Mumbai, May 5 (ANI): The images that normally conjure up in the mind
when one thinks of a hospital are sombre faces of the medical and para
medical staff, strong medicinal smells and much more.
But now , there is something different that has surfaced in Mumbai.
Inspired by the Bollywood flick "Shwas", the paediatric ward of B Y L
Nair Hospital, which is owned by the Bombay Municipal Corporation, has
given itself a new cheerful, sporty and colourful look.
The walls surrounding the ward have been painted with jazzy colours
and cartoon figures has been drawn on the wall.
The new look is inspired by the theme of 'Shwas', a Marathi film,
which got nomination in the small film category at the Oscar awards.
The hospital authorities feel the refreshing look of the ward will
ensure a quick recovery of children admitted in the hospital. The film
has also successfully made its impact on society.
"Generally films are made from issues taken up from the society. But
this time, it's vice versa, society has taken inspiration from the
film," said Sandeep Sawant, Director and Producer of the film 'Shwas'.
"This is a good effort, but it must be expanded to the adult wards
too, with the right combination of colours. But what is most important
is that there must be a good inflow of antibiotics and emergency
drugs," said Dr. Himanshu Kelkar of the BYL Nair Hopsital.
The young patients are grinning with glee at the cartoons on the walls
and the rainbow-coloured curtains, which are giving them hopes for a
positive future.
"After seeing these cartoons and toys I feel I will get well soon,"
said Saroj Yadav, a child patient.
It might be a small step towards reshaping the impression of the
hospitals but the step will definitely go a long way in changing
patient's perception regarding a hospital. (ANI)
does anyone know where i can obtain the soundtrack to this lovely
film? if not the soundtrack, then does anyone have the mp3 to the
haunting song played during the movie? thanks all!

I attended a screening in Washington, DC this weekend, and the response
was really nice. A large attendance, and the presence of Arun Nalawade
as well as the other producers made it an occasion to remember.
I also recollect seeing a local TV station capturing the ambience and
taking interviews right after the show.
All the best to Shwaas for the 25th! :)

Bolly film's road to the Oscars is a fairytale..., 7.1.05
BOLLYWOOD'S last attempt to win an Oscar, Lagaan, involved villagers working
together to
beat a British Empire team at cricket.
But now the villagers have turned their back on cricket and started raising
money instead
to give India's latest bid a chance of glory.
Shwaas is the unanimous choice as India's entry to the Oscars this year.
The drama is based on a true story about a grandfather's desperate attempt to
show his
grandson the world before the child loses his sight.
When it was announced that Shwaas was going to Hollywood, a great obstacle the
director
Sandeep Sawant and his team faced was financing an Oscar campaign.
Money came from sources that ranged from members of the public, film stars and
businesses.
Sawant said: "With everyone from small villagers to Amitabh Bachchan donating
money for
its Oscar bid, the critically acclaimed film has scooped a truck-load of awards
and
captured the imagination of an entire nation."
It is Sawant's directorial debut, having worked as a counsellor before turning
his skills to
the silverscreen.
He said: "I am really grateful to all of them. Without their support and wishes
it would not
be possible to reach where we are."
Another challenge was adjusting to the way cinema and marketing works in
Hollywood.
The final challenge was to reach American audiences and those voting for the
Oscars.
He said: "We have appointed a PR agent in LA for our publicity campaign. She is
handling
the press and publicity in Hollywood.
"Also, we are doing many screenings all around North America among and with the
help of
the Indian Community to gain more publicity and funds. The film will be shown at
two
different film festivals. One was at the South Asian
International Film Festival in New York last month. Another will be at Palm
Springs
International Film Festival in Palm Springs, California this month. Also there
was a preview
run of seven days at the Imaginasian theatre in New York last month."
Sawant added that a nomination would be a great achievement for the Indian film
industry.
Although he has a number of ideas for his next film, he has no time to think
about it
because he is focused on Shwaas and getting an Oscar nomination.
He said: "I was doing theatre since 1987-88. Later I felt that my medium of
expression
was through camera not theatre. After that I came across this story and I
realised it's
potential to be a feature film.
"About four years back Madhavi Gharpure had given me few of her stories to read.
Among
those, I liked the thought in this story.
"When I asked her about it I found out that this story was based on a real life
incidence of
well-known oncosurgeon Dr Shailesh Puntambekar. I went to Dr Puntambekar. He
narrated
me the whole incidence. By then I had decided to make a film based on this
incidence."
Apart from working with a low budget, the biggest challenge that Sawant faced
was
handling the delicate subject matter and maintaining the simplicity and the
human spirit
instead of making the pain larger than life.
"This was very difficult as it is really easy for this story to become a
melodrama. Also
financing for a regional film is always a big block. But we managed with the
help of many
friends. There is no single financier for this film. We collected money from a
few of our
friends. Having a low budget and not compromising the quality is again a
difficult
situation to deal with."
Clearly attached to the subject, the director spoke to Eastern Eye from Los
Angeles, where
he is promoting the film to voters. He is adamant that when he started making
the Marathi
film, his intention was to reach an international level in quality and the
story.
That is why he did not compromise in any way when he was making the film,
despite it
having a low budget. "I knew that this is going to be a good film. Whether it
will win all the
awards or not, we did not know.
He adds:"It is like this; you work on something you know that it is of good
quality and you
have belief in the film. But what you don't know is other people's efforts.
There might be
people who have better film than you."
The heart-warming story is about the struggle of grandfather, who tries to give
the best to
his ailing grandson who is about to lose his eyesight. It is about keeping a
positive
approach towards life even in a no win situation like cancer.
Sawant's beautiful masterpiece has been brought to life with unknown actors who
come
from regional Marathi theatre.
"Grandfather Vichare played by Arun Nalawade, the little kid Parashuraam played
by
Ashwin Chitale, the onco-surgeon by Sandeep Kulkarni, medical social worker by
Amruta
Subhash, Divakar by Ganesh Manjrekar, the mother by Ashwini Giri. They all have
done a
great job in this film.
"They all had to undergo the same research process as me by visiting hospitals
and
support groups.
"The mother had a training session in Konkan (the village) about the daily
chores. The kid
had almost four months' training. In this period I became a good friend of his
and
observed him, his reactions and way of thinking."
Sawant thinks the simplicity and honesty of the film is what has appealed to
audiences and
critics. He finishes off the interview by telling Eastern Eye what he thinks
makes a good
film: "A good worthwhile concept, a good technical team that is ready to give
its best,
thorough and honest efforts, good amount of research, no compromise on quality
and the
soul of the film, no commercial success formulae."
One way we proactively can do is we can start looking for places where polls/votes are conducted and vote there. But this is a secondary effort. Major effort would be if you are willing to volunteer, you can start one on one communication with the review writer and present him better picture. Most online reviewers have their email ids.
Also as I mentioned you must start interacting one on one with local press. Since this needs to be co-ordinated effort, please let us know about your efforts so if someone else has any leads/info they can help with you.
We seriously need some proactive volunteering now. And this is one good place to start. If you want we can have a predtermined time yahoo chat session, where all of us can convene and discuss about overall volunteering direction we should take for next 3-4 crucial weeks.
I've heard from many ppl that not many good reviews are available
online... most that are there potray a negative emotion.
I've heard the same abt the official website. I tried to logon but
apprently the site is down. can some of the web developers look into
this ?
Also can some of us collect the good reviews from the ppl who were
for the screenings and post them on the website?
another major concern is the influx of pirated cds/vhs in New Jersey
area. Any thoughts on how to combat this situation ? This is
important since a majority of the screenings on the east coast are
not until the mid of next month.
-soumitra
We should start asking our friends to go and vote. Of course it may not do major impact on visibility, why not try every possible way to get people interested.
Meanwhile was wondering if all of us would be able to get some information about respective local press. For example if anyone of you know anyone in local press (in US), please give the details. For example I am a Los Angeles resident, and I know a friend who has a reporter friend in LA Times, or something like that.
I am sure the professional PR team will be taking care of major press coverage, but it will also help us a lot if we can get something published in local news. If your city/region is forthcoming community screening, please make sure you contact Press guys well in advance. I would request in case you want to volunteer to invite press, and promote in press(news papers, local channels), please mail me ASAP.

