Our meeting on 10-9-09 enjoyed the first look at the video shots on 9-12-09 taken at the rural cemetary in Stockton, site of the statue of Reuel Gridley. Despite the lightening, thunder and rain the shots turned out well thanks to Erick and Bosko and the Deprato family. As noted in the previous missive to members, what is needed to complete the "Midas Sack" will be shots of Gridley with his sack of flour in front of the saloon in Austin. Jeff Thompson, are you still willing to play Gridley? If so, can you let Erick know what days and times you would be available.
We are asked to submit our favorite movies on DVDs to a group called Movies for "The Love of It". I like the following: Night on the River, A Time to Run, The Switch 1 and 2, and Moving Minnie. Also the movie by Duke but I can't recall the name of it. Help?? Let us know your favorites, remembering that the deadline for submission is Nov 1, 2009. We're not assured how many, if any, will be shown. The notice is copied below.
And please calendar Thursday November 12, 2009 for the next SAMM meeting.
Bob and Sue White
Dear Sue and Bob,
Melinda Stone (USF) and Kathy Geritz (Berkeley Film Archive) are planning a new presentation of movies made by amateur clubs at a "For the Love of It" event next February. Even though most of the Northern California movie clubs are now defunct, they feel there are a lot of movies made during the last 10 years or so that would be of interest to fans in the Bay Area. I know that the movies made by the Sacramento club and screened at Inter Club Contests are superior examples of the art, and I would like to offer them to Melinda and Kathy as candidates for screening at this event. Do you have DVD copies of such movies that you would be willing to put on the program. Please send me a list of titles and running times as soon as possible. The deadline for setting the program is Nov. 1.
By the way, thank you for the information about the ABC Cinema Digital Film Course. It sounds interesting. I note that you have sent the information to Frank Swanson and Bill Mannion of the Viewfinders Digital Video Club (in Cupertino), that is the only surviving amateur movie club in the Bay Area. I'm sure that they will respond to your message. When I see them, I will remind them of this issue.
Thanks for the news. We've set reminders to watch it.

Dear SCCA Affiliate Club Representative,
Below is your link to the July 2009 issue of Panorama magazine.
Once again we ask that you forward the link to your membership
as a way of making them more aware of SCCA activities. We do
appreciate your help.
This is an important issue, containing four big pages of details of
the 2009 Convention, September 12 to 13th in Ottawa. Included also,
for paid up member clubs who will not be attending the convention,
is a "Proxy" form for return to Carolyn Briggs. (Page 15) It is important that
we receive these forms in order to carry out our Annual General Meeting
Rick Daprato phoned today saying that he and his family will be on vacation for the month of August 2009. His first available date will be Saturday, September 12, 2009. This should give us time to prepare for the shoot which would be, if all goes well, at the rural cemetary in Stockton. I told Rick SAMM would pay gas and lunch expenses. At our August meeting on the second Thurday, 8-13-09, Coloma Community Center, 46th and T Streets, 7PM in the Jamestown Room. we can find out who can /will do what re. the shooting of "The Midas Sack of Flour"
Phone or e-mail us if you can't make the August meeting. Thanks,
I just received this e-mail today, 7-13-09. Either somebody's clock
is set wrong or
their e-mail finally made it to the server.
A while back a friend and myself were shooting some photos at the
cemetery on
Broadway and some gentleman came out and asked what we were doing.
He told
us that we had to have a permit to shoot photos there, had to do with
privacy. He
gave us some city address where we could get a permit. We were
non-commercial.
We just packed up and left.
Just a head's up.
I would like to get involved with the group but have been so busy.
I'm about to leave
for Cozumel, Mexico, one of my hobbies is u/w photography, still and
video. I just
got new u/w video lights, have to try them out!

