SAMMers

On Monday and Tuesday of t his week, I did a bit of exploring in the
Gold Country. I was looking for suitable places to shoot some of of
the scenes in "Jack". Near the town of Volcano I found a small cave
known as Masonic Cave. Access to it is free and unsupervised. This
entrance is actually in someone's back yard.

Another entrance is just around the corner.

This cave is not very deep. We can shoot near one or the other of
these entrances and make out that this is the gateway to hell. Jack
would be seen lying in a heap in front of the opening. The demon
would walk up out of the cave or simply materialize (F/X) there. I
plan to write or call the residents for permission to film. I will
even offer to pay to plug in to their power if we need flood lamps or
F/X lighting.

In the town of Volcano itself there are several vintage buildings
that might pass for the old tavern. Here is one of them.

With proper camera angles we can block out any modern sights. Again
I would need to call ahead for permission.

Near Volcano, I went to Black Chasm Caverns. This is a very nice
cave but the company running it has put in a series of stairs and
walkways so there is no place where you can stand on the ground. The
people there liked the idea of us shooting a film but I couldn't see
it would work.

I also went to California Caverns. While waiting for the tour I
talked to the guy selling tickets. He said that other groups had
shot movies in the caves. Then he called the manager and relayed the
news that said manager was no longer allowing film crews in because a
student group had cut electrical wires inside the cave to improve
their view.

I also explored the Sutter Mine near Sutter Creek. Parts of the
interior would probably work really well but it would would require
climbing some major stairs to get to them.

I also saw this gate at the Auburn Quarry. Jeff also sent me
pictures of this place. The gate is securely locked so we wouldn't
be able to film inside or have the demon come out through the gate.
Anyway the inside is all wet and muddy. The other problem with this
site is that you normally have to walk over a mile to get to it. The
trail is wide enough for a car as it was once a rail line. Perhaps
we could get a key and permission to drive there from the state parks
people.

I am going to travel to Woodside early next week to look at the water
temple and get some pictures.

As for cast, I went to the Access Sacramento casting call but I
didn't see anyone that really caught my eye. They were however
taking video head shots of all the actors so maybe I can check them out

I also sent a casting call announcement to Laurie Pederson who sends
out the CFAA newsletter. Hopefully in a few days it will go out to
all the members on that list and we might get some hits.

Erick
