Fellow SAMM Email Group Members,
It is a myth that SAMM should only be about scripted films in its club
projects.
First, some of our early most notable films were not narrowly scripted
works. I note especially the documentary film that made the American
River Parkway a reality.
Second, some of the most important films of today are documentaries.
For example, "An Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore, which helped him to
win a Nobel Peace Prize.
Third, it is insulting to people to think that they can only be sucked
in by scripts.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to have more than one project on our plates.
It might be a way to increase membership in the club, by letting newcomers
some freedom in creativity for their own projects which other SAMM members
can assist at their discretion.
I wasn't there, obviously, but back in the day when the club had 300 members,
they probably weren't all working on one project.
I see the club in danger of disappearing; we have so few members now.
It is odd that in this time of easily-made high quality video editing with computers,
that the club is waning so. I remember huge 8mm splicing projects for crummy
film output-- what a job that was!
A strategy to increase membership is direly needed. Ideas?
Jeff
PS- Is "direly" a valid word?!