Access Sacramento and The Tenth Annual "Place Called Sacramento Film Festival" invite all local folks interested in local filmmaking to come to the Coloma Community Center at 6:00 PM May 20, 2009. Local, short 10 minute scripts have being judged by local filmmakers and the top ten have been selected for production.
On May 20, the ten selected writers/producers will introduce themselves and invite your participation. Experience and inexperienced actors, directors, producers, production, post-production. location scouts, and "craft services" are invited to attend and select which volunteer team you would like to help. Introduce yourself and maybe you will be "cast" or selected to help produce a film to be seen on the Big Screen at the Crest Theater October 4 and posted "on-demand" at www.AccessSacramento.org
Bring your business cards, resum es, head shots, etc. if you have them but they are not necessary. This is NOT a traditional "stand-in- line audition". Plan to attend from the very beginning (6:00 PM sharp) to hear the scripts and then introduce yourself to the filmmakers of your choosing.
Join the fun this summer and help make a movie about your hometown. All ages are invited. Invite your friends and family - we expect to see more than 200 people but hundreds more can be accommodated. A ccess Sacramento builds community by making movies - only in a place called Sacramento.

May Meeting on Thursday 5-14-09 Coloma Coimmunity Center, 46th and T Streets, Jamestown Room, 7PM.
On Saturday 5-9-09 in the Access Sacramento Studio we re-recorded thecommentary for "ATime to Run" Thanks to Erick Lorenz ingenious tele-prompter and Duke McAdow's skillful handling of the equipment and his intelligent directing, plus Sheila Hirsch's attractive appearance and smooth delivery, I believe this version will make ATTR of interest to even more agencies and schools. Duke's sister, Ada, was also a big help. Bosko Ljubisavljevic also lent a helping hand.
Access Sacramento has just purchased a new tele-prompter with its $600 dollar plexiglass attachment. Ron Cooper tells me his tele-prompter utilizes a laptop feature which allows potential users to prepare their work at home and then bring the laptop to the studio and place it in the tele-prompter. This is a far better feature than having to rely on proprietary and expensive software, he said. This latter feature is part of Erick's excellent creation.
Ron Cooper has asked SAMM members for help on May 20, 2009 at which time they will be working with groups who are creating movies for the annual showing at the Crest Theater. It will also give us a chance to recruit actors, if we need them, for "TheMidas Sack of Flour." and future movies. More on that at the May meeting. .
Absolutely. We're aiming for a sat in may (perhaps a sunday for jeff). Willl keep you posted and glad for you input.

Thanks, Jim, forthe heads up. We did shoot some film many years ago, but maybe the city had changed their rules; we'll check. Stockton had no requirements for the shoot at their rural cemetary; but againt hey might have changed their requirements.

I've never contributed to this group before but you brought something up that you might want to know about.
A year or so ago, we were shooting some still photos at the cemetery on Broadway. I have to admit, from an observer's point of view, it was kind of weird, it was of a lady dressed up in a bride's gown.
Somebody approached us and asked what we were doing, we were not doing anything commercial but he told us that to take photos in the cemetery, we had to have a permit from the City of Sacramento. We didn't argue with him, so we just packed up and left. They told us it was a privacy issue in that people's names were on the monuments.
Just a heads up, I didn't see a problem with what we were doing, but the city can have some weird rules.
Although I joined your group a while back, I haven't been following your activities, I'll have to pay more attention to the Yahoo site.

By blue/green screen or ussing the entrance of a local cemetary such as the one on Broadway, or go to the cemetary in Stockton and shoot everything there. I phoned Erick Lorenz and he believes that the blue/green screen method is complicated and the chance of having a good result would be hard to achieve. This means that either going to Stockton Rural Cemetary where Gridley's statue is located or using Sacramento's Broadway Cemetary for the father/son scenes seems the two choices we will have to make. Erick will be available to work on the shoot the first four Saturdays in May. I will contact Russel Tanihana to see if he and Jonathan would be available on one of the May Saturdays.

monthly CFAA meeting on Tuesday April 21st at 7pm, and hear from filmmaker
and TV cameraman Mike Carroll, who will provide tips, ideas, lessons
learned and anecdotes as he shares his one-man filmmaking experiences.
As an independent filmmaker, it is imperative that you understand the many
technical and creative processes and procedures of move making, and there
is no better (or cheaper) way to learn than to take on all those tasks
yourself!
Mike Carroll is a TV news and documentary cameraperson with 24 years
experience, shooting for KCRA Channel 3 Reports since 1989. He partnered
with Bonnie Bennett in 1999 to produce the documentary Dog Soldiers; with
Michael Dryhurst to produce Year, a finalist in the 2006 Sundance Film
Festival; and currently with Bonnie Bennett to produce the feature film
Nightbeats for submission to film festivals and distribution on DVD and
internet download.
The CFAA meetings are held at The Art Institute of Sacramento, located at
2850 Gateway Oaks Dr., Sacramento CA. Admission is free to CFAA members or
$5 for non-members. All are welcome!

