Heidi I have seen The Spy Who Came In From The Cold only once and I was not
blown over by his performance. I need to revisit this movie because everybody
raves about his performance in this.
What strikes me as even more strange about Richard's loss to Paul in 1966 is
that Richards performance in Ann of a Thousand Days is so much better than
Paul's in A Man for All Seasons. Ann and A Man shared the same storyline. I
just read a reviewer on Amazon who said Paul Scofield "hardly makes a gesture
throughout the entire film". I totally agree with this observation. I describe
Paul's performance as monotone. In contrast to this Richard's performances in
both Virginia Woolf and Ann were very lively. Richard was memorable in both
these films. How does one remember a performance which it is described as
"monotone". I'm sorry I have to remember a performance for it to deserve an
Oscar. Let's see Marlon Brando in The Godfather, Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man,
Richard Burton in Virginia Woolf oops that last one didn't happen.

I certainly concur, Roseann. Although as time goes by, I come to
respect his performance in "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" more and more. I
have seen Scofield's performance, but it's been a while. That might be a fun
thing to do...go back and view both films, then do a sort of
comparison/contrast.

We all know that Richard was robbed when he didn't win the Oscar for
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Paul Scofield won for A Man For All
Seasons. Our thoughts were confirmed in 1970 when columnist Joyce
Haber polled the film industry for their personal picks for the
outstanding achievement of the 60's. For the decades Best Performance
by an actor, Richard Burton's George easily outpointed Paul Scofields
Sir Thomas More and every other male Oscar winner from Burt Lancaster
to John Wayne.
I have seen both of these movies and I couldn't agree more with this
statement. Has anybody seen these movies and want to let us know the
difference between the two performances? Please share your thoughts.
