Hi all, I am new to the group. I have been reading much lately on
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. I hope you all do not mind if
I share my thoughts now and then on something I find interesting
when I read it. I have become fascinated with these two as a couple
and as individuals.
I have just finished watching Richard Burton's Hamlet on DVD which I
thank Sally Hay Burton for giving me the chance to do so. I am not
a fan of Sally's but she was quite generous in finding this in
Richard's belongings and releasing it as Richard wanted it
destroyed. I also would like to thank her for releasing his
diaries. In doing so she showed she was not selfish and wanted to
share Richard with everyone. I do belong to the
Dameelizabethtaylor.com site and have told them over there that when
you read Richard's diaries you come away knowing and liking the man
more.
Getting back to Hamlet Richard's greatest triumph. Richard
describes his performance as Richard Burton doing Hamlet as Richard
Burton or something to that effect. I list some of the reviews that
he received during the Hamlet run:
Richard Burton is one of the most magnificently equpped actors
living...He places on open display not only all of his own
revertbereting resources...but also all of the myriad qualities
which the man Hamlet rquires.
Mr. Burton delivers the Shakepearean verses effectively and without
any unnecessary flourishes.
Burton offers an unprecedented Hamlet. He plays Hamlet to the full.
Richard Burton plays Hamlet as Hamlet would like to have been.
And my favorite of all is the one said by Elizabeth Taylor:
"You are the Frank Sinatra of Broadway".
Thanks
Roseann
