WELCOME TO THE SIR DIRK BOGARDE group. This is a cordial group for the discussion of the performances and written works of Dirk Bogarde, one of the most important stars of 20th century British cinema who went on to become a major actor in European film. He ruled British screens in the '50s as Rank's top star and Britain's biggest box office draw. For five years, fans voted him best actor, with Picturegoer magazine giving him its Annual Award three years running.
From the '60s on, Bogarde daringly shed his matinée-idol image for more complex, challenging roles in Britain and abroad working with acclaimed directors Joseph Losey, Luchino Visconti, Alain Resnais, Liliana Cavani, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Bertrand Tavernier.
Nominated six times for the BAFTA Award, Sir Dirk was awarded a BAFTA for Best British Actor in "The Servant" (1963) and again in 1965 for Best British Actor in "Darling." BAFTA gave him its highest honour, the Life Achievement Award.
Dirk was appointed Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres,
promoted to Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, awarded an Hon. D. Litt. from the University of St. Andrews, a second from the University of Sussex, and knighted in 1992.
In a second career, he wrote and illustrated 15 best-selling works, ; essays, introductions; revisions of film scripts; a screenplay "May We Borrow Your Husband? which he starred in. For 9 years, he wrote articles for The Telegraph, Times, and others collected in "For the Time Being". Sir Dirk died 8th May, 1999, in London.
