Subject: [RichardBurton] Celigny grave pics

First of all, many thanks for the interest & kind comments after I put
my pics up .I went to celigny on his 80th simply because I'd promised
myself I would. To explain a little about that, I actually hitch-hiked
over to switzerland in 81 & was fortunate to meet the man himself.God
knows what he thought seeing this scruffy 20 year old lad asking him
for his autograph whilst he was sat with people having dinner at the
cafe du la gare.He looked me over, asked me where I'd come from & I
told him the truth, manchester, england. He then asked me if I were
insane,to which I replied "quite possibly".Then when he saw I was
intending to leave after he signed for me,he asked me if I'd eaten.I
hadn't & what happened after that you simply couldn't have made it
up.Not only did he make sure I had a meal .He chatted to me as if he'd
known me for years & when I said that i'd intruded far too much &
should leave,Insisted that I spend the night at a room upstairs at the
cafe.I dont remember an awful lot of the evening afterwards as the
rather nice & expensive claret took care of that. The next morning
,Rich had left a note with some 300 swiss francs, explaining that If I
went to the British airways desk at geneva there was a first class
ticket with my name on it . Also Roger, the owner of the cafe told me
there was a car waiting whenever I was ready.
I have never known such warmth & generousity to a stranger in my life
& so felt I owed it him to visit again when I could.
