
begin running at ten in the morning, a break in the afternoon will be
filled
with production discussions and demonstrations, professional entries
will
start at seven in the evening.
This is our second year with this festival, and as such we are still
supporting one screen for one day. For that reason, we are limiting our
entries to shorts, as in five minutes or less. If you have a project
that
can be considered a short but runs over five minutes, let us know and
we'll
adapt to that on a case-by-case basis. It was not a problem last year
(we
had some really fun stuff that was only :30 each) and we anticipate no
problems this year. Still -- this is about the films themselves and not
about us, our festival, or a bunch of mandatory rules. We will try to
adjust
as needed.
Such rules as we have are simple -- there is one content category
(wide
open) and few content guidelines (no 'X,' and please, try to keep a lid
on
the gratuitous violence). We don't have any political or social agendas,
and
films that do will be taken on an equal footing with those that do not.
This
festival is a not-for-profit celebration of the art of visual
storytelling,
and as such, projects that are thoughtful or provocative in a fun sort
of
way tend to show well, but again -- there are no real content
limitations.
We also have no limits on the number of entries per person, nor is there
any
cost to attendees - we can seat 200 per showing, and it's first come,
first
serve.
Entry fees are $15.00 per project for 'students" (anyone under 21) and

$25.00 for everyone else. Deadline for judging is November 1, winners
will
be announced at the show. If you run late and your project is wonderful
we
will probably still show it in a 'non-judged entry' session, which is
where
we show projects made by people who were ineligible for entry due to
some
sort of connection with the festival itself. There will be cash and
merchandise prizes awarded to the winners of each category,
and judges comment sheets will be returned to the entrant along with
their
entry. Judge's decisions are, of course, final.
Entries will be accepted in digital form, and we are (alas) limited
to
NTSC-SD. We prefer DVD, we also accept DV and a variety of linear tape
formats -- Betacam SP, etc. If you've got a problem with conversion,
production,
completion, or anything else for that matter, let us know by mid-October
and we'll try
to help. We can't promise anything, but we'll do our best. Entry forms
should be
going up
on our new festival website fairly soon, (nonamefilmfest.com) but in
the meantime,
entries can be mailed to:
                                  the No-Name Digital Cinema Festival
                                             C/O MaxxEfx Video
                                          719 W. Front, Suite 20
                                           Tyler, Texas -- 75702
Personal checks are fine for the entry fees, and we will acknowledge
your
entry on receipt. And that, in a conversational nutshell, is our
festival.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us either
by
email or by phone -- myself at 903-595-6380 or Chad Jarrett at
903-595-0802.

          Thanks Again -- Stephen Self

Also, We are also trying to start a Film-Maker's Association. We want to
bring together aspiring actors, writers, musicians, designers, and of
course production gear-heads (such as ourselves) together in a friendly,
cooperative
group that can work together to put out some fun stuff. Please -- give
us any thoughts you have on the subject. Anyone who is interested,
please
feel free to contact Willie Edmond @ lonestarfilm@....

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

THE LEGEND OF GHOSTWOLF*S GOLD will debut at The 11th Annual CineSol
Latin
Film Festival, 11:40 a.m,. Saturday Sept. 25. at Cine El Rey theatre in
McAllen, Texas.

Austin independent filmmaker, Shane Scott, will premiere his new
action/adventure movie at CineSol Latin Film Festival, an event that
showcases the very best in Latino American Film and Video creation.
Shot
entirely in central Texas, THE LEGEND OF GHOSTWOLF*S GOLD features top
performances by a bilingual Austin area cast, including Hugo Perez,
Tomas
Salas, Marita de la Torre and Joseph Fotinos. Set in Coahuila, Mexico
and
South Texas in the late 19th Century, The Legend of Ghostwolf*s Gold is
an
unusual cross-genre tale, that is part western, part ghost story, and
part
action-adventure, directed at family audiences (PG-13 level and up).

Ghostwolf*s Gold is Scott*s feature debut. His eight-minute short, The
Scab,
appeared at the Austin Film Festival a few years ago, and can be seen
at
IFilms.com (a Web-streaming movie site). Scott has also produced the
Austin
Cable Access Channel Friday night horror movie showcase The Midnight
Shadow
Show (featuring Joseph Fotinos as Dr. Griffin) for many years.

Scott wrote, produced, financed, directed, shot, and edited The Legend
of
Ghostwolf*s Gold, himself (with help from family and friends), as a
low-budget digital video production photographed in multiple locations
in
the Austin area, (including a mini-makeshift film studio built in his
German
automobile repair shop in South Austin). Scott received guidance
during the
production from mentors like the late Robert Burns, production designer
on
the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and local writer and filmmaker
Sidney
Brammer (with whom Scott studied directing and writing at Alleywood
Studios,
a small conservatory in South Austin that offers classes in acting,
directing, and writing). Scott hopes to sell the film to a cable
distributor
and foreign theatrical markets, after establishing it on the film
festival
circuit.