The next CFAA monthly script read/feedback forum will
be held at 6:30 on Tuesday April 14th at The Art Institute, 2850 Gateway

4) Fly Fishing
Movie Coming to the Big ScreenBack to Top
Did you ever see the movie “A River Runs Through
It?” Tom Skerritt narrated that movie and he narrates you through
“Rivers
of a LostCoast.”
The upper northern California coastal area is called
“The Lost Coast.” It is, for the most part, terribly rugged
territory.
Fly fishing in the early years, the late 1800s and early 1900s, was
something pretty much unheard of. But, there were early pioneers to the
sport such as the legendary Virgil Sullivan, Grant King and Bill Schaadt.
It’s reported that in a few hours of fishing one day, Sullivan caught
27 steelhead on the RussianRiver that fed his
family and his needy neighbors.
Today, the RussianRiver and most others
don’t support the fishery of yesterday. But, in this chronicled movie,
you can see how many of the rivers were fished by anglers in the infancy of
fly fishing.
Produced by Sacramento filmmakers Justin Coupe and
Palmer Taylor of Skinny Fist Productions, this movie is a must-see for fly
anglers. It will be at the Crest Theater in Sacramento only on April 22-23
with showings at 5:30 and 8 p.m.

The Power
of the Peep Partially
filmed in Sacramento!
Boxed in sets of five and staring out with sugar-blackened eyes,
Marshmallow Peeps have been emerging like clockwork from a factory in BethlehemPennsylvania
since the 1950s. They were born in the mind of a Russian immigrant, hatched
in Easter baskets, and eaten by the dozens across the country. Then they
armed themselves with lances, stood in front of trucks, mutated in
microwave ovens and set out on their own.
This is the story of what happened when a marshmallow met modern America.
It’s the story of how a sweet candy product got to the shelves of
your convenience store – and what happened after it left them behind.
The Power of the Peep takes you to World War I Russia,
across America
and into the Peeps factory itself to tell the extraordinary story of
Marshmallow Peeps.
Part of this doc was filmed here in Sacramento
at the annual Peep Off, which occurs again on April 18, 2009! More
info on Peep Off XII: Of Gods and Men can be found here.

digital filmmaking world and study the blending of filmmaking styles. View,
analyze and discuss in class a variety of digital productions including
independent and foreign films, documentaries, current TV shows and even
your own YouTube videos. You'll also learn about the technology of digital
filmmaking and leave with ideas of how you, yourself, might participate in
the world of digital video.

20) Playwrights
Collaborative Meetings At The Big Idea Theatre Back to Top
All activities are
at the Big Idea Theatre, 1616
Del Paso Blvd (in the same complex as
Fran’s Cafe and the Supper Club, across Del Paso and a little east of
KFC).
Workshops are monthly on Sundays at 7:00 PM on dates to be
announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating.
Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.
At the
Sunday, April 19, workshop, Michael Von
Haenel's "Agent of God" will be read and
discussed. "Following a tragedy which crushes the lives of a
young couple; each of the partners chooses to deal with their grief in
different ways.
While one becomes
an alcoholic, the other (who is a trial lawyer) sublimates her rage by
pursuing a class-action lawsuit that has the potential to
financially ruin the Catholic Church. Through the course of this
drama, they discover a way to repair their shattered lives and renew
their relationship."
At the Sunday,
May 3, workshop, Michelle Cruff's "Clocks
and Elephants" will be read and discussed.
On Saturday,
May 16, Donya Wicken will present a staged
reading of "Magnetic Women."
The June workshop will be on June 7 and a staged
reading will be on June 27.
"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors,
directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote
the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.
Through a
cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in
making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues
where shows might be performed." WORKSHOPS:
At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and
discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.
Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new
original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar
interest by other theatres in the area. There will also be occasional
speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.
STAGED READINGS: Playwrights
participating in the once-a-month Sunday workshops will be
scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that
have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A staged
reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.
Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend
and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational
staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays
to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and
suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.
For further information or if you have a play you would like work shopped,
contact Gary Agid, chairman.
(916-383-9267) .
For those of you who missed the last Interviewing
Techniques workshop, we'll be having another one, which will be held Wednesday, April 15th from
6:30 to 8 p.m. This one will be led by Molly
Dugan, an assistant professor of journalism and communication studies at SacState.
She will be discussing how to tailor your interviews toward articles that
you would be writing for the Sacramento Press.
We'll serve food at 6:30 p.m. and the workshop will start at 6:45 p.m.
Our office is located
at 431 I Street, Suite
107 in the Amtrak station. We are in the same building
complex as the Starbucks. If you are facing Starbucks go around the
building to the left and you'll see our Sac Press sign out front.
We recommend you find parking on the street, bike or take light rail, as
the Amtrak parking lot charges $1.50 per half hour and we cannot cover the
cost of parking. If you take light rail, we will give you two passes when
you get here - one to cover your trip here and one to cover your trip back.
If you have any trouble finding our office, you can give us a call at