For a film to enter golden globe, it needs to have a run of 3 weeks
anywhere in North America. We dont fulfill that.

Did 'Shwaas' entered in Golden Globe competition? Five foreign films
that are nominated for Golden Globe are also contesting in Oscar. Out
of that only one has been distributed widely right now ('Motorcycle
Diaries' from Brazil). I am in Charleston SC on a busienss visit and
going to see it tomorrow as it is shown in theatres here.
How is the campaign for 'Shwaas' going? I heard a PR firm was hired?

One more thing, Prasad. There is no link to Shwaas movie, or
screenings on MMBayarea site as well. http://www.mmbayarea.org
I think it's very important to have it there. Shilpa may know if
Calaa is going to ask mm to do that. You can also write to
mmba@...
I also know commitee members with whom I can talk. But I do not know
what it is the proper way of approaching the mm ( Through CALAA or
otherwise)

I will check with the flyer availability for download (There is one created by Calaa, and will ask Shilpa/Mukund to upload in files area).
The best case would be contact me / Mukund on email and let us know where you can post ditribute. Cause printable flyer is one thins, where Calaa has also made some posters with screenings info. So at major places that will be way to go.
Please let me know your / your friends' availability for this task on weekend.
Thanks

Yes, having 2 screenings here on separate days really helps. For example, we live in san jose. My husband will be attending the fremont screening whereas I will go for the san jose screening, so that my daughter is taken care of meanwhile. It really works out that way.
Let me know which flyer I can use. if you can email me one that would be great. I personally can take care of having it posted in the local establishments in blossom valley, evergreen, willow glen and evergreen area. Many of my marathi friends did not know about the screening till I told them. I can ask some other friends to post it in Fremont and Sunnyvale shops etc.
Calaa may have already done this, but I think if MM Bay area sends an email to their maling list we can reach maximum no of marathi people in bay area. At least I haven't received any
such email of mmbayarea and I know that I am on their mailing list.
BTW, the message I sent yesterday got posted today after 24 hrs!

Charging up people to go to screenigs is most important, and that's what we all should be doing relentlessly.
There are common issues which people may bring up to attend the screenings, and all of us have to convince them that it is not just a mere entertainment, and everyone needs to do some out of way type help. In this case adjusting some schedules, making arrangements for baby-sitting etc, requesting/sponsoring non-marathi/indian friend to wacth the screenings is very important way of volunteering and that's how we should convey to most marathi friends.
Just as an example.. Fortunately bay area has 2 dates of screenings, so in many cases families can take truns to baby sit, car pool with prior planing. that way more people can attend.
I also was wondering can we get more help in Bay area to put up screenings posters/flyers in local prominent indian and other cultural establishments? Please email me ASAP, if anyone of your freinds is interested to help in this way.
Thanks

Just a feedback..I am looking forward to the bay area screening. I have all of my marathi friends buying tickets for the screening. But it is kind of hard to get non-marathi friends do the same. One of the factor is the tickets in bay area are $15 per person, where as everywhere else it is $10. So I find that non-maharashtrian people are a bit hesitant to pay that for a marathi movie (especially those with families).