Ghostwolf*s Gold beautiful soundtrack features works by Alfredo Rolando
Ortiz, a Cuban-born classical composer and world-class Paraguayan
harpist,
who recorded the symphonic parts of the soundtrack with the El Paso
Symphony
Orchestra. The film also showcases original compositions and harp solo
work
by Ortiz, and incidental ?saloon music* written and performed by Texas
border rock legend Joe ?King* Carrasco with singing sisters Cenida and
Consuela Robles. (Carrasco also appears in a small role as a
gunslinger, and
parts of the film were shot in his adobe hacienda near Lake Buchanan.)

Synopsis: A dark legend unfolds through the vivid recollections of an
old
wanderer in late 19th century Coahuila, Mexico. Befriended by a rural
Mexican family, the old man recounts to them a forgotten Indian legend
and
the story of Jalisco, a Mexican expatriate running with a band of
renegade
Union Army soldiers in post-Civil War Texas. Obsessed with finding lost
Confederate Army gold, Jalisco and his ruthless companions learn,
instead,
the high cost of greed from the terrifying guardian of the lost Tonkawa
gold
mine, while local settlers wage a frenzied battle for supremacy against
the
renegade soldiers, murderously protective natives, and the savage
forces of
nature.

For more information about the film contact: Shane Scott, 512/442-5182.

The Festival: The traveling Cinesol Latin Film Festival travels

the Latino community. This year*s special guest is film star Esai
Morales
(La Bamba, Mi Familia, NYPD Blue). Cinesol supports the work of
emerging
and established filmmakers by enhancing public awareness of their
artistic
endeavors, and by encouraging dynamic and long-lasting community

directly
to their prospective communities. This year's premiere weekend will

SAGINDIE ANNOUNCES WORKSHOP FOR TEXAS FILMMAKERS

Dallas (September 19, 2004) ? Screen Actors Guild (SAG), in conjunction
with SAGIndie, the guild’s low-budget outreach program, presents a
producers’ workshop on Tuesday, October 5 in Austin, TX under the
direction of Houston and Dallas/Ft. Worth Executive Director Linda
Dowell.

SAGIndie reaches out to thousands of independent filmmakers each year
through event sponsorships, panels, receptions and advertising. SAG’s
five Low Budget Agreements carry various incentives and provisions which
make the union’s talent pool available to projects of any scale. The
SAGIndie workshop, tailored for student filmmakers to producers with
budgets up to $2 million, guides filmmakers through the signatory
process. “This is a great opportunity for filmmakers to learn how easy
it can be to work with SAG,” says Dowell. “A great number of Austin
producers realized that using our members at 100 percent deferred or
reduced salaries not only brings prestige to their projects, but a level
of professionalism that results in a better final production.”

The workshop will be held from 6:30 ? 8:30 p.m. October 5 at 100
Congress Center (Congress and 2nd Street), Floor 21, in Austin and is
free to all participants. To R.S.V.P., please call 800/SAG-0767,

Unregistered Houston Talent Agency Fined $15,000

The Texas Commission of Licensing and Regulation has ordered the
operator of an unregistered Houston talent agency to pay a $15,000
penalty for purporting to represent clients without first obtaining a
state registration.

The commission imposed the administrative penalty on Oscar Valdez, who
operated the company, Starmaker International, from an office at 5401
Chimney Rock in Houston. Starmaker International has ceased operations.

The commission's order covers the period between March and May of
2004. Valdez operated Starmaker International, charging clients for
representation, promising to obtain employment for the clients artists
or models, without registering with the state and posting a required
surety bond.

Talent agencies that operate in Texas and charge a fee to find
employment for artists and models are required to first register with
the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). The agencies
also are required to post a $10,000 surety bond, or deposit $10,000 in
cash, which is held to satisfy claims by clients who are not properly
paid by the agency.

"The state requires talent agencies to register so that we can
protect artists from unscrupulous operators who would prey on their
dreams," said William Kuntz, TDLR's executive director. "The law
also requires them to post a bond so money is available for the artists
if the agent fails to honor his or her financial obligations."

The commission's order demands payment of the penalty within 30 days.
If Valdez fails to pay the penalty or make arrangements to pay, the
order will be referred to the Office of the Attorney General for
collection.

To receive news and updates on the talent agent program, or any of the
programs TDLR administers, sign up for TDLR's email subscription