May 9th 7:00 p.m. PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" chronicles the
remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end
a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country.
Thousands of women - ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters,
both Christian and Muslim - came together to pray for peace and then staged
a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white
T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to
the country's civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing
about a agreement during the stalled peace talks.
A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence,
Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverence of the
women of Liberia.
Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling
testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.

California Arts Advocates is the sponsor of AB 700, the Creative Industries & Community Economic
Revitalization Act of 2010. The bill's author is Assembly
Member and Assistant Majority Leader Paul Krekorian (D-Los Angeles); co-authors are Assembly
Member Anthony Portantino (D-Pasadena) and Senators Mark DeSaulnier
(D-Contra Costa) and Carol Liu (D-Pasadena). As the sponsor of the
bill, CAA board members are working to build public awareness and support
for this bill, are recruiting more co-authors from the assembly and
Senate, and meeting with elected officials from all levels of
government to gain support among lawmakers at the Capitol.
To become law, AB 700 must pass out of three assembly
committees, the assembly floor, two Senate committees, the
Senate floor, and be signed by the Governor, all within
various legislative deadlines. It has cleared the first hurdle
by passing in the Assembly Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism
and Internet Media Committee (5-3) last week.
AB 700 will be heard by the Assembly Revenue & Taxation Committee on Monday, April 27 at 1:30pm. This committee
is particularly interested in the economic impact of the arts. CAA
Board Member John Gallogly, Executive Director of Theatre West and Michael
McDowell, Senior Director of Cultural Tourism, LA, Inc. (Los Angeles
Convention & Visitor's Bureau) will be at the Capitol to testify
in support of AB 700 before the committee. If you are in Sacramento on April
27, we invite you to attend the hearing and show your support.
More than 25 organizations, including the American Federation of State,
County and Municipal Employees, have registered their support for AB
700. To convince legislators to pass this bill, we need more
organizations to send a message about the public value of the arts.
Please
register your support for a public investiment for the arts by faxing your
letters to Assembly Member Krekorian at (916) 319-2143
or mail to Assembly Member Krekorian, State Capitol, Sacramento, CA95814. Sample letters can be
found on CAA's Web site. Please also fax a copy to CAA at (916)

Notes for 4/03/09
Hello Spring! Hello Wind! Hello Allergies! Sigh…
But this too shall pass. And in the meantime, there is a ton of filmmaking
activity and creative stuff happening in spite of the runny noses and
watery eyes! Most importantly, I am hearing of so many great
connections being made, new partnerships being formed and lots of cross
support going on, and it makes me proud of our film community. I often get
comments from new members and people who have experienced different film
environments - and they love that we actually HAVE a community here that
supports each other and I agree that is what makes Sacramento so uniquely special. Keep
paying it forward…

Paso and a little east of KFC).
Workshops are monthly on Sundays at 7:00 PM on dates

A $5 suggested contribution will help the playwrights offset their
expenses.
On
Saturday, April 4, at 7:30 PM, Roberta Blagg
will present a staged reading of "Missing Pieces."
Synopsis: In 1998 a group of 6 people in their 50's meet in St. LouisMissouri
for a college reunion after 30 years. Because the bonds of early adulthood
are strong, they all return to renew their friendships, tell their stories,
explore the ways time and trouble have taken their toll, and recapture
their dreams.
At the Sunday, April
19, workshop, Michael Von Haenel's "Agent
of God" will be read and discussed.
At the Sunday,
May 3, workshop, Michelle Cruff's "Clocks
and Elephants" will be read and discussed.
on Saturday,
May 16, Donya Wicken will present a staged

