The imaginary child is something that George and Martha use as a way to
connect?having failed?to conceive children of their own - however, the imaginary
child also becomes a tool for hurting each other -?i.e. George doesn't say that
he doesn't like it when Martha seduces other men -?but says that their son left
their home because Martha chased him with her "kimono flying and her liquor
breath on him" which implies that Martha even tried to seduce her own son.
So, the imaginary child is used to?connect, comfort and when they are?drunk and
dysfunctional [haha - they're always dysfunctional] torture and hurt each other.
Ps - George and Martha are also the names of our 1st, 1st family [ Washington]

Subject: [RichardBurton] Q about "Who's Afraid ..."
Hi everybody!
Just a question about "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Why does
Martha invent the story about their child and why does George get so
angry about it? I have read the play at school and watched the film
and still don't understand it.
Thanks in advance!