The June workshop will be on June 7.
"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers,
actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to
promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere. Through a
cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in
making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues
where shows might be performed."
WORKSHOPS:
At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and discussed as
are ways to promote deserving works for production. Several theaters
have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and
Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres
in the area. There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in
various aspects of theater.
STAGED READINGS:
Playwrights participating in the once-a-month Sunday workshops will
be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays
that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A
staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.
Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend
and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational
staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays
to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and
suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

productions to the accessibility and popularity of YouTube videos. In
fact, many new independent films presented in film festivals are now
created digitally with camcorders for just a few thousand dollars.
Each week, examine films that show the progression and evolution of the
digital filmmaking world and study the blending of filmmaking styles. View,
analyze and discuss in class a variety of digital productions including
independent and foreign films, documentaries, current TV shows and even

The Lost
World (1925)
This innovative and ground-breaking 1925 silent film featured amazing
stop-motion animation from Willis O'Brien, years prior to his work on King
Kong. O'Brien's work in this film stunned audiences in 1925 and was
to forever change special effects and science fiction in film. While
dated in comparison to today's use of CGI, the dinosaurs are still an
impressive sight to see.
The tale opens on reporter Edward Malone (Lloyd Hughes), who wants to marry
Gladys Hungerford (Alma Bennett). Gladys, however, only wants to marry a
man of great deeds. So Malone, having asked his editor for an adventuresome
assignment, is given the task of interviewing Professor Challenger (Beery),
who is planning an expedition to a "lost world." Malone accompanies
Challenger and his men to South America
where, on a great plateau, they find a prehistoric world occupied by
dinosaurs and ape-like men. Much adventure ensues, leading to the
capture of one pissed off Brontosaurus to return to London with - and well, you pretty much
know that dino chaos is bound to ensue if you do something like that!!
Please note that this is from 1925 and does include a character in
blackface.

Broadway. I have to admit, from an observer's point of view, it was
kind of
weird, it was of a lady dressed up in a bride's gown.
Somebody approached us and asked what we were doing, we were not
doing anything commercial but he told us that to take photos in the
cemetery,
we had to have a permit from the City of Sacramento. We didn't
argue with
him, so we just packed up and left. They told us it was a privacy
issue in
that people's names were on the monuments.
Just a heads up, I didn't see a problem with what we were doing, but the
city
can have some weird rules.
Although I joined your group a while back, I haven't been following your
activities, I'll have to pay more attention to the Yahoo site.

attended. Discussed were the issues regarding the shooting of "Ihe
Midas Sac, of Flour. Russell Tanihana and his son Jonathan are
willing to play the roles of father and son in the script.
Also discussed: where to shoot the father and son scenes. By blue/green
screen or ussing the entrance of a local cemetary such as the one on
Broadway, or go to the cemetary in Stockton and shoot everything
there.
I phoned Erick Lorenz and he believes that the blue/green screen method
is complicated and the chance of having a good result would be hard to
achieve. This means that either going to Stockton Rural Cemetary where
Gridley's statue is located or using Sacramento's Broadway Cemetary for
the father/son scenes seems the two choices we will have to make. Erick
will be available to work on the shoot the first four Saturdays in May. I
will contact Russel Tanihana to see if he and Jonathan would be available
on one of the May Saturdays.

The April meeting of SAMM will be held as usual at the Coloma Community Center 46th and T Streets in Sacramento in the Jamestown Room at 7PM. Our first order of business will be to plan for the shooting of the "Midas Sack of Flour" There have been several delays but Herb Bennett and I will take over and try to get the narrative portion of the script completed so that we can forward it to Erick Lorenz for editing.
We are fortunate to have Bernie Scoville's friend, Florence Smith, who if I am up to date, has volunteered her son and grandson to play the father and son parts in the script.
Sue and I made inquiries regardingthe use of Sutter's Fort as a shooting site. Before the meeting I will check with the state people who operatge the fort.
